When we recently undertook to reform the ratings and event support systems, many Residents brought up questions about one thing we left out: old ratings. Many longtime Residents are carrying ratings (positive and negative) given by Residents who are no longer a part of the Community in a time when Second Life had different rules and a different economy. These older ratings no longer accurately reflect the realities of Second Life.

Starting February 16, and continuing thereafter, positive and negative ratings older than six months will decay and disappear from ratings totals. This change will have the benefit of making more recent ratings more meaningful and representative, while also making those ugly negatives a little less permanent.

I do believe a reason for this is because this is a more gradual, subtle way of "bridging" between the old rating fee and the current one. As opposed to a sudden "WIPEOUT!", this "ratings erosion" will allow more time for acclimation. Six months down the line, we'll see how things are. =^_^=

Wow, very cool. Finally, I'll be able to compete with those old-timers who have been around getting ratings forever.

On the other hand, I've gotten like 1 rating since the L$25 fee took effect. Sigh.

wise move.

i think this is quite the advantageous imlpementation. it will serve to even out the ratings playing field, as well as (like Robin said) make negs a bit liess irritable.

thanks LL for a move in the right direction.. hopefully this is just a band-aid to facilitate further evolution of the ratings to something more along the lines of meaningful commentary.

Will it also result in being able to re-rate folks when they do something new to impress (or infuriate) us? Do we re-gain the ability to rate people as our old ratings of them drop away?

I'll be glad to see the fewer-than-5 negative ratings that I've given drop away. I don't remember who specifically I gave them out to, but I think that they were probably to people who aren't in SL anymore, and were probably removed from the community do to their habits. Just the same, it'll be nice to see them wiped clean. :)

I have more or less been expecting something like this to happen eventually, which is one of the reasons I have never cared too much about ratings. One of the other reasons is because they never worked the way they were intended. Not to toot my own horn, but I have spent nearly 2 years with SL's building toolset, have been told that I am an above average builder, and I would be lying if I said it doesn't make me furrow my brow a bit when I see someone fairly new with a higher build rating.

The increase in cost coupled with the decay of ratings are likely steps in the right direction.

*cough* newer ratings more meaningful? LOL Sorry but I think most of the people that are newer with a ton of ratings didn't come by them because each one meant something. I guess it's great for those with a ton of negs but I earned most of my older ratings so it kinda sucks a little that they have to go. Oh well change is change :).

Robin said... "Starting February 16, and continuing thereafter, positive and negative ratings older than six months will decay and disappear from ratings totals."

Does that mean ratings will always reflect the current six month period? Is that how it will work? Or is it just the initial decay drop of the oldest ratings? If ongoing six month period, that means those that want the highest ratings have to actively lobby and game for them? If I rated someone seven months ago and that rating has dropped, can I rate them again? Is there a discount price for the second rating? Clue me in, just trying to make sure Im clear.

that sucks, my neg ratings are all from griefers, excluding a triple neg given by some deranged stalker... and sadly I dont think they are older than 6 months... matter of fact, the derranged stalker triple neg rated me "before they costed too much"

The language seems to indicate that ratings will only reflect the previous 6 month period.

If 6 month old rating were just being removed this once, I wouldn't see that as a decay. It would be a one time wipe/removal. The way I interpret this statement, because of the words I've made bold, I'd think ratings will decay once they reach 6 months old, from here on out.

Does this mean that the 17 negs I handed out to parcel banners will go away? The day land-banning was introduced, I got into a snit, handed out build negs with "speed bumps are bad for the world, please remove the ban and I'll un-neg". Alas, three of twenty did respond and I forgot who the others were :o (embarrased emoticon that doesn't look as embarrassed as I feel)

So to re-invent a 'Sports term' -- Darko, you could be the 'neggiest' person in SL!

Wooot!

So now I will have to keep up with who I think deserves a good rating and be sure I go back and rerate them every six months?

Bravo LL for implementing another player-suggested and player-supported idea. (Not that you didn't also think of and like the idea as well.)

Now stupid griefer rates from a long time ago will be GONE, and people who have spent their time getting rate-spammed will no longer get that exploit.

@ Kent: How does your letter have anything to do with this? You wrote that today and we've been discussing this very issue and solution for over a year!

Dont deflate his ego, Hiro.
As for griefer ratings:
a) Most griefers leave SL really fast, or get kicked out. Their ratings have always gone with them.
b) Since this new thing only applies to ratings that are over 6 months old, and that belong to dead accounts, the active accounts from people's 10-dollar alts will still be able to rate-rape you.
