What do SL'ers think of CoH? I'm thinking about playing it, and wanted to get opinions. Thanks.

There's no PvP, and there's little to do except fight computer controlled goons.

No in game economy, nothing to craft, just tons and tons of players thumping on the same 50 enemies forever.

They're supposed to announce "city of villains", which lets players run their own villaneous super group... then it might get interesting :)

I for one happen to love it. The thing I hated about all the other mmorpg's is the grouping for hours to get anywhere. COH is solo friendly and the missions are short and rewarding. The combat is usually much larger scale than most games. It's mostly mindless combat and chatting but all the power effects are well done and making characters is a blast.

It's less like playing EQ and more like playing PSO (Phantasy Star Online). No real "/stick, F8, go afk" gameplay. It's really laid back, like a mmo arcade game rather than an rpg as far as the gameplay elements though.

LordFly, the lack of all that stuff you mention is pretty refreshing. ;)

COH is good for all those players who want to play an MMORPG without worrying about having to play all the time just to keep up, who don't want to worry about people killing their characters just because they are higher level, or people who like comic books. They also are supposed to have city wide events, such as mobs of enemies popping up all over the city, a supervillian and his grunts taking over buildings and such. People can roleplay if they so choose too, and there are lots of different possibilities as far as creating your superhero goes.

I haven't tried it myself, but I have several friends in real-life who have been beta testers for the past 2-3 weeks. So far, the feedback has been positive. I'm not planning on giving it a try myself until villains are implemented, though.

I haven't played this but my brother is alot. Seems pretty silly...I can't get past the sillyness factor of it. But it's nice if there isn't a level treadmill and other crap like that. The problem is keeping people playing.

If they can keep people entertained for longer than a month or two, it'll be okay. But they'd better be more creative than "spawn lots of bad guys to fight".

After going through countless betas and wasting money on Horizons, SWG, DAOC, et al, COH is the first game since SL to really capture my attention. The rest bored me very quickly because ultimately I am not into RPGs.

Cienna is right - the stripped down, pure gameplay is refreshing. It is more like a single player game played with other people than a pure MMOG - but there is an appeal in that. Overall, I find the game a nice companion to SL. It doesn't have the depth of a full on RPG, but it is instantly playable and appealing.

Speaking of it all, you can find me on the Justice server, name's (suprise) Cienna. I think I vaguely heard that server mentioned in the other thread on this topic.

Ditto, plus what Cienna and others have said, plus... don't I look just so freakin' cool?

Yay, you got the pic of me in there, Darque! :* I'm definitely subscribing to CoH... hafta wait a little while though. I'm currently a little short on funds. But hopefully, my new job will take care of that problem. :)

I find CoH to be refreshing. It's different from other MMORPGs I've played. Every MMORPG has some sort of level grind... you'll never escape that. I'm a casual player, not a powerleveler... so I'm not looking for a lifetime investment here, just a fun game. If I get even three months of fun out of CoH, that's fine with me. That's about how long I lasted with Anarchy Online. ;)

It is a very refreshing change from the other MMORPGs out there. Its very easy to learn, pretty much bug free (to me at least), the tutorial is short and the best thing about it is the character customization. I was hooked, after being in it for about 2 hrs. Most other betas I've been in either took awhile for me to like or I never did.

I'm Captain Blaze on the Virtue server.

server question
04-27-2004 13:13
is there a server that SLers have chosen as 'home'? i was just wondering if SLers are tending to exist in the same world there? and if there are any SuperGroups made up of SLers, or plans for one?

i've been interested in this game for a long time, i think at least a year. never tried to get into Beta. seriously considering joining for when i want to just 'play a game' and let my mind rest. i love SL, but it's like playing Chess all the time.. sometimes you just want to go play CandyLand..

not that I'm aware of.

the proposed server names are:
Justice
Pinnacle
Virtue
Liberty
Guardian
Infinity
Protector
Victory
Champion

it starts tomorrow BTW
and all characters from the beta got wiped but we got to reserve our names, I'm fine for any of these servers to be an SL server, lets see what others say

I've been playing on Justice so far, up to 11 now so I can mentor a sidekick if someone's starting out. Also I'm an alt-aholic so always have various level ranges. :) Right now I have Cienna and Freyalise on Justice.
