What's even worse is the creators refer to it as THE GIMP. The Gnu Image Manipulation Program. Jeez, why not just call if Super Helpful Image Tool?

Worst acronym I ever heard was during college... at U Penn...

PARMESAN

Penn's Alternative Recreational Music Entertainment Society And Network

How bad is that? hehehehe. The guy who ran it was nice though.

HaHa now that IS cheesy :D

Oh, that reminds me of the school chaplin's daughter from the convent school I attended in England. Her name was Sarah Helen Isabel Thomas. and she had the personality to fit the name (last I heard of her, she was in juvie for hitting someone on the head with a roller skate...)

Sorry, let's get back to economic woes now :)

On the ratings clearing idea:

We are listening - this does seem appealing. A few comments:

+ We don't need to do it tommorow. We have a chronological database of ratings, so we can decide to delete all the old (L$1) ratings at some point in the future. So this gives is time to think.

+ Another issue is do we want to wait until there are no more incentives (ratings bonuses), so that there is no money-related incentive to rate, however small. Again, we have this option to wait because of the database.

Thoughts welcome

I say do it now Philip to establish a level field! I am amazed at the growth I've seen in the last month or so and think now would be the time to do it for sure !

Don't wait....clear the rating now have a clean start. If you wait to do it you'll just get more of the same for no reason.

Philip,

Go ahead and do it... you know its good... ratings have become somthing very far away form what they were supposed to be since the begining... with this.. people will start to think about its true meaning.

Aside from the fact that I -hate this-, let me give an example as to why the rich will stay rich and the poor will stay poor in this case (yet again.)

I have 1000 positive Behavior ratings. I earned them over a year and a half's time. It cost the world 1000L for those ratings to be put in place.

Do you think the world is ready to fork out 25,000L to the next new player so s/he can catch up with us older players and earn more than 3L for their bonus stipend?

Daem, you missed the point. Bonuses go to 50% tomorrow and WILL BE GRADUALLY PHASED OUT ALTOGETHER. So ratings will have no financial incentives... kind of like when they got rid of the calling card incentive.

Take a poll on zeroing ratings.

I say ratings should cost more, but not be zeroed... can you imagine loosing 2000 positive ratings?...

If the old ratings are deleted, I trust I'll be reimbursed the L$ I spent rating others.

Flip--okay, so, I agree, I did miss the point. But for those who have Givens of higher than 1000, is that going to be refunded perchance, since ratings are going to be eliminated? If so, what about the people who actually fork out the 25L for ratings--will they be refunded, or should rating be warned against altogether?

To me, a switch from $1 per rating to $25 per rating constitutes a new system. Points from the $1 system were 25x cheaper.

Personally, I've been part of the problem... I try to rate everyone I meet +3 4U!

Why?

Well, I know I've met about 1000 avatars in SL based on 3000whatever divided by 3.

But I'm ALL for a system that means something. $25/rating is one way to make it mean something. Hitting people in their pocketbooks works every time.

Personally I'd like to see a system along the lines of the one used in ClanLord (and a shout out to anyone that remembers Ghoti from CL ;) )

Their online manual describes the system thus:

From: someone
Karma

Karma is a numerical measure of the good and ill will you've accumulated from other players in the world of Clan Lord.

Other players give it to you. If you're nice to them, they'll probably give you good karma, and if you're rude, you'll probably receive bad karma.

Karma has almost no effect on the mechanics of the game. However, the reactions of others may be based largely on your karma. Some clans, areas, and merchants might be limited to people with good net karma. It might also affect what happens to you when you are killed and depart your body.

As your character's deeds are noticed by others, you'll receive Karma. In addition, Karma decays naturally over time, as your deeds are forgotten.

Reasons to give good karma

It's a good idea to give good karma whenever you want to say, "Thanks!" For example, if someone:

answers your question
rescues you
rescues your friend
makes you laugh
role-plays especially well
instructs a newbie
is charitable
makes you happy
give them good karma.

Reasons to give bad karma

It's a good idea to give bad karma whenever you'd like to say, "Hey! Don't do that!" For example, if someone:

asks you the same question repeatedly
gives away secrets
yells repeatedly
harasses someone
gets you killed
is rude
uses foul language
won't leave you alone
refuses to answer a question
makes you swear
makes you grumpy
annoys you
go ahead and give them bad karma.

You can't find out who gave you Karma. Karma is anonymous. Sometimes you can guess, but it's often a better idea to turn the other cheek than to make a big deal about it.

Why does my karma go down sometimes?

Karma decays gradually over time, as people forget tales of your previous deeds. The more you have, the faster it drops. Eventually, your Karma will mostly settle on a level that gives some idea of what other people think of you.

If karma doesn't affect anything, why should I care?

Some people might only help others with good karma. Some clans or guilds might require good karma to join. Or maybe you just want to feel good about yourself.

I think its the best reputation system I've seen in a MMO.

Philip, one more suggestion...

During tomorrow's down time, remove and refund any rates that have occured within the past 36 hours. People are demonstrating why there must be a change to the system by rate mining/whoring worse than I've ever seen in my time here!

Reverse/refund 'em ALL!

I'm in the top 10 Behavior ratings, and the top 20 Appearance and Building, and I fully support zeroing out the ratings after the upgrade. It makes no sense for $25 ratings to be added on to $1 ratings - especially for newcomers.

I've have my cheap ratings fun - time to move on and see how expensive ratings pan out!

However, it will be interesting to see who ends up maxing out the reduced rating bonus next week, if everything is zeroed. I sense some closet private rating parties soon....

Will we get our money back based on how many L$1 rates we have given?

And why do you ask for thoughts now, as you clearly didn't care about what people thought about the current changes?
