It's a sobering thought, "Do i believe, or am i just going through the Motions?"
But then, I had no choice, did i?

One aspect of belief that I've always found fascinating is the huge percentage of believers whose faith remains whatever they were raised with. Many people end up with a different set of beliefs than their parents and community, but more often than not people stick with what they were taught during their most formative years. To me that suggests that belief has more to do with conforming to parental, peer, and community expectations than it does with epiphany.

I'm not sure I'd say that. I'd say it's more likely that 'belief' is something a matter of convienience to a lot of people - its easier to believe what you've always believed than struggle through your thoughts and feelings.

Note that I don't except athiesm as being immune to that. I know athiests who were raised athiest who never sat down and rationaly thought about their choice. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying if they do, they would become Christiain. I have no problem with people being athiest, nor do I think belief in God is the eventual rational outcome of thought. I just feel that everyone should think about their own beliefs (or lack thereof)... it shouldn't just be a matter of lack of beliefs through apathy.

I was born to Christian parents, but beyond being baptised, I was raised agnostic: My parents never mentioned God or faith really unless it was a conversation I initiated. I was agnostic (I wasn't athiest per say... It wasn't that I didn't believe in God, I just didn't know what I believed) throughout most of my highschool life. That was when I started to look very heavily into religions and faiths. I didn't go to Christianity like a moth to flame either, I was actually a wiccan for a while. I still feel that wicca has a lot of good points about it, in terms of a way to live your life, but I eventually felt that it wasn't the right path for me. Thus, nothing in my faith is the result of blind conditioning - I am what I am because I chose to be.

Do I think this is the only right way to raise a person? I'm not a parent and never will be, so far be it for me to be that pretentious. Do I think its a good way to raise a person? Yes.

Maybe the blind conditioning was in your need to find a god/goddess.

Doesn't seem like there was much choice if you were on the highway in search of heaven from the moment you left the garage.

Hardly.

Like I say, my parents essentialy never discussed the topic with me one way or another.

I was not "on the highway in search of heaven from the moment I left the garage" - it actually started out a lot more subtly than you would ever believe. I was not, in fact, looking for God when I started studying religion, quite the opposite.

So you didn't start studying religion because you were looking for god.

But the opposite.

....

I describe myself as a Devout Catholic, My Adherance is that strong, But still, there is confusion. In the end, My Parents and the Church establishment did me no Favors.

It's a sobering thought, "Do i believe, or am i just going through the Motions?"
But then, I had no choice, did i?

Angel.

I was raised Catholic, was an Altar/choir boy. Yet I had a choice, I found the faith of my choosing after seeking, and it wasn't Catholicism. We all have choices.

I think there are many people who take our Christian beliefs as an attack. For instance, my belief is I have a forgiven god, as long as you accept Jesus as the savior, and confess with your mouth that you believe he died to save us from sin, you will go to heavan. If you never do that, you will stand before god and be judged. I am not to say whether god will condem you to hell or not.

Now some people take that as an attack, BUT WHY IF YOUR ATHIEST?? If you are a true athiest, you would only get offended if you believed in heavan and hell. If in your mind there is no hell, why would you get insulted if I said you would be going there.

I am a Jr. Pastor at my church. I was raised as roman catholic, they do not have as forgiven of a god. I studied Muslim, Jewish, I've recently done reading on american indian religions, Budah and I know many Wiccans.

Christianity just rings true to my heart. SOme say it is a far fetched fiction book. I say I hear truth in the words. I can feel the spirit of god within me. Anyone can if they accept it is there in their heart.

I would invite anyone in the Connecticut area to my church of faith. I have seen total unbelievers walk out in tears and change their lives after just one visit. We are not about judging each other. The holy spirit fills our building, something magical happens. I cant get enough of church. When I miss a service, I feel empty.

I can tell you stories of miracle. can tell you stories of peole who bettered themselve financial by trusting god., I can tell you stories of drug addict who came to the lord to beat the demons and after years of faiure, they finally beat the monkey. I can tell you stories of the sick getting better. I can tell you stories of teenagers who went from the wrong path to grow up and become outstanding citizens. I can tell you stories of the terminally ill, suffering for long periods of time, only to finally accept Jesus Christ and finally be released to heavan. I can tell you stories of shattered marrages reuniting by living like godly men and woman.

Divorce rate today is 60%. You show me a couple that is living like godly men and woman, walking hand in hand with the lord. I'll show you a couple in true bliss. I've never seen a couple that did not live according to the word that was unhappy. WHy is it?

Teen age pregnancy rate, through the roof. Yet, the rate of pre-marital pregnancy in the christian church is 70% lower!! Why is this? Ok so your saying SO WHAT THEY ARE AFFRAID TO HAVE SEX. Lets examine further, more than 75% of teenagers having babies end up being single parents. The rate pof single parents who end up living in poverty is very high. ANother scary fact, 70% (THATS SEVENTY PERCENT!!) of our prison sytem is filled with people who grew up with a single mom!!!! I am not saying if you grow up with a single parent you are going to jail, I am saying the chances of going on the wrong path is higher. I do understand there are some remarkable moms out there who do an amazing job raising their children to be outstanding people. I give them a round of applause, its a hard thing to do by yourself. I am will to bet that those who do succeed rely on some form of faith though, no matter what religion.

I spend a lot of time couceling in rehabs and substance abuse centers, although I cant talk about my relgion in many of these places. I can state as a fact that roughly 80% of those in there have no faith. They believe god is dead and all religions are fairytales.

I can go on and on with facts about how sin is tied to many of the worlds problems today.

And just to make clear my belief. It is not my god condeming these people. All these problems are an after effect of sin. It is the devil who cast the uglyness on them. My god just wants to love and forgive them, and have a close relationship with every one of his children.

If any of this has insulted you, then in your heart you are not athiest. In your heart you know there is som,e kind of higher power and there might, just maybe be some truth to going to hell.

Maybe you should find some other hobbies. I went to catholic school from kindergarten to 12th grade. When I had to go to church it made me feel dirty. And communion made me ill if I didnt spit it out as I rounded the pillars.

I had a friend who had a drug habbit and after years of smoking rock they suddenly quit, and blamed a new job with a drug test.

It's called having faith in yourself. Just because people make it thru hard times doesn't mean that they had to glom onto some aspect of your mythological god.

Because you embrace a system of belief and worship a god who would see the majority of the human population that ever lived tortured for eternity. Even if that god appeared on my doorstep this afternoon and convinced me beyond any doubt that he was the real deal, I still would not worship or bow to such a tyrranical beast.

Under the warped logic of Christian theology, Ghandi is burning in hell while Hitler sips martinis by the pool in Heaven.
