From: Siro Mfume Your analogy is stupid. It conveys a lack of insight or research for the expediency of producing the analogy. Not only does Mercedes sell individual parts (as do all major car manufacturers), they also have a vast, vast variety of custom parts, options and such. You can even acquire the frame to a c-class if you want. Heck your mechanic could hook you up with that pretty easily. Here's a few examples of the G class. (just because they look cool.) http://www.rubicon-trail.com/G-Class/wheels/armored.htmlYou could also very probably buy wholesale parts from DaimlerChrysler (the owners of the Mercedes brand) and create your own brand based on their platforms. It certainly wouldn't be the first time automakers have done that. (Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift/Chevy Sprint/Pontiac Firefly/Suzuki Cutlus is a good example). You are right, AMG is a Tuner in Germany who specifically goes to Mercedes and buys partly built cars, everything installed except motor, tires, suspension and all parts related to that, and they install their stuff like V8 6L motor and tune it to death. So... Analogy was not that good, but let's say, AMG buys stuff to make it expensiver and not cheaper. G.

G. your whole point is wrong, AMG is a division of Mercedes. They got bought out in 2000 I think it was.

K folks, I had to dig this thread up after I found this.... just came across a review of the new Mac G5's. Not a bad machine. Played with one at CompUSA too- nice but a lil' on the high priced side ($2499 w/o monitor. Add another $2k for the monitor). LOVED the monitor tho!!! So, in the review I found HERE, they ran some basic benchmarks that can be used on the PC or on a Mac (using Bootcamp). Not bad scores either. Nothing the Cheer about either. I also ran the same benchmarking software, 3D Mark 06, on this machine: AMD 64 3000 (single core@ 1.8 Ghz), 2 GIG DDR400, GeForce 6800 (agp version). My score: 1519 Mac G5 Dual Core/Dual Xeon: 1645 WOW!! A whole 126 pts ahead!!! So if I more or less stuck in a Dual Core Athlon 64 I'll pretty much beat that score. Still, nice machine tho.

Don't you think you're stretching things a little? Decades? You're just trying to be silly. It --COULD-- be the pinnacle of hardware for, at most, two years, but probably less, more like a year and 1/4. In the computer world, hardware advances quite quickly. Don't get me wrong, their new hardware currently is cutting edge. Since they came out with OSX, their software has been cutting edge and I hope they continue to keep it that way. The only thing I wish they'd add to their OS, and it's a trivial thing, is the ability to customize the colors.

Ugh, they do know they are somethin like 8% of the market right? this is almost as bad as those "hi im a mac and I'm a PC" comericals. they point out things like the bundled software on macs and how windows doesnt have them, well if the tides were turned and Mac's were the doninant computer in the world they wouldnt come with all those bells and whistles anyways because someone would be sueing them for anti-trust violations too. i'll stick to my PC laptop, sure its big, and crashes every once in a blue moon, but at least its not girly

Hint: It's not because they led the market, nor because they are a large corporation. Hint: When you post things like this, it's equivalent to declaring to the world "I'm an opinionated ignoramus!" ... Girly? Because being feminine is being inferior, right? That's why you have a damaged chromosome, right? You're not worthy.

You're not worthy. United States v. Microsoft 87 F. Supp. 2d 30 (D.D.C. 2000) was a court case filed against Microsoft Corporation on May 18, 1998 by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and twenty U.S. states. Joel I. Klein was the lead prosecutor. The plaintiffs alleged that Microsoft abused monopoly power in its handling of operating system sales and web browser sales. The issue central to the case was whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle its flagship Internet Explorer (IE) web browser software with its Microsoft Windows operating system. Bundling them together is alleged to have been responsible for Microsoft's victory in the browser wars as every Windows user had a copy of Internet Explorer. similar anti-trust with the bundled MS WORD. MS is the biggest target, makes the most money, your telling me that the US will come after me with an anti-trust if i sell 12 copies of something i wrote, and those 12 copies came with free software that made my 12 friends buy more of my stuff instead of my competators? nope. bigger fish. sure you guys are finally using some PC hardware but there is a whole wealth of better hardware out there, for less money. not to mention that i see no Apple computers with SLI... these guys say it best http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1015011590413902297&q=mac+vs.+pc&hl=enl8r 8%

The issue was not whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle Internet Explorer with their operating system. They have the right to bundle Internet Explorer with their operating system. They /still do/, as a matter of fact. The issue was whether they were allowed to force OEMs (that's original equipment manufacturers) to pay /more/ in volume licensing fees if the OEM's chose to leave Internet Explorer out of the OEM version of Windows95 / Windows98 and bundle a competing product instead. In short, the issue was that Microsoft made volume licensing deals entirely dependent on the inclusion of an /inferior/ product (at a net loss to Microsoft) that they explicitly sought to dominate market share in, producing an unfair business environment for other browser vendors. In the industry, it's called 'going over the Chinese Wall'. It is for this specific reason that Apple has never been sued/prosecuted for bundling iTunes - they're not forcing OEMs to ignore competing products in exchange for favorable license deals. If the situation was the same as what /you/ conceive it to be, apple would be sued/prosecuted, because while you think "only eight percent" is "tiny", that is eight percent of a very large worldwide market, and is definitely worth pursuing. Thank You, Have A Nice Day.

Thank You, Have A Nice Day. two things, 1.) they are not allowed to bundle IE with versions of the OS in Europe, 2.) how is that any differnt than creating a platform with a limited market, that makes creating 3rd party software production not very profitable. oh and on a side note, you still didnt address the hardware portions of my reply. no Thank You, and have a Super Awesome Day.

Oh, I /am/ so sorry. 1: The european courts imposed the restriction against bundling IE on Microsoft /because/ of the situation I described, which you were apparently ignorant of. 2: It is not the duty of the vendor of a computer operating systems platform to make their OS platform unlimited in scope and massively successful (unless they go public). It is merely their duty to keep the OPERATIONS OF THEIR COMPUTER OS DIVISION SEPARATE FROM THEIR APPLICATIONS DIVISION AS IS REQUIRED BY ANTITRUST LEGISLATION AND IN KEEPING WITH THE CORPORATE STRUCTURE THEY FILED WITH THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION. 3: My Mac has a POSIX-compliant environment, standard. Of the tens of thousands of Microsoft boxes that I have at times administered, precisely three had a POSIX environment installed on them and they were academic machines. Until Windows2000 happened, I couldn't even expect /security/ from those machines. 4: Until the past two years, Windows machines were not even /ready/, hardware wise, for the production of audio, video, and multimedia. Walk into any graphics, audio, video shop anywhere in the world at any point in time for the past decade and you will find either Macintoshes, or Amigas, or a custom workstation/server solution. Windows? That's what the books are kept on. (Accounting.) zomg cite Photoshop at me, please, and watch me laugh at the fact that I've seen Photoshop run better on a Bondi Blue iMac than on a 1.2 GHz tricked-out WindowsXP machine that had been tuned. 5: SLI is a vendor-proprietary protocol specification. Whereas the Macintosh has, for over a decade, supported multiple video displays and video output formats and does not need to have specially-designed hardware/communications protocols to have up to four display cards installed, for eight displays total. Whereas most OEM PC's are still hobbled by the fact that every video card still needs its' own IRQ. You seem to have confused me with someone who has not done more than customer support w/ regards to computers. Call me when you have, personally, used Ohm's Law and Moore's Law from memory in your day-to-day job.

lets start here first off do you mean an Intel chip or an AMD chip with the 1.2 ghz? which version of the procs are you refering to, etc. as any mac enthusist should know frequency isnt everything, same applies to PC specs before joint program with intel and Mac. as far as the GPU's and Audio devices go, most of the time they were interchangable, ie, soundblaster card would work in both Mac and PC. its been like that for more than a few years. really the only thing thats been differnt on a mac was the arch. of the proc and i believe a differnt bus structure. they still used the same Ram, audio hardware, video hardware avalible. Windows has also had multiple displays, and you seem to be confused on the whole idea of SLI, SLI isnt about multiple displays, its about sharing the burdon of a single display among 2 GPU's. which can give you up to a 2x boost in preformance in frame rate. I'm just pointing out that Macs havent came out with a machine that uses this tech. now im sure its entirely possible to put the SLI cards into a mac, if the destination mac has the dual PCI express slots to support it. after all many macs are running Nvidia/ATI GPUs that arnt too far behind current releases. SLI is still a vendor-proprietary protocol. Apple is not in the business of making graphics displays, nor is it in the business of forwarding vendor-proprietary protocols (which is where this beat-down began, way to circle around) BUT, HEY - From http://www.apple.com/macpro/graphics.html -- "Like even more screen real estate? Thanks to the new double-wide PCI Express graphics slot, no matter which card you have installed as your primary graphics card, your Mac Pro still provides room for three additional PCI Express expansion cards. In all, Mac Pro lets you install up to four PCI Express graphics cards. Providing support for up to eight displays simultaneously, Mac Pro offers an ideal solution for advanced visualization projects and large display walls. You don’t need a clear day to see forever. You just need a new Mac Pro." I guess your Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering exempts you from knowing whereof you speak. Oh, you have a Masters in Electrical Engineering. Congratulations. And what do you do with your Master's - besides hold strong opinions on Computer Science/MIS? I don't have a Master's in Electrical Engineering. I suppose that would make me less than qualified to offer an opinion about the physical design limitations that one experiences at 45-nanometer mask resolutions, especially with regards to the problems that the industry's EDA tools have in incorporating physics-based design knowledge and expertise due to the widespread adoption of the fabless model of silicon logic design and the lack of communication between fabs and designers - oh, /darn/. I suppose no-one will employ me to do just that. Nor would they employ me to secure their computer network. hmmm. Maybe I've dreamt my life.

From: Uma Bauhaus Look up proprietary. Look up monopoly. Discuss. Fine--Proprietary. You missed my point though. Microsoft was being sued over things what they charge for the way they bundle software to companies that make hardware. Apple doesn't even let other companies make their hardware. That was my point. I don't see how that makes Apple a better company--I personally think it makes them more greedy. If Apple would get off their high horse and take the stick out of their ass, they would have a product that actually has a chance of competing in the computer market. As it stands now, their chances of getting any more than 10% of the computer market is NONE.

no no one will employ you because on your resume you put Computer Skills: Macs which means three things, 1.) no sense of humor, 2.) doesnt play well with others due to the superiority complex, 3.) wastes company time complaining about using Excel to file TPS reports.
