Seriously. WTF? People aren't anti-mac, you're just taking it that way because people don't like some of Apple's policies. I can't remember the name of the poster, but there is someone on this forum who tells everyone that is critical of the U.S. government that they're Anti-Americans and to move to another country. You seem to be the same way about the Mac. People are ranking on certain things about it, and you keep trying to say that the Mac is the best priced machine out there and that everyone should buy one instead of a PC and that anyone who doesn't buy one is just being stupid and that anyone who thinks they're not a great deal are just anti-mac. Stop being so extreme about it. Just because people don't like some things about Apple's business model doesn't mean that they hate the mac. _____________________

and you keep saying mac people are compute illiterate --which is also an unfair statement. just sayin' The majority of mac users who have never used another operating system, particularly the ones who think the Imacs are wonderful machines (who don't even know what ghosting on an lcd monitor is), ARE usually computer illiterate, just like the person who would buy a Dell and not get rid of all the crap (like trial software and built-in spyware) that come with Dell's, who only use IE and don't put on antispyware programs. They also wouldn't know what ghosting on an lcd panel monitor are, and probably don't even understand the difference between an lcd and a crt other than the fact that one is flat. There are a lot of people who are computer illiterate using computers--and the only way for people to become computer savvy is by using computers more, and learning through trial and error (or classes and tutorials) and experimenting (which usually comes out of trying to get something to work that isn't working right). Since there isn't much to go wrong with macs, people who never learned much about computers will never really learn much about computers (who also don't pay attention to technical things in general, like the differences between a crt and an lcd monitor) when they're only using macs, with the exception of if they take classes or get tutorial cd's or dvd's. Trial and error, and an interest in learning how things work. This certainly isn't trying to say that computers with more errors like Windows are better--quite the contrary--macs have a superior operating system, hands down, bar none, period, and I've never seen anyone in these forums stating that Microsoft's OS is superior. When everything is working fine all the time, there's no need to experiment to learn more about the way things work. Most mac users who only have used macs are clueless about their hardware. _____________________

I actually don't have a problem with Macs, though I have used them and do not like them, to each their own. What i have a problem with is the smug elitism that some Mac users portray, and I especially have a problem with all the lame swipes that Apple is always taking at Windows and PCs in their advertising campaigns and conferences. It's not cute and witty - it's smarmy, sad and childish. If you can't promote your product without bashing another, it doesn't say much about your product, especially when a lot of what is promoted is steeped in riduclous hyperbole. If you like your computer and it works for you, great, be it Mac, Linux, Windows, or whatever you choose. No platform is superior in all areas.
As an avid gamer and software developer, the Mac is just not the right platform for me. Additionally, I like choice - I like to be able to choose my hardware manufacturers and components, and not be locked into one brand or the vision of one company. It is why I dislike the iPod so much and would never buy one. Apple also does not offer something that I use nearly every day - a viable tablet PC platform. If you like the Mac, wonderful, knock yourself out, but there is no reason to be so smug about it. Superiority complexes are never attractive. _____________________

I'm not anti-mac..I just like seeing Ulrika get riled up. Saying PC to her is a bit like saying atheism to kevin. The forums are closing, I am retiring, I might as well have some fun.
Oh, and if mac put out a decent computer at an affordable price, we would not laugh at mac users so much ![]() And its the mac's fault I cannot type. Damn GUI when everyone else was typing on DOS.. _____________________

To paraphrase (someone in the forums, I can't remember now who and I apologize in advance), I don't hate Macs, I just can't stand it's fan club.
A large portion of Mac users I've run into seem to have this prediliction for wanting to tell Me how superior their Mac is over My Windows PC, no matter how uninterested I tell them I am. Well you know what? My Windows systems have worked for Me since 1990 (when first tried Windows 3.0), and I have no intention on switching, no matter how great you think your system is. Also, I don't give a rat's a$$ how cool your Mac is. I love My PC. I built it Myself, component by component. I know exactly what's in it. I know how to fix it. I won't switch. Those videos were hilarious, unfortunately they're only referencing MacOS9.2 and earlier, which were the biggest joke of an operating system--OS2 and Next and BEos blew away MacOS9.2 and earlier--heck, AmigaOS3.1 blew away MacOS9.2 and earlier--almost anything blew away OS9.2 and earlier. Before OSX, I hated the Macintosh. They went from having the worst OS to having the best OS. With the exception of an EXE file, everything that guy in the first video said about OS9.2 was true.
I love OSX. _____________________

So, the best way to really get car-literate is to buy a car, that breaks down often? ![]() Now, I've go you, Fmeh! You are just making fun with us. Admit it: You are a Mac user yourself! ![]() Actually, you're right about getting car-literate by buying a car that breaks down often. That's a way that a lot of people learn about how cars work. They're forced into it because they can't afford anything else. Good car companies offer decent models of cars that are low-end to high end. Apple offers the equivalent of a special Geo Metro 3-cylinder car that has a special engine that's encased in a material that only mechanics can get into (the Imac) or a Mercedes (the mac pro). Apple conveniently makes their OS not work on other hardware, even though it's completely capable of doing such. It's an artificial barrier they create on purpose. Their OS is the only thing that makes their computers better, more efficient, and less prone to crashes. That's it--their hardware isn't ANY better, but they want people to pay more so they can be blessed with the opportunity to run their software because their low end non-upgradeable models aren't worth buying. _____________________

I simply buy brands that don't break down so often and drive - but maybe I am missing all the fun! ![]() |

everyone who wants to use a computer should be forced to start on one of the following:
a Unix mainframe with dumb terminal an 80's era DOS PC with mono monitor and no hard drive (two floppies are OK) or a Commodore 64 learn how computers actually WORK. Learn about directory structure and hard drive capacity. learn how to move files around the old fashioned way. Find out why God invented function keys. Learn the difference between the words UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD, and then you will be allowed to graduate to a computer with a mouse and color screen. The prime cause of illiterate computer users is the fact that computers no longer require you to be literate to use them. As far as I'm concerned, every computer user should have to install their own operating system, from scratch, from the command line, with no fancy GUI helpers at least once. XCOPY some files, tweak some .INI files, and put those DLL's in the right directory a few times, and you'll actually start to figure out how these things go together. then we'll see computer literate users. Macs (as the first mass-produced GUI computer) ruined computer literacy for the masses. As long as the computer is nothing but a toaster to its users, the users will be dumb as toast. |
