HOLLYWOOD (Sept. 4, 2005) -- Kanker Greenacre, father of the Tako racing sailboat, won the first Starboards Yacht Club weekly regatta today with two first place and one second place finish. As Darth Vader would have said: "impressive".

MarkTwain White unveiled a new extended course at Hollywood's Starboards Yacht Club, the Long Course. It combines the Standard Course with an additonal circumnavigation of Hollywood Island. The first race was a Stardard Course race. Races 2 and 3 were both run on the Long Course. Race 2 saw the lead change hands twice, a rare event on the Standard Course. Nber Medici served as race director.

For the future, the Standard Course will now be known as the Short Course, and today's Long Course will be considered the new Standard Course.

Additionally there is a "Longest Day Course" that will be used at some point.

Sailing Clinics for the Terrified
09-08-2005 22:25
As we integrate Right of Way (ROW) into our racing a number of skippers are stuggling not only with understaning the rules, but in applying them under pressure (and there IS pressure in sailboat racing). I will host two on-the-water clinics to help answer your questions and help you develop useful techniques for dealing with that pressure.

Paniked? Be at one with the sim...
aummmmmmmmm.

The first session will at 5pm tomorrow (Friday), right before the 6pm practice on Friday.

The second session will be at 1pm on Sunday, right before the 2pm Weekly Regatta.

Experienced skippers are also encourged to attend and assist me. If I have help we may set up some on-water racing situations. So lend your expertise.

Little Critters Sailboat Racing
09-10-2005 23:15
Little Critters sailboat racing returns to SL tomorrow with the first Weekly Races sponsored by Starboards Yacht Club and held in beautiful, low-lag Hollywood. Come as a little critter, buy the completely revised Tiny Tako 2.2 for a buck and have a ball.

It's bumper boats folks. No silly ROW rules to worry your furry little heads with. Just rock 'em sock 'em fun. It's roller derby on the water.

Invite your non-sailing friends to come a learn their starboard paw from their port paw.

A few of these little critter races and they will be ready for the big boys. Fresh meat!:)

Now, you little critters, pay no attention to the proceding three sentences. Just come have a good time.

Little Critter Races will he held each Sunday after the regular regatta. (Approximately 4pm).

SL Rentals Sailing Series - Second Regatta Results!
09-11-2005 06:57
Yesterday's regatta was a little broken up thanks to 3 or 4 disconnections and a phone call (when will Mark learn to take his phone off the hook?) but was still a roaring success and enjoyed by all.

Regatta Results:
Eloise Pasteur 4.5pts 1st place and $500
Kanker Greenacre 4.75pts 2nd place and $200
MarkTwain White 13pts 3rd place and $100
mush Caldera 15pts 4th place
Doc Nielsen 16pts 5th=
Helen Dayton 16 pts 5th=
Oliphant Mind 16 pts 5th=

Race results race 1:
Eloise 8:52
Kanker 8:55
Mark 9:21
Doc 9:51
mush 10:58
Helen and Oli DNF

Race results race 2:
Kanker 8:31
Oli 8:40
Eloise 8:49
mush 9:22
Helen 10:23
Mark DNS
Doc DNF

Race results race 3:
Eloise 9:08
Kanker 9:19
Mark 9:19
Helen 9:47
Doc 10:40
Mush 10:48
Oli DNS

Those who were there will remember the 4 into a tight gap for 2 doesn't go entertainment - the average of the times for this race was only 15s slower than for the first race, and not significantly different than the fastest (second) race.

For those curious about the impact of passengers it should be noted that mush, Kanker and I had a passenger in all three races, Helen did in at least the third race as did Mark. If passengers affect the performance of the Tako at all it's not in an obvious way.

High Winds Predicted for Weekly Regatta on Sunday
09-16-2005 17:06
HOLLYWOOD Sept. 16, 2005 -- Fall weather has fallen on Hollywood Sim and forecasters are predicting brisk winds averages 20 knots with a range of 10 to 30 knots for the sim from now through this Sunday's regatta (2pm).

SYC Commodore MarkTwain White also announces that the windward mark has been widened by 2 boat lengths. "6 to 8 boats coming into the windward mark on both tacks in higher winds is a recipe for potential disaster. Widening the marks might reduces some of the problem", says White.

He also recommends that skippers practice the course before this Sunday's regatta. There is a formal PRACTICE SESSION at 6pm on FRIDAY said White. The course is always available 24/7 for practice.

A Little Critter Regatta will follow the regular regatta. Forcasters are hopefull that winds might back down slightly for the LC Regatta.

Eloise 6:40 (after a penalty turn)
Doc 7:15 (placed last + penalties after a protest)
Mush 7:16
Mark 7:22
Helen 7:57

In the interests of widening participation in sailing the SL-rentals.com regattas will be changing to a minimal rules set for its remaining races:

No rerezzing
No editing up course (lag groundings can be edited back to the start of the leg, sim border etc.)
No editing other people's boats
Give searoom - you can't force a boat into a barrier (immovable object, sim border etc.). If they turn when they MUST to avoid the barrier if there is contact you have fouled them. If there are barriers on both sides then a 'knock for knock' policy will apply - no fault found.
If you start early recross and start again after the race has started.

Corrected Reular results for Sunday Sept. 18 Hollywood Regattea

Something is screwy with the math in the results MarkTwain posted,
and the points do not add up right for some of the participants. For
instance, I don't see how MarkTwain gets 10 points from finishing
4th, 5th, and 3rd.

Please check my math, but I think these are the correct results:

CORRECTED Regular Regatta Final Results

1. Oliphant Ming 2.25 pts
2t Eloise Pasteur 10 pts
2t mush Caldera 10 pts
4. Pixeleen Mistral 11 pts
5. MarkTwain White 12 pts
6. Nber Medici 21 pts
7t Helen Dayton 22 pts
7t Slitch nilsson 22 pts
9. Doc Nielsen 24 pts

You are quite correct Pixleen. And Eloise is correct as well. In my rush to get numbers compiled I incorrectly recorded a 3 not a 5 for myself in the second race. And in an effort to get results posted the same day, I missed the error. Thank you for catching the error.

This is a lot of work and I try to do my best. I am MORE than willing to turn over compiling these numbers and crunching them to anyone willing to relieve me of the task. I have plenty to do just dealing with events on the water and in the sim during the events. GRIN.

Nevertheless I will double my vigilence and ignore pressures to post the results quickly. GRIN.

I've made a scripted calculator for the regatta results. It's set up for 3 race regattas (LSL doesn't handle variable assignment dynamically), and will handle DNS, DNF and upheld protest results.

It's NOT idiot proof - you need to know all the results and put names and positions in AT THE END (it makes the scripting a lot nicer that way), but it will take the positions and do the number crunching for results and shout them out. It clearly asks (audibly so everyone can check) for the results of each racer by name and in each race.

It doesn't error check at all, and thanks to the delights of sorting lists in LSL it doesn't cope with equal finishes either - but it does say the score and the name so you can check them over.

I've sent copies to Mark, Kanker and Rain, if anyone else would like one let me know.

Anyone with good suggestions for improvements please IM me - or if you want one for different numbers of races per regatta.
