Aphrodite will post it as per request. This race will be interesting as I am newly interested. Thanks to Kanker for making such a wonderful boat and making it so accessible to everyone. He is also selling his boats on our Dock at Takes [Takes (25,125)] for those interested and new to the sailing scene.

Lessons

Lessons in Gualala at 4pm game time. Practise open water sailing, wide river and if the class goes well closed river sailing. Depending on experience of participants this could be anything from real fundamentals to advanced tactics, although my initial thought is that this should be a beginners class, covering the basic of the HUD, how to sail efficiently, what the numbers mean and some practise sailing in open spaces. |

Wednesday's Race Results
07-21-2005 20:05
Here are the race results from yesterday's open water race on the Great Inland Sea, starting from Takes, going around Celebes and Baffin, and finishing back at Takes. Sure, maybe we were measuring frame rate in SPF instead of FPS... and maybe the boats could have been lapped by one of RacerX's giant snails.. and maybe it felt like the Server Gods were laughing at us mere mortals as they threw people overboard and sent boats spiralling into the whirling vortices that are the four-sim-corners... Anyway, I digress.

I have to say that I really enjoy sailing the Tako, and was surprised how well I was doing in Wednesday's race - until I accidentally tried to TP while clicking the map to set a beacon!
![]() ![]() ![]() I tried RL sailing several years ago and hated it! This is much better - at least I know I'm not going to drown, and I don't have to dangle over the edge of the boat or constantly dodge the boom! ![]() _____________________

SLSF Sailboat Race today
07-28-2005 09:20
Ok, just for the fun of it an Impromptu Sailboat Race. Time to give the Tako a spin and let's have some fun. We were going to start it @ the Marina on Takes (25,125). We will be making the letter "B" around the Baffin and Celebes Islands. We want to WELCOME all newbies to the art of sailing.
We ask that you arrive a bit early before the countdown begins to allow you time to get your unique ID #. There will be prizes: 1st =$200, 2nd=$100, 3rd=$50. Come on down and show your sailing spirit. If interested just take a peek in the events and send us an IM for a TP ![]() |

SLSF Meeting - 12 Noon

Hey SLSF members. If you're in-world at noon today (SL time), stop by my marina in Gray for an informal SLSF meeting. Discussion topics may include: SLSF Cup Series, course design, wind generation, funding, race rules, etc. If you have any ideas of your own, bring them along.

Flying Tako launches?
08-01-2005 07:41
Wondering if anyone has compiled a current list of "Tako-friendly" launch sites.
I've seen some postings, but when I'm in-world, I can't recall all of the sites. To clarify, I mean places where we can rez the boats. I guess a note-card would be a good way to list these huh? |

Olympic Course Model at SLSF Docks
08-01-2005 22:28
Hello All,
Although a rookie at SLSF racing (three races under my belt), I have some RL racing experience and have been having long discussions with Kanker on the development of a SLSF racing series. More to come on that in the near future. For now I want to share with you what a RL race course would look like if imported into SL and used for SLSF racing. It is a modified version of the time honored and very frequently used Olympic sailing course. The advantage of an open water course such as the Olympic over "racing around the island" course is that the sailors have a wide range of strategy and tactics they can use to get from point A to point B. Nearly all RL sailboat races occur on open water with the course dictated by a small number of bouys. With Kanker's help and permission I have erected a model Olympic course at the SLSF docks in Grey (33,152). Please go there, read the cards, and fly the course reading the infomation on each model boat at each mark. I noticed there was some discussion at the Sunday meeting of using the Olympic course with FENCES. I have one thought on that: NOOOOOOO. (grin) Fences limit movement options in a sport that is all about positioning and maneuvering. Fences are not needed to keep people honest in these races. If you are in the front half of the race everyone has eyes on everyone else. So you would not get away with cutting a corner if you tried. And if you are way behind and cut a corner you have your conscious to live with and it wont matter a hill of beans in the end. So honor system: thumbs up. Fences: two thumbs way down. Grin. I am looking forward to setting up an SLSF Olympic course somewhere. Hopefully one of our Sim hosts will lend us the "sea room". Below is an attachment photo of the Olympic course model. i'm hooked
08-02-2005 11:26
After reading a post about the sailboat races on secondlifeherald.com I bought a Flying Tako and gave it a try. I had never sailed in RL before (of course, now I really really want to), but was very intrigued by the descriptions. Well, since then i've been spending most of my time in SL sailing its waters - simply great fun! Thanks, Kanker, for making sailing available to the SL community!!!
I have a suggestion re the 'fence'/'corner cutting' issue: A good friend of mine in RL is a semi-pro model glider pilot (airplanes) and in their competitions a handful of pilots who are not part of the current line-up act as referees. I would think something similar would easily be possible here. I'll try to be at the race this afternoon! |

Sailing in Mouselook
08-02-2005 14:50
Wondering what's the most popular mode of sailing the Tako for singlehanders.
Kanker mentions that he prefers sailing in the mouselook mode. I've tried it and can't seem to get used to it. I have a problem judging wind, etc because it's almost impossible to see the indicator, and I don't see the heads up display in mouselook. Now if I had a crew, it might be very different! Any tips, especially regarding racing, are welcome. |

boat launch location
08-03-2005 08:24
I'm not sure if this came up before (a quick search didn't yield results): the Kapor sim is almost entirely made of water and has a large west coast and a smaller coastline in the SE and, most importantly, allows rezzing of boats. It connects to another mostly-water sim to the south (Rosedale) which connects to the large water sims of Naveh, Kremer etc.
Should be nice open-water sailing there. |

Regretfully.. I missed the last sail boat race but one thing for sure. Once you are hooked it is fun. I have seen many of you and met many of you out on the circuits and it is very nice to see.
You know that you are hooked when you love to just go sail even alone for the fun of it. A nightly adventure. I know Eloise will sail circles around me but all in all it is so much fun. I'm very much unlike Marktwain and have no RL sailing experience but been on many a boat on lakes. So being able to relax and kick back on SL doing this is so sweet. Thanks Tanker for a great boat ![]() |

I very much enjoyed yesterday's race around FairChang Island and was really excited to come 2nd - my best result so far! By the time I was approaching the line for the last time to complete my third lap, my heart was pounding and I had sweaty palms - what a rush!
![]() Considering I didn't like my brief sailing experience in RL, I can't believe how much I am enjoying it in SL.... I suppose not getting wet or having to hang on for grim death and avoid being hit on the head by the boom might haveee something to do with it! ![]() Nice work there, Mark.... I will go and check it out shortly. Hope to see you again soon. ![]() _____________________

Here are the race results. Really tight finish (after correcting). Congratulations to Verking Raven for winning. We had a major malfunction somewhere in the automated start line/lap counter, so the results and lap times were a little screwed up!

Sailing areas list
08-03-2005 23:36
I've started a simple list, based on posts in this forum. I know a lot of other areas can be sailed, but this is a starter.
For example: Try to go under the bridge at Waterhead, and you may have a little adventure! Here's the list: (Corrections, additions invited) Tako-Friendly places: Gray (28,150) -- Kanker Greenacre's dock, where the first boats were sold. Alviso (180,50) -- JesAma Fountains Cayman (?,?) Zouk City -- Minky Mousehold's place (Watch for surf, which can push you!) Chukchi -- Southern shore- facing several sailing sims Lakeville sim (40, 140) Brace Coral's 'hood Gualala (105, 245) re: Eloise Pasteur Takes (25,125) Aphrodite Wishbringer -- near Baffin and Celebes Islands Kapor sim (North of Rosedale, leading to more water) |

... We had a major malfunction somewhere in the automated start line/lap counter, so the results and lap times were a little screwed up! Kanker, these results confirm my suspicion I had late late night about what happened (of course, after i could check them). I had crossed the line pretty much around the 0:00 start time - but still too early, so I got the "too early, turn around!" message from the startline, which I did. But apparently i was still crossing the line when the the countdown had finished and it registered my 0:00 start (which i didn't see in the chaos ![]() So, at least this part was not really a "screw up"/bug. I guess it depends on how we define the rules, e.g. if you're still 'at' the start line right at the start time, does that count as a valid start even though you had 'touched' the line prior to the end of the countdown. Of course that doesn't explain why nber's time didn't register. |

Rmike: Thanks for that list. We really need something like that. I'd like to add the Balance/Fame lake and river course to the list. There is a public boat-rezzing area on the northeastern shore in Fame. There is one bridge on the river course that is about half a meter too low for the Tako's mast.
Online: I think you hit the nail on the head. My start line detector routine isn't smart enough to detect when someone is straddling the line when the clock reaches zero. It's tricky to do so, because each individual prim in a linked object triggers the collision event, and each prim's name is the same as the root prim. So you can't use the collision_start or collision_end events directly. I'll fix it in the near future. The funny thing is if you had managed to recross within a minute (instead of 1:31 later), that recrossing would not have counted because it would have come too soon after the first (there is a minimum possible time between laps to prevent cheating). But then we wouldn't have found this particular bug. _____________________
