Kanker: Yep, that explains it. I guess, unless there is a way that only one prim triggers the collision there's no easy way around it. According to this logic, the minimum time you mentioned would also be neccesary to prevent the stern from triggering the end of the lap that the bow had just started (assuming you're slow enough), right?

Add: Another thought. Could it be that it didn't register nber's time because i had already 'completed' one lap? As far as I remember i wasn't the only boat that crossed late/again, but i'm not sure.

Problem fixed?
08-05-2005 09:06
I think that Kanker has fixed the problem with my Tako so that it records my starts. He seemed to think that somehow my boat got "corrupted". MMMM, did I do that? Can I corrupt an inanimate object? JUST JOKING!

Thanks Kanker for your help - you are great!

SLSF Inaugural Olympic Course Regatta SUNDAY 4PM
08-05-2005 22:27
SLSF OLYMPIC COURSE REGATTA --- 4PM SUNDAY in DESTINY

The first SLSF regatta (3 races) using the Olympic Course (modified for SL) will occur in DESTINY this Sunday at 4pm. Each sailor will sail in all three races with the winner determined by the SLSF regatta scoring system (amazingly identical to the system used in most RL regattas around the USA and world).

For more information on the Olympic Course see post #84 above.

The winner of each race will be awarded 0.75 points. Second place finish will get 2 points. Third place finisher gets 3 points and so forth. Obviously low score wins. If a skipper does not race all three races he/she will be assigned whatever points he earns for the races he DID sail plus a number equal to the number of racers in the races he missed plus one. For example if Suzy Sailor placed 3rd in the first race, 1st in the second race, and did not race or did not finish the third race (which had six boats in it) her scores would be as follows:
3.00
0.75
7.00
for a total regatta score of 10.75.

Many thanks to JonyBlade Codesmith and Gene Jacobs (you to Sierra) who have make Destiny available for SLSF races, including this inaugural event using the Olympic course.

MarkTwain White will serve as race coordinator with the help of Kanker Greenacre and Nber Medici.

SLSF Olympic Course Regatta Results
08-07-2005 18:28
INAUGURAL SLSF OLYMPIC COURSE REGATTA
OFFICIAL RESULTS

Notice: The unofficial results announced after the regatta were in error. In my attempt to score the regatta quickly so that people could get results before logging off, I inadvertently gave the second thru tenth finishers one more point that they were entitled to. The winner gets 0.75 points. I got that correct. But second place should get 2 points not 1 point (I erroneously gave 1 point). Third gets 3 not 2. And so forth. Thus I inadvertently diminished the value of winning a race. The correct results are below.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER: ONLINE DOESBURG!

SLSF "Critter Sailboat Racing" soon to begin!!
08-08-2005 12:24
Hiya Everyone,

Kanker Greenacre, in his never ending pursuit to have everyone in Secondlife sailing has just released the Beta unit of the SLSF Tini Tako Sailboat!! (Kanker, YOU Rock!!) Sierra Baron and I had the honor of "testing" it all night last night, I think we may have sailed some 50km's in the Tini Tako last night enjoying every minute of it!! (She was a bunny Rabbit and I was a squirrel haha)

In our efforts to increase SLSF attendance and generally increase the amount of sailing options available to everyone, Sierra and I will begin hosting various SLSF sanctioned events (following approval) one of these future events being "Critter Tako Racing"!

I have a "base critter" avatar, I want to spruce up a bit (give it a sailing theme - or something?) I want to sell the tini avatars for 1L$ to go along with the 1L$ Tini Tako offered by Kanker Greenacre to provode everything the "newbie sailor" that is looking for fun and laughs needs onsite.

The track latout used will be my own person design I call the RAAI layout! - it is a scientifically calculated route which follow EXACTLY the "inside edge" of some sort of a "mass" in the center of a body of water - hence the name "Race around an Island" style of racing (emphasis is on fun mostly)

The smaller size of the "Tini Tako" allows a more open track area selection - in other words more boats can fit into a narrower crossing and such. I was also considering a "cross water" type of race from sim to sim and possibly even a "Relay Race" type of cross sim sailing event.

I hope to have the SLSF Critter Race launched this week, either Wednesday or Thursday using some small RAAI style layout (professional sailboat racers are recomended to stay in the more strict olympic catagories) this race is MOSTLY for fun and for NEWBIES to learn "what does the little white streamer on the top of the mast mean?" and "how do I move the sail around?" level of sailers.

SLSF Members are INVITED to volenteer to help new sailors learn sailing at a BASIC level with MOST emphasis on having fun and laughing so they want to keep with sailing and "grow" into Olympic Tako Racers :)

Any and ALL comments are welcome!!!

Jony :)

Clarification on Wedneday's Regatta

Please note that Wednesday's Regatta is at 6pm as announced in the title, not 4pm Sunday as listed in the text of the message.

Regatta
08-09-2005 09:14
Having won the inaugural regatta, I'd like to volunteer to assist in this one (as referee, helper, time keeper, whatever).

Also, I've been thinking it would be nice to have a 'SLSF trophy' of sorts. I have a few ideas on how it might look, but I'm fairly new to actually building things in SL (i'm still gonna try). Maybe we could have some sort of 'design' competition for it.

Open Waterways
08-09-2005 09:58
You know, if we had open waterways in SL, as we do in RL, we wouldn't have to beg, borrow, and steal water resources for sailing. I did put a proposal up for this, but it's only collected a few votes so far.

It's getting better, Budka. There was a time when we didn't have Linden-owned protected land or void sims.

Online, this is such a great idea in regards to the trophy (AND the design competition)! :D

Racing Rules
08-10-2005 05:35
Kanker asked me to post this for discussion.

I went over the RL rules to see which ones would apply to SL sailing where the wind
can't be interfered with. Here's the short list.

1. No contact between boats. The striking boat is penalized.

2. Starboard tack has the right of way.

3. An overtaking boat must not interfere with the other boat's course so long as its mast is "behind" the other along their direct line of sail.

4. No contact with the race buoys. If contact is made the boat must make a 360 around the buoy.

5. No early start. If started early the boat must make a 360 around a starting buoy.

There could be more, but I think this set will let tactics play a larger role in the races.

What do you think?

Re: Racing Rules
08-10-2005 08:03
1. no contact

I think it would be nice if we could guarantee it, and personally I have tried not to hit any other boat, but I think it will be difficult to achieve. For one, there's always lag, especially during a race when the sim is working hard on all the boats. There have been several occasions when I had absolutely no control over the boat for a while, or it seemed 'stuck' for a few seconds and in the next frame it was 2 or 3 boat lenghts ahead of my previous position. The second reason is the limited space in SL. Unless we race in very large bodies of water, it's often just too crowded. I think using the new 'mini-Tako' might help with that. Lastly, it's often very hard to see other boats from the overhead perspective (and hard to race in mouselook). This is much different from RL where you have peripheral vision available.

----
2. starboard tack has right of way

Hmmm. I'm unclear on what exactly that means (not a RL sailor - I only know starboard is the right side of the boat, correct?)

----
3. overtaking boat must not interfere...

Again, I'm not quite sure what that means. Does it mean that, once your mast is 'ahead' you can interfere with the other boat's course, e.g. by turning towards the boat you just passed, which would have to do the same turn in order to avoid hitting your boat? I'm afraid most I said for #1 applies here too.

----
4. no contact with race buoys

That should be possible. Though lag might interfere with this one too, it seems to me that it mostly causes displacements along the front back axis (and sometimes up-down), so unless you're heading straight for a buoy, lag should not be such a big problem.

----
5. no early start

The only no-brainer :) since we already do it. I do like the fact though that a 360 around the start buoy is required, instead of our simple re-crossing the start line.

----
All-in-all, I think the limited space and lag are the two main reasons that would keep us from strictly enforcing most of these rules. As I said we could race in larger bodies of water or use tiny boats to reduce the limited-space-issue, or for the regatta we could also limit the number of boats racing at any one time (which should help with lag too), but then it'll take several races to determine a winner, e.g. two 3-race heats of up to 6 boats. The best two boats of each of these are automatically qualified for the final race, plus the two boats with the next best race times (or points). Final is again 3 races. I'm not sure this is feasible.

I agree they're all seemingly good rules, but like Online I have issues with the 'no contact' rule. Lag and the coding might well mean that you don't have control over whether you hit or not.

Rules like 'intentionally ramming', 'prolonged contact' etc. are also awkward.

I've hit and been hit in both racing and certainly before racing, and can hand on heart say I've never aimed to hit anyone and have actually tried my damndest not to, and usually tried to dodge people hitting me but lag gets in the way.

I'm sorry, I don't want to be DQed because lag got to me, the lag we had on Sunday was so bad I quit the regatta even without that rule.

The rest are OK, but yes, the 'starboard tack' should be clarified before universally adopted.

Hi! Here the results from todays 'late' regatta on the Olympic Race Course on Destiny. Despite my careful note taking, I did make a mistake during the announcements. In fact, there was another two-way tie for 9th place. Everything else should be correct.

Congratulations to the winner, Oliphant Ming! The full regatta results follow.

8: Rmike Javelin - +00:06:23 (+00:00:16)
9: Alisha Dingo - +00:07:44 (+00:00:42)
10: Kitto Flora - DNF - (-00:00:01)

A few notes:
- Budka's boat did not register (DNR) in races 1 and 2.
- Kitto did not finish (DNF) race 3.
- A few boats crossed early during race 3 (Alisha, Kitto, Budka & MarkTwain). Of those only Alisha's time didn't register for the start and had to turn around. The other boats were still 'at' the start line at time 0:00:00, hence it registered their start time as -0:00:01.

Thanks all for three exciting races!

Rules Discussion
08-10-2005 21:48
Budka, Online, Eloise, et. all:

There is a meeting scheduled this Friday to discuss right of way rules (ROW) for SLSF sailboat racing (i.e. Expert Rules). It will be a brainstorming session to discuss all of the points raised already plus others. It ISN'T designed as a town hall meeting. Our time togeter is limited in SL so the idea is to have those current SLSF racers who have experience in competative RL sailboat racing discuss the issues and provide the basis of drawing up a workable set of ROW rules for SL that can actually work in the SL environment.

The meeting is this FRIDAY AT 2PM. Location to be announced. A preliminary set of rules will be provided as a starting point. Those with RL sailboat RACING experience are encouraged to participate in the brainstorming, but we don't have time to educate non-RL sailboat racers in the nuances of racing rules for sailboats. So, please, if you attend and intend to brainstorm with us, we will assume you are familiar with the basic tenets of the "RACING RULES OF SAILING" (a formal set of rules) as followed by RL sailboat racers all over the world.

Although there is no reason the brainstormers couldn't have a peanut gallery sitting behind them. GRIN. It is our hope that in the brief time we have together we can hash out the major tenets of a set of SLSF Expert Racing Rules that work well given the limitations of SL.

Note that we we have a set of Casual Rules (similar to those presently used) that will be used by those folks that are new to sailboat racing and want to race withoug the burden of ROW racing. The SLSF will sponsor both Expert Races and Casual Races.

For those experienced racers that cannot make the meeting, I intend to post whatever rules flow out of the brainstorming session on this forum for comment before they are codified for SLSF racing.

See you on Friday.

Must be that lag thing. I was not over my version of SL. I wonder if the others concur on their "so called foul" (attempting to sound humorously indignant with tongue firmly planted in cheek).

Not only that, but Oliphant was way too fast. He must have modified his boat or something.

GRIN. Just kidding on the second point.

Thanks for a great job Online!

Mark (re: the 'foul'): The same thing happened before in one of the old races (see posts #95 through #97). It's more or less a 'hidden feature' of the start line. ;) However, i was indeed susprised that your start time was negative too, because what I remember from the start it only called out 3 early starts (Alisha, Budka, Kitto), not four.

Kanker: would it help if you raised the startline prim so that only the mast and sail could 'hit' it?

Here's a copy of a message to Kanker- he liked the idea, so please be our guest at the Yahoo group listed. I don't think you need to subscribe to view the pics.
(Suggestions- ideas welcome- I don't claim to know a thing about the group stuff, but it looks like it works okay)

I've uploaded some snapshots here at this new group site. I'm not trying to do an official thing, but if it's useful, then that's cool

If you think it may be of interest, other people can post photos and/or files there too.

I don't want to compete with other Tako sites, or otherwise confuse Tako fans, so if you choose to pass this on to the SL forum fans or not, it's okay.

I am in the process of creating a site for our SL business. I have added a SLSF page to it
that can hold links /events/ pics and documents - if you the group wants.

Take a look at http://dalliez.com/SLSF/tabid/53/Default.aspx
