Oh well I just logged in to world + forums for first time in months, after a broadcast-email from Linden.

HUD looks wicked :-) Fullbright doesnt sounds like a big deal. Being able to move attachments around is definitely useful. Nothing new on the scripting front (can escape and unescape URLs...), and overall the world basically looks the same as it did 6 months ago.

I have it on good authority that SecondLife will become wickedly awesome by March 2006, since most of the last 6 months were spent rewriting SecondLife, essentially from scratch, to get it into a form that is maintainable and easily extendable.

Not there yet though as far as I can see so not really sure what the point of the 1.7 spam email was

Wake me up when it's done :)

You mean to tell me - that I could be SAVED all this suffering, and all this sitting there waiting three minutes just to see how a texture I USED TO BE ABLE TO SEE RIGHT AWAY will look on a build - if they would just . . .

. . . add some lousy machines in their office?

THEN THEY NEED TO DO THIS.

If for no other reason, because it would pay off hugely in retaining all these new accounts we are getting.

coco

Not quite. They'd have to redesign some architecture of their systems to handle the redundancy. If the data you want is in two locations, how do you decide where to go?

The systems that are the asset servers aren't cheap, either.

I guess HUD is cool but judging from the HUD housing developments I have seen on a nearby Indian reservation I am not holding my breath. Why in the heck do computer companies "borrow" common terms and make it seem that they invented them?

HUD = Housing Urban Developement.

Well. Tonight was much worse than last night, with no particular reason why.

Tonight I couldn't do much of anything. Click on "edit" - wait a bit. Edit finally comes up. Click on a tree to move it - wait a bit. Tree finally moves.

EVERYTHING is like that.

And this is in my relatively good-running sim (normally) with hardly anybody around.

I hope they fix this and the textures.

coco

P.S. Logging on and off didn't fix it, either.

I'm just noting that "worst updates evah" seem to coincide with massive influxes of new residents. Everyone's mentioning 1.5, and I joined in one of the early 1.5s (july '04), amidst what was then a slew of new accounts. Now, we have 4 digit days (1000+ new accounts) from what I'm hearing, early in the release of a new version. I have no hard data, but I can see how this confluence of new users and new software might lead to excessive bugginess.

That said, when the grid has become unusable in the past (as it seemed when I logged on earlier tonight), LL has offered day-by-day credits, which seem in order for premium account holders given the present debacle. I, for one, could have been building creature avs galore for Halloween, if the 1.7 difficulties weren't making building itself impossible.

im just curious as to why the majority of my scripts are broke or malfunctioning. I was making an amusement park with lots of fun rides. Now they are all crippled if they work at all. A ride I had which was called by several people the most amazing thing they saw in SL had people hopping off because they thought I was playing as joke on them when 1.7 started.

Scripts don't work anymore, and me paying like a fool for tier that doesnt return (all I get is pitiful dwell and, the best part, lots of people thanking me for what we put together and how much fun they had) makes me wonder why I am trying to entertain people . Unless I sell things, I am SOL, paying for the privilage of making people happy and not making LL produce interesting content. So, my land is for sale, I will revert to my lowest tier and let others create my entertainment for me.

I tried to make the world more engaging and interesting. We had no -ingo, escorts, casinos or malls, but a steady stream of happy people. but all it does is take money from my pocket to make SL more attractive so LL can make more money. LL wants us to build an engaging world to show new visitors how great this is, then doesnt give me a way to repay my investment (I am not trying to profit, but breaking even would be nice), but the pathetic dwell pays me maybe $10 a month on $125 in tier a month + expenses for rides.

I tried, but the deck is stacked. Unless you make and sell the latest and greatest fashions/sex balls/gadgets/ or what not, you are screwed. I tried making an engaging place that people could enjoy without spending money, but then I realized it was only me that was spending money

I could have lived with that, but when several thousand lindens worth of rides get broken by the new update, it makes no sense to give of myself.

You know the old phrase, give them a hand, and they will take an arm. Cashing out, sadly, but LL has no one else to blame for these decisions. Shit on people who make your platform more engaging and interactive, all you have is a platform.

I honestly feel awful for all the people that have been having issues with 1.7. And I feel almost guilty because I haven't had these issues myself. :(

The only reason I'm not in world more right now is due to my crudy internet going up and down, and overtime at work. :p

So my vote was nope. Because I've had updates in the past that did give me issues.

Yeah, Mulch. The deck is stacked. I've been saying so my entire duration on these forums, but I also have my own personal little Greek chorus that follows me around the forums and tells me I'm just imagining things.

What was your place? Wondering if I have been there.

As for this update, it has made the game virtually unplayable for me, and apparently for a lot of others, too. I figure they are gonna have to fix it somehow, or they will lose probably at least half of us.

Wrong 1.2 was the most Stable update we ever had. All updates afterward have been unstable.

Not 'wrong', Magnum. It's all relative - so don't be so quick to dismiss my opinion, please.

Every release has been a pain, but FOR ME, 1.2 was the worst. I lost my house and my Stillman suntower - poof! gone for good.

So for me, yes, 1.2 was the worst evah.

Mars Hotel in Pierce (the land where 3 rivers meet, go to pioerce, ull see the land for sale is all ours)

When the majority of my rides broke, it tells me its time to cash out.

What good is an amusement park, where I have paid for rides that worked fine, but now because of script priority, the majority are broken =(

Sansarya and I peiced together like 10 small chunks of land to put togeth an awesome place (the majority of non protected land on the sim), and we have a constant stream of people coming back bringing friends cuz they enjoyed their time there.

But the dwell doesnt pay tier, and this "monotized platform" doesnt reward people who make fun gathering places. If we dont create content to sell ala capitalism, we lose. Which was fine, we didn't mind paying out of our pocket, it was a labor of love to do what we did.

But when all the work and items we purchased are negated at the whim of 1.7 (read the TOS we all agreed on), then whats the point? start over. repurchase all the rides and pay the scripters to work around these fixes even though we already purchased the rides?

no thanks, my heart is broken, the love is gone. now I am selling my land and moving on. I still have my 512 in jessie, so whatever. so much for my contribution to the community. its been fun, but I dont think I have it in me to get everything working only for 1.8 to break it again.

I understand how you feel. But maybe 1.8 wouldn't break it again. (Likely wouldn't.) You could contact the scriptors and maybe they would be willing to fix the scripts for you for free?

Okay, I understand you're upset. However, let's post-mortem things a little to see where it might have all gone off-kilter for you as it might help other players as they develop attractions and gathering places.

From: Mulch Ennui
Scripts don't work anymore, and me paying like a fool for tier that doesnt return (all I get is pitiful dwell and, the best part, lots of people thanking me for what we put together and how much fun they had) makes me wonder why I am trying to entertain people . Unless I sell things, I am SOL, paying for the privilage of making people happy and not making LL produce interesting content. So, my land is for sale, I will revert to my lowest tier and let others create my entertainment for me.

So, though you appreciate the grateful smiles on your visitors faces you're frustrated with your high tier fees and ride development costs as they aren't being covered by your Dwell monies.

You had two goals: 1) Make people happy 2) Break even

And once you failed to achieve goal 2 (Break even) then goal 1 (Make people happy) went out the window.

From: Mulch Ennui
I tried to make the world more engaging and interesting. We had no -ingo, escorts, casinos or malls, but a steady stream of happy people. but all it does is take money from my pocket to make SL more attractive so LL can make more money. LL wants us to build an engaging world to show new visitors how great this is, then doesnt give me a way to repay my investment (I am not trying to profit, but breaking even would be nice), but the pathetic dwell pays me maybe $10 a month on $125 in tier a month + expenses for rides.

We now arrive at the crux of the problem: You failed to keep expenses down. It's a common mistake.

Tier fees that are far too high to be covered by Dwell monies. You had too much land as you needed lots of prims for all of your rides. However, even if you had only 25-percent of the land, 25-percent of the prims, and 25-percent of the attractions you still wouldn't have broken even. But you would've been much closer.

From: Mulch Ennui
I tried, but the deck is stacked. Unless you make and sell the latest and greatest fashions/sex balls/gadgets/ or what not, you are screwed. I tried making an engaging place that people could enjoy without spending money, but then I realized it was only me that was spending money

It's not that you didn't try, but after failing to keep your expenses down you failed to PERSIST. Instead of crunching your numbers to see where you could cut the fat, then making the necessary reductions, you threw in the towel.

From: Mulch Ennui
I could have lived with that, but when several thousand lindens worth of rides get broken by the new update, it makes no sense to give of myself.

Okay.. we now have a synthesis of what goals 1 and 2 were really about: You're willing to make people happy but only if you break even. Your goals were in the wrong order.

It should've been: 1) Break even 2) While making people happy

There's nothing wrong with that. It's very, very true that people should pay for their own fun. You're under no obligation to pay for anyone else's fun.

From: Mulch Ennui
You know the old phrase, give them a hand, and they will take an arm. Cashing out, sadly, but LL has no one else to blame for these decisions. Shit on people who make your platform more engaging and interactive, all you have is a platform.

At no point did anyone either at LL or anyone in-world point a gun at your head and say, "Buy a ton of land, pay a high tier fee, and build a money-losing amusement park." I can't stress enough that you FAILED TO KEEP YOUR EXPENSES DOWN for which you have only yourself to blame.

And "several thousand lindens" invested in scripted rides is around US$28. If you had PERSISTED you might have spent this much on a regular basis for the development of new rides and attractions. It's not an amusement park killer, it's merely a SETBACK. But when faced with this setback you decided it was easier to close your park and un-parcel rather than rise to the challenge of finding a way of making your business model work.

So.. crunch your numbers, get your tier fees down down down, have a realistic idea of what Dwell monies actually pay and what your ongoing expenses will be. Just like RL, the kids that got their homework done first and then went out to play have an easier go in the business world than the kids that went out to play first and then did their homework at the last minute.

Sorry, Mulch... version 1.7.x didn't kill your amusement park. You did.

I wouldn't say this is the "worst upgrade ever" (having just entered SL in 1.4, 1.5 was by far the worst). However, it's the strangest one. Preview 1.7 was incredibly fast and high-performant. It was duly tested by a thousand users over a period of 4 months. On the Saturday before the 1.7 upgrade, a "release candidate" was launched in the Preview grid, which was, in a word, awesome.

When 1.7 came out in the main grid — much faster hardware — I couldn't believe my eyes: not even the first 1.7 preview version was that bad, in terms of texture problems, overall lag, and asset servers failing all over the place. If it weren't for some of the new features, it looked like SL had rolled back the preview version back 6 months, and deployed it "by mistake".

A few of us have been humourously commenting the need of believing in "code freezes", and that some overenthusiast developer may have changed or tweaked something from Saturday to Monday which "would even get us more performance!" and that was a BIG mistake.

I was on the preview grid with 107 avatars in a sim and no lag. The next day, there was a new patch, and there were 84 in the same sim — no lag again. At one point in the preview grid, there were 240 people online on just a handful of sims. Absolutely no lag or texture problems. All this on old hardware, mind you. It was utterly impossible to have foreseen what came out on Monday. The preview grid was tested and tested and tested, rock-solid, flawless. What happened on Monday?

Well, SL doesn't scale well, that is the only possible explanation: something that is tried on a (relatively) small scale, simply does not apply to the world at large. Why this is so, it's for the Lindens to figure out. But it is not a good sign. If 1.8 (or will it be 2.0?) comes out in March, we'll have around 250,000 users by then, and perhaps 4,000 os so sims. If 4 months testing 1.7 were basically worthless to figure out what goes wrong in the main grid, and testing data does not apply to the real situation, I wonder what LL can do. I fear that 1.8 will be much worse than 1.7 — even if testing on the preview grid starts now. After all, no amount of testing in the 1.7 preview allowed anyone to foresee what would happen...

The great news is that LL tends to believe it's all concentrated on a few texture and cache-related bugs which are easily fixed. I found a minor one myself — on the Mac, the open file limit is hit quite quickly, and, of course, that causes all sorts of problems. But it's easily fixed (just run ulimit -S -n 1000 and start Second Life from the Terminal). I wonder if the Windows version suffers from the same problem. You won't hit the file limit quickly if you stay in the same sim and don't do much scripting/notecard writing, thus I believe that this would be overlooked easily in the Preview.

FALSE.

LL rewards gathering place/attraction developers EVERY MONTH using the Developers Bonus, which is paid to the top-two percent of parcel-holders with more than 512-sq.m of land based on and paid out according to total Dwell/Traffic scoring for that month.

The total prize for an individual parcel holder might be equivalent to a subsidy and only cover part of their tier fees, cover their entire tier fee, or even exceed the total cost of their tier. The smaller the parcel and the greater the Dwell/Traffic scoring the more likely the DevBonus prize for that parcel holder will cover a larger percentage of tier fees.

And yes, contrary to a popular misconception, you really can cover your tier fees _and_ monthly premium through Dwell money alone.
