there's a saying about everything looking like a nail when you're a 2 yr old with a hammer.
granted there are drs that are the same way with meds, but there are a lot of better ones too. as a patient, it's YOUR body. you have to decide if what the dr is saying makes sense to you. some of the anti med ppl seem to have another problem... they want us all to use their preferred hammer..
that said, i have 2 thoughts in defense of meds.
1) they often work relatively quickly if they're going to work. that can help one get up and running enough to get more coping strategies in place, including therapy, exercise, diet, even working.. things some can't do until they are able to cope a little better. i also don't see a need to suffer extra months in the name of being med-free unless it's important to the patient.
of course, there are other factors. i have heard (NOT confirmed) that ppl with a single bout of depression brought on by something (a death or divorce etc) tend not to respond as well to meds, which wouldn't surprise me. also a mild depression may not be worth the side effects for some folks. however, for some of us.. the meds are as vital to our existence as insulin to a diabetic. the rabid anti-med ppl can stick it up their nose >8D
2) if you do happen to be so desperate you have no quality of life and/or are thinking of suicide, as far as i can see you have little to lose. you can always try them, say 'ha i told you so,' and do yourself in later... but at least give it a real try. (nooo not advocating suicide just looking at it from the depressive's point of view)

From: Ananda Sandgrain Before you go listening to all these people being so terribly sympathetic and making things so terribly serious, check a few of the more obvious things...
-Are you sleeping enough? -Are you eating decent food? -Have you seen the sun recently? -Do you exercise at all? -Have you gotten together with RL friends recently?
Anyone can take a nosedive if they aren't paying attention to their physical and social health. Right on the money here
