Well I guess it could be bye bye Slootsville then... Not that it helped much, but it did! Have to wait and see what teh Developers Directory is about and what not, but still...

From: someone
Dear Second Life Resident,

This is to announce that we are planning to discontinue the Developer
Incentive program by the end of March, 2006. We are aware that you are
a
past recipient of this award and want to assure you that our aim is to
phase this change in so that any disruption this causes you can be
mitigated to some extent over a transitional period.

The program phase-out will begin January 1st, with the overall award
amount for December capped at November levels. The total amount paid
out
will then be reduced by 33% each month beginning with the February 1
payment and ending with the final payment on April 1, 2006.

The Developer Incentive program was originally created as a way to
recognize outstanding content creation in Second Life. But as many of
you know, the program has not been a total success in rewarding the
wide range of Second Life creativity. Our goal will be to replace the
Developer Incentives with new programs designed to support the full
scope of Second Life creators, beginning with the Developer Directory.
If you have ideas or comments for these programs, please send them to
us at proposals@lindenlab.com.

Thank you,

Linden Lab

Sorry if this is a repost, or i've missed a thread, I don't look here much anymore :p, is so please post the URL, thankees

Don't give up Willow! This just means it's time to ask all the people who enjoy Slootsville so much to carry their share of the cost.

I wonder how much this decision has to do with camping chairs.

How much was the average Incentive? What kind of money are we talking about?

Well personally mine waivered a fair bit, depending on stuffs, but in over a year i've ranged between $45 - $90 a month to help with the cost of the sim.

A lot of us saw this one coming.

I wonder what the impact to folks like Anshe is going to be. Also, I wonder if sims like IceDragon are going to disappear. Both types apparently provide services that residents want. I wonder if their business models can survive DI going away. I also wonder what ripples in the economy this is going to cause.

I wish we had more information on the alternative programs LL is considering.

Yeah I was wondering the same sort of things, I mean Slootsville doesn't get alot of DI anyways, but you know, any little helps, and now I won't even have that, just when we had plans underway to try and bump it up a bit! Figures :p

I assure you that they will be subjective. You think we hear cries of FIC now? Just wait....

After two months of Minerva (RPG) I get into the Developers list get my first 50bucks and then BOOM, we don't want to give Mister any more money!

I got married two weeks after the UK government got rid of MIRAS (a discount in tax for married couples)
My son was born on the 4th of Dec. if he had just waited till the 1st we would have got that child investment fund!
and now this!

I'm bad luck I tell ya!

I'm guessing: everything
12-19-2005 12:38
My sense of the thing is that camping chairs were driving the thing into the dust (though moneyballs were the same thing, the camping chairs were guaranteed so people were happy to leave their avies there overnight). We were already affected by the camping chairs: for the first time in almost a year the spa didn't make the Dwell list in November, though we run 3-5 well attended events per week, have residences, plaza, etc. We've always been mid-list since February of last year. Last month, we were knocked off altogether, so the camping chairs already eliminated the biggest help of Dwell for us.

Clearly, the intent of the developers incentives were being missed but I do hope something that actually rewards content (in the manner of the FFRC maybe, but larger scale and linden financed?) is put in their place. I wrote in to suggest that perhaps they could consider grants for projects or teir relief for those who choose to continue actually providing content in the form of interesting interactive builds, events, etc.

What do you guys think could be done instead of Dwell to reward development? Also, do you think this will mean a lot of people off-loading tier?

I am worried that places that depend on the incentive are going to cut back now and it could mean less events and more job losses in SL. :(

Im wondering if this means the world might be ready for some nominal admission fees to help cover the cost of areas like this that everyone enjoys.

Or subscription support, like NPR does.

Well I for one am glad its going.

Gone are the days when it actually rewarded those who were actually creative and did something for SL. These days it is all about camp chairs, money balls, and blatent abuse of the dwell system.

*If* a replacement program comes around, I would hope that at the very least it could be that no same person recieve DI for months and months on end, and that new people always had a chance.

Well from what I've seen, LL's 2006 focus is on revenue. Maybe they got new management in that area, but it seems that LL does intend to 'share in the revenue streams' of business going forward.

Margins will be tighter and some models will go away. Will it be good for SL? I don't know; I'm not a big fan of the dwell game, but LL's focus is shifting.

They have investors, and it's time to monetize this, and not focus on ideals. As was said in the recent townhall, revenue is one of the primary decision makers now as to what features get dropped and added.

If this is indeed a shift in focus, we can expect more incentives to be dropped, such as the 10% group land bonus and quantity discounts on tier.

I'm hoping for a new system that isn't as easily gamed.

What sucks is, there are some people who actually didn't abuse it. Few, but some. And chances are there won't be a replacement in this vein.

While it may be the result of LL waking up and saying "hey, wait, everyone is gaming this" - the solution would have been to restructure it in that case, not eliminate it.

I think that while outwardly this may seem like a move that is meant to improve the community (and in a way it could, but it will likely make it tougher to be a new user) I have a feeling that the primary motivation is that they just don't want to be paying people every month; they want people to be paying them.
