This may be hubris (or bannable) but I think Jesse Linden owes an apology or two. We've got four veteran broadcast professionals and one experienced SL-Video producer who say "snowball's chance in hell" to "pretty damned unlikely" and you got feisty about it.

Yes, I understand this may be a "pet project" of your's and that you are only human as well, but I (like most people) talk differently when wearing the corporate garb than when not. In a similar vein I once saw a guy try to win an argument in an internal meeting by saying "I'm right, I have an MBA from MIT"; he was nearly laughed out of the room.

Disagree with your customers, but don't condescend; that's impolite.

You know, those who don't want to do this, or think it can't be done, need not apply.

Someone like Dote-Dote can go ahead and apply.

We've actually been joking in our group forum lately that Neualtenburg has turned into Survivor: Neualtenburg Island. From the thread:

What happens when you put 20 people on an island and tell them to interact using an untested governmental system? Join us next week on Survivor: Neualtenburg Island! when Dianne and Ulrika race to eat a paper version of the constitution, Gwyn describes how the eating is directed by the RA but sanctioned by the Guild, and Eugene is forced to get in a tank with 100 live squirming Chicken Hats!

Seriously though, at times it is a real soap opera. It could have mass appeal as a reality show. :D

I suggest you read the section beginning "Now, for the speedbumps along the route." in the post you refer to. Pay particular attention to the conclusory paragraph:
If anyone has the ability to run an operation such as this, I'd be interested in playing a role. But, there's no way I, or any single individual, could put this on alone... much less, do it as a hobby.

Yeah, I read that belatedly.

But still, he said he would play a role! Now just a few more people. It would be a shame to waste all those good ideas.

New Group, Second Life Television (SLTV)
08-12-2005 16:51
In an effort to self-organize, I've created a group called:
Second Life Television (SLTV)

Please join if you're interested.

If you're extremely interested (willing to contribute significant time/resources), I might make you an officer.

If you're a naysayer (join and complain a lot), I will eject you.

Submission deadline today
08-22-2005 15:56
The submission deadline is today. The SLTV group still needs program directors.

If you have an idea for a show and you're willing to carry a camera for several hours per week, please contact me via IM ingame.

Proposal Away
08-23-2005 09:21
Well, the proposal deadline has come and gone.
I've submitted the proposal for Withnail Studios.

Good luck to all who submitted a proposal.
I'm sure there are lots of great ideas out there.

I'd like to take this opportunity to invite discussion with any other groups submitting proposals. Whoever wins should take advantage of all the talent SL has to offer. I'm sure we can work together.

[sarcasm]
Oh yes, all too simple to run an online television station.
We shouldn't be compensated in any way for running a television station that to run properly is a full time job. Yes, slave labor is definitely a good thing. Yes Ma'am.
[/sarcasm]

For those who think that it's just "push a button and the tv station runs" I'd like to give a little education.

First of all, our needs are much like the needs of any animation production studio.

A list of our needs for making a given show
1. An idea of what the show is
2. Script writers.
3. Texture artists to texture the props and sets.
4. LSL Scripters to script the props
5. Builders who can build the props
5. Sound effects people to mix proper sound effects.
6. Voice actors
7. Editors that can handle various formats of digital video
8. Camera operators who can high framerate recordings of SL. The in-world video recording is NOT suitable, its framerate is choppy even on the best systems.
9. To the end of good quality recording, the most effective solution is to have a second computer with a TV capture card to record everything. The camera operator must have enough technical knowledge to be able to work with unix variants.
10. Inorder to output a stream, any streamer box must be equipped with an internet line that gets at least 768kilobits upstream so that it can both stream out the video to the relay as well as handle SL's own bandwidth. How many of you real world TV people have that running out of your own home? I seriously doubt the station you work at would be at all pleased if you used the company computers, internet lines, not to mention company time to work for the SLBC.

And that's just scratching the surface.

Did I mention that its a full time job to do it properly? We shouldn't be compensated? Who's going to pay our rent? Who's going to pay for our groceries? Internet bills? Electric bill? Brilliant idea, slave labor is.

That is the reason people were saying this project was too ambitious for the compensation level.

That being said, now that you have the contract you should make it pay on your own or fail, not be propped up by Linden Lab. You have a direct feed to the front page of the web site, all the bandwidth and hosting is provided, and you are getting daily content referrals from the Lindens.

If you can't make the project pay on its own after all those crutches and you don't want to do it as a labor of love then you should quit.

Even Public Television in the US isn't funded by the government.

I'd pay to watch a certain outspoken critic of all things "tekkiwikki fic content baron" being tortured live on air...

Maybe some televised public bannings... :p

You know the words... you know I'm thinking them..

But for once I will take the high moral ground.

You know I'm thinking them... I know you know I am.. and that enough for me :)

This much I already know... but if you don't know what I'm saying then chances are it wasn't there you in the first place..

See, here's why Jay Leno sucks:

He explains everything afterwards.

If you get it - its for you... if you don't get it - explaining it won't magically make it for you - you just lose the laugh from the people who did.

Once again I ask: why do you think everything is about you, or for you anyways? You have delusions of adequacy.

Siggy.

How about - does anybody know the answer to my question?

coco

P.S. Siggy, you help MAKE it about me, whether I want it or not. By posting something cryptic after I've asked a question.

By advocating physical violence against my person in Hamlet's blog.

By persisting in including my out-of-context words in your quote, for what, months now? Unable, apparently, to come up with anything else.

And so on and so forth.

So don't tell me I'm making it all about me, when you obviously go out of your way to do it.

I cannot say I am suprised about the failure of SLTV. (No less someone's assertion that everything is about her)

Frankly, the idea that producing 4 hrs of watchable TV a day for free, is ridiculous.

This time it's safe to say " LL, we told you so".
