Oh yeah. That reminds me. Another quick hint. You probably shouldn't cyber on public forums either, whatever your views ;)

Personally, I admit to haing both a male and female avitar. However, I don't really plan on doing anything "funky" with my female avitart at all. The only reason I have a female avitar in additon to my male avitar is that I enjoy trying out new characters, as if in my own private RP.

Well, that, and I am a closet avitar customizer, who once spent 30 minutes trying to decide which clothes were best for his new avitar...

We have had such a range of comments whenever the subject has arisen. It seems to me from the comments we often see that a lot of people equate it exactly to real sex - to the point they can't even differentiate between a real 'sex crime' (on their own moral compass, of course) and ... well, texting. I think it'd be a far more interesting and revealing subject to find out people's views on 'what cybering means to them' and where those uncrossable lines are drawn than endlessly rehashing the "ZOMGZ MEN ARE PLAYING WOMEN!" thing every other week. ;)

Sex, and sexual desire, originates in the brain rather than in the genitals. It is largely mental, and in that respect cybering is no different from regular sex.

Since this topic is constantly being rehashed, I'll just repost what I said in this thread.

"There are a lot of stong feelings on this issue and that was the reason I outed myself in my RL profile. For me playing a female online for the last 6-7 years has been and is still a journey of discovering who I really am and why I've felt so conflicted all my life.

Initially in SL I didnt advertise my RL gender because:
1) I didn't want to be treated different than any other woman (this is a real issue still *sigh* )
2) I was fearful of threats (I had encountered harassment problems in other online games when I outed myself)

I always made it a point that if I was asked my RL gender that I would tell it and I always did, although it was very rarely asked. In addition, any time I was in a relationship that seemed to be getting romantic I would tell the other person. On the other hand, if I met someone who was only looking for casual cybersex and didn't even bother to get to know me first, I figured it didn't matter to them.

I finally outed myself in SL because I now feel secure enough that I won't be harrassed excessively and when I get into a relationship I already know it is someone who can accept me as I am. It really does hurt to be rejected when you tell someone you though you could trust, at least now that shouldn't happen (unless they don't bother to read my profile).

I'd say about 30-50% as that is the ratio of actual females to virtual females in my own aquaintences.

My own conclusion would simply be that if you actually care about gender to the point you'd be disgusted after having text sex with the wrong one, you shouldn't be doing it at all in the first place.

So True! I always approach Sl as "what you see is what you get" and don't inquire past that - but then I'm not trolling Sl for a RL relationship. I figure that the avie a person puts out there is what THEY are happy with the rest of Sl seeing, and to inquire further is bad manners on my part.

Having said that, if someone IS looking for a RL relationship in SL (with all the pitfalls that contains), I can understand why they might be upset.

Get Gender Verified!
12-08-2005 11:31
Ok, so the reason I started this thread and poll, which has gained quite allot of attention, is to see how popular Gender Verification is. Something me and some freinds have been doing for a month or so.

The idea is simple, here is the text from the GV Notecard:

_____

What is Gender Verified?

If you see people who belong to either GV Male or GV Female groups that means that they have been verified as being either male or female in RL.

______
Why GV?

Some people don't care about the RL gender of the AVIs they interact with, others do.

Getting Gender Verified is an opt in option.

Being Gender Verified doesn't, mean that you criticise those who are not GV or those who like to play other genders, in secret or in the open.

If you would like people to know with close to certainty your real life gender, then get Gender Verified.

______
How to get gender verified.

1) If you would like to be GV then you will need to contact a GV member and have skype installed. (free from www.skype.com).
2) You will then have a skype call arranged with someone of your gender who has already been Gender Verified.
3) The GV group member will speak to you long enough to assure that you are the gender you claim. You will then be invited to join either GV Male or GV Female.

Its that simple.

Sure, its not going to be 100% certain, but much closer than any other system, such as “here is a pic of me in my Bikini in Waikiki, the guy I am with is my surf instructor” 

There is no point dissing the GV concept. Its only an option for those who want to be.

Also, its defo not a reason for guys to speak to girls, only girls should speak to girls and guys to guys.

So If you would like to help out, then get GVd and start GVing others. What fun

Mer.

Considering all the Avatar options available in SL, maybe the cry should be "you told me you were really a cat!!" ;)

Wait? So, furries aint really anthropomorphised animal hybrids in RL? Man, I need a detox session. (When I say "man" in that context im not insinuating your a male in RL but rather using it in the "Hey, man, where ya comming from.." as used by Hippies and more recently kids who listen to "rap music";)
