What would YOU replace telehubs with?

I feel the change to P2P would cause a lot less controversy if the lindens came up with a *good* people-attractor to replace the soon-to-be-defunct telehubs. The somewhat nebulous promise of "community centres" really doesn't seem to be making landowners/land traders very happy at the moment. (reasonably so, IMHO!)

So, if YOU were given the job of replacing telehubs with a "something else" to fill the economic gap caused by their loss.... what would YOU do?

For example:

Replace the telehubs with branches of the "Bank of Linden".

They'd work like this: In order to collect your weekly stipend, you have to visit one of these "banks" and click on an ATM. If you don't make this journey, your stipend just accumulates in an otherwise-untouchable "bank account" until such time as you visit a bank to claim it.

Something like this would ensure a steady trickle of people into the ex-hub areas (especially on Tuesdays!) and help avoid a post-P2P economic devaluation of the land (I mean - where better to put your mall than the point where people are issued their weekly stiped?).

What other/better social mechanics could be used to draw people into these "community" areas... any suggestions? There has to be _some_ compromise that would work...

Not a bad idea (the bank), but I imagine that would be met with complaints too.

Nothing.

I would like to see instead llTeleportAgentTo(key agent, vector location) (permissioned similarly to other agent affecting commands) which would take a world-coordinate and use the P2P system to transport an av off to wherever.

This would allow us to build our own transport systems.

Power to the people! :D

I like the idea of gathering places. Maybe a spot with games, or something to do... or some kind of "internet cafe" looking kind of place that would disseminate information about sl, events, places...

I see one big problem with the idea of the bank: Ginko. Even though I don't use it alot of people do and like GOM, LL will phase it out if they offer interest rates. And we all know the kind of outcry we'd get.

I'd open up the telehub spots to make them portable. Then, I'd open them up, auction-style, to the highest bidder. The winners of the telehubs gets to put them on their own land, for a set period (3 months or whatever).

Commercial areas tend to follow one another, so eventually they'd clump together in one spot somewhere on the map. Tada, instant city.

Yeah, if you want to post to the hotline you have to ask your question at one of these gathering spots.

Maybe roadmaps and information about future feature enhancements could be displayed at these telehubs as well.

Maybe ATM row, so all the businesses and what not could put their ATM there. There'd have to be enough room so nobody gets left out though.

Big beacons on the map, so new users gravitate towards them.

it depends on what is around it when all is said and done. Some of these hubs have those giant, huge, enourmous walls of malls around them. You know the ones you crash into when you try and fly up and out of the way because you cant rez fast enough? I wonder if they will still be there? I cant imagine putting something nice down in one of those holes of hell--no elbow room- no breathing room.

i propose LL commission starax, eddie escher, neil protagonist and other prim and texture wizards to build one of a kind sculpturesque builds to draw people to these spots. the hubs can become SL pilgrimage spots to inspire noobies

I like the idea of having "bank of linden" branches. You could have LindeX show up in your "bank account" the same way.

Other natural gathering points exist already and could be used the same way.

Yadni's Junkyard, for example. The Lindens have their own freebie dispensers at some telehubs, but there's no reason these need to be tied to hubs, and they could donate land near banks to people like Yadni for these kinds of public services. It'd be interesting to have commercial stuff and freebies competing like that. I think it'd actually help the commercial stuff sell if it was there to show people looking at freebies what they were missing.

For teleporting? Make a spawn point just another thing you can create (or not create) on your parcel, and let the current landmark system or Jillian's llTeleportAgent() call drop you at the nearest spawn point.

Post Office!

So don't call it a "bank". Call it a "Post Office", and you pick up your "stipend check" or "lindex check" in the "post office box". It'd be consistent if you could pick up mail to firstname.lastname@secondlife.com in a notecard there as well... or stuff that's "dropped" on your profile...

OMGFIC!

Of course, what you really meant to say was that LL should give an open, full and fair opportunity to all residents with complete transparency and that if any of the above were to end up with the job, it would be because they won it fair and square, right? :p

Then don't call it "The Bank of Linden" then, because its basicly a PO Box. PO Box =/= a bank. Why not just call it the Metaverse Postal Service. Hey now.. there's a new job for newbies, postal carriers. Give players the option to rent out a mailbox so their mail can be delivered, but to keep the "Post Offices" active they still have to go to pick up their stipends.

I wouldn't want a new arbitrary reason to be forced into the these areas.

I wonder, if they simply made them very beautiful places, would people hang out there just because they can?

maybe for fairness they could make it open like the german one where applicants submit a proposal, their portfolio, and their price. then LL picks. from that pool of applicants?

but LL could and should solicit people i named! :D

I favor useful and simple telehubs, myself. A "bank" would not appeal to a newer resident the way a nice game of chess or mahjong solitaire (*hint*) might.

Otherwise, throw down a few trees, some chairs, same old freebie Linden content... this stuff...

I'd replace each and every one with a shiny new Terrabucks Coffee stand.

Is lube included, or is that extra? Will the cleaning remove splinters? :D
