The single busiest traffic in SL is through the WA, which has been pithily described as a "wretched hive of scum and villany." Instead of flowing all that traffic through the WA, send it to the telehubs and turn them into "home" for residents who do not own land. When new residents join SL, there first rez in-world is into a random telehub that becomes their "home" and any telehub can be set as a home location.
I like this idea.

I also like mine: sculptures or other attractions that are changed regularly. That doesn't need any more explanation does it?

9) A resident created "What's cool" terminal. Even after being in SL for a while it's difficult, if not more difficult, to find new stuff on some nights.
I like this idea too. :)

Um... isn't that what we already have?
No, what we already have is a small number of widely spaced points under the control of Linden Labs. What I'm proposing is to put this in the control of the landowners who can decide where teleporting can be done, if at all, on their property.

WOW what a lot of great ideas here.

Something I remember... I miss the toilet stalls from Briarcliff Manor. Those was a nice (had a lot of character) lavatory. And it also happened to be the telehub.

I wish we had lots more of those.

WERD 2 FENIKS AND TAYLOR AND ALL THE GREAT BRIARCLIFF HOMIEZ!

I wrote "call it a Post Office"...

Then don't call it "The Bank of Linden" then
Um, I didn't... Shep did. When you objected, I suggested calling it a post office instead. If it's called a post office, it's not called a bank... these are different names... they imply different functions...

Perhaps the community would gather around the former telehub sites if they had streaming videos from online 3D sites such as WoW on display.

Actually I think an "inworld only discount" sex poseball store might work better.

A great idea!

but why would business owners want a bunch of newbies flooding their place? unless your business is to rip newbies off, i mean really. i know for my use a furniture shop i dont think newbie area would be the best alternative. i like the 'post office' idea but then again one day it will be defunct due to complaints, so we need something that has a long term benefit...unfortunatley i dont know what that is. :(

I feel the change to P2P would cause a lot less controversy if the lindens came up with a *good* people-attractor to replace the soon-to-be-defunct telehubs. The somewhat nebulous promise of "community centres" really doesn't seem to be making landowners/land traders very happy at the moment. (reasonably so, IMHO!)

So, if YOU were given the job of replacing telehubs with a "something else" to fill the economic gap caused by their loss.... what would YOU do?

For example:

Replace the telehubs with branches of the "Bank of Linden".

They'd work like this: In order to collect your weekly stipend, you have to visit one of these "banks" and click on an ATM. If you don't make this journey, your stipend just accumulates in an otherwise-untouchable "bank account" until such time as you visit a bank to claim it.

Something like this would ensure a steady trickle of people into the ex-hub areas (especially on Tuesdays!) and help avoid a post-P2P economic devaluation of the land (I mean - where better to put your mall than the point where people are issued their weekly stiped?).

What other/better social mechanics could be used to draw people into these "community" areas... any suggestions? There has to be _some_ compromise that would work...

I would replace them with .... a free air cab service :)

I don't even think that land value would drop that much if telehubs were simply removed. At the moment I rarely see any buildings around telehubs because I don't stick around for everything to rez. The real benefit to being around a telehub is more likely when someone visits a specific shop at a telehub, and spends some time there. This gives them time for all the other shops to rez, which they can then browse if they catch their eye.

So I think all that may be needed is to rename the telehubs to 'commercial centres' (or something better) on the map, and let the mall owners keep making their places nice and attractive so that people will want to visit.

However, if I were given the job of replacing telehubs, I'd be more likely to replace them with one of these:
* a giant statue of myself
* a little stall selling charms and potions that's there one day and gone the next
* the eye of sauron
* a graveyard, from which zombies emerge on a nightly basis
* an accurate recreation of a seventeenth century drinking tavern
* a merry go round

I'm liking a large, black walled building, no windows - and don't tell anyone what's inside. Charge $L5 to go inside and find out. Random super duper goodies for Avs lucky enough to hit the right one at the right time. Instant death for other Avs who are not so lucky. :cool:
