What would YOU replace telehubs with?

The more I think about this the more I think it could work and solve everybody's problems.

The single busiest traffic in SL is through the WA, which has been pithily described as a "wretched hive of scum and villany." Instead of flowing all that traffic through the WA, send it to the telehubs and turn them into "home" for residents who do not own land. When new residents join SL, there first rez in-world is into a random telehub that becomes their "home" and any telehub can be set as a home location.

This lower floor of the telehub would equipped with the normal WA kiosks as well as an additional kiosk for "Learn to Build" which dispenses a notecard with landmarks to the Ivory Tower and the sandboxes. The second floor has some seating and the games tables so there is a place to hang out and socialize. Every telehub (other than estate sims) would be set up like this.

This keeps the value of the land surrounding the telehubs and allows p2p for everyone. The people that hate telehubs and wouldn't shop at one if their lives depended upon it, never have to see another telehub ever again. Those that like them still have access to them and businesses still have reason to congregate in zones.

Is lube included, or is that extra? Will the cleaning remove splinters? :D

Splinters? What have you been up to, Travis?

I would prefer they charge a small fee - say $10 - for point-to-point as a dandy little money sink, and keep all the telehubs exactly where they are for thrifty people to use.

That would help keep them alive for the people owning land around them, too.

I would totally support this.

Here are my thoughts after some brief brainstorming, and realizing that telehubs should be replaced with numerous different things to keep them fresh and worth visiting.

1) Games

2) Town Hall Repeaters

3) SL Machinima viewing station (SLTV, maybe?)

4) Streaming video stations for live (and archived) events like SLCC and other conferences

5) Spots for Public Policy discussion, i.e. distributed Democracy Island

6) Business/Group conference rooms with slide show and transcript saving functions

7) Little sections of the preview grid. I doubt this is possible but imagine a place where you could try out all of your stuff on the preview grid without downloading a new client.

8) Public art, i.e. Burning Life

9) A resident created "What's cool" terminal. Even after being in SL for a while it's difficult, if not more difficult, to find new stuff on some nights.

And if you really want high traffic

10) In world forum viewer (we can sick Electric Sheep on that one)

11) Alternative discussion system to the forums to bring all these discussions exlusively in world.

I'd replace them with soapboxes.

Then I could avoid the hubs and the crybabies all at once.

Chuck Norris

This makes no sense. You want Chuck Norris at every telehub? What, like a holographic projection? Clones?

I agree with the idea of putting Chuck at ONE of the telehub sites, but it would devalue the man to have him at all of them. Maybe have a different B list celebrity has-been at each hub?

maybe for fairness they could make it open like the german one where applicants submit a proposal, their portfolio, and their price. then LL picks. from that pool of applicants?

but LL could and should solicit people i named! :D

That is basically how they are doing the contest (for lack of a better word) for two education builds now, as announced in Announcements. This is a fair way to do it.

Well Chuck can be at many places at once or he can be no where at all. This is the nature of Chuck. And remeber what happens if you question Chuck. Never call Chuck B list. He will roundhose kick you into the sun!

So, if YOU were given the job of replacing telehubs with a "something else" to fill the economic gap caused by their loss.... what would YOU do?

It is our job.. the job of those people who own land around hubs.

I think that Linden Lab should license the rides from the former Spittoonie Island and place one at each telehub location. Either that, or refer to my giant griffon station suggestion in Hiro's thread.

Santa's true story began when he tried to copy Chucks good looks. Chuck confronted him and Santas beard and hair immediately tured gray. Chuck banished Santa to the North Pole where he slaves for Chuck making toys n stuff for children. Chuck lets Santa come out once a year to deliver the gifts. Since Chuck is real busy.

I started building a telehub when I was new, by copying the co ords, and taking snapshots of the textures.. it was so bad, but people reconised it, lol..

The bidding plan you described is okay, too, Jauani. Just as fair.

I think the telehubs should be replaced with a big, swirling vortexes connected to other worlds.

Anyone going through the vortex will be randomly tossed into Star Wars Galaxies, Activeworlds, Lineage2... you get the idea.

Well, every one of those worlds, except Myst online.

That would just trap you in a book forever, and people could open that book in SL to talk to you from time to time.

Anytime the number of people throwing themselves through the vortex exceeds the number of those streaming into SL, there will be an impromptu holiday.

That holiday will be called the Day of Introspection.

Everyone dresses up in a toga and crown of flowers, and asks themselves what went wrong until the portals start flowing in the proper direction again.

Explora-Hubs !!
11-23-2005 17:18
I feel that the idea that people dont get/want to explore enough in SL is still valid.

And to some extent the telehubs _forced_ some exploration. Although I admit I usually just fly as high as I can and make a bee line for that red beacon.

I still think the Lindens could take the sim map...and the surround sim maps...and make them a point an click explore thing....with Hints popping up ...and a click-on to TP to that spot.

Those that build..and create...and sell...could highlight their things on the map...and let people explore...

I love to take very SLOW hot air balloon rides...and just look at things...maybe these could be Balloon Stations...that rezz a balloon and let you just float around that area?

Exploring...and SEEING all the wild and wacky things peeps do here is fun. Anything that promoted//supported that...would make a nice old telehub into an

ExploraHub...!! :)
