From: Cienna Samiam Well, Flip, it's like this... some of us actually work for a living instead of sucking away mommy and daddy's retirement funding to sit at college and game on their connection instead of working on that term paper. I'm sure when you grow up and get out in the real world, you'll understand these things. Cienna, I often think there is alot of sense in some of the things you say, but I have to tell you that I am very disappointed with your above statements. To add my $0.02, Flip and Jenn are great, hard working people who I have had the pleasure to know in RL. They both bust ass in SL... especially when it comes to helping out new people. They also bust ass in RL. Flip has already given his RL resume, Jenn's is equally impressive. I personally owe them a debt of gratitude for the help they gave me when I moved to Philly from Belize. Not many people would risk inviting an online friend to come and stay with them.

Personally I find the 14 day suspension for a global attack far too lenient; 16 days, though, would be far too harsh. 15.63982 +/-.00002days would be just perfect. The avatar Plastic Duck was said to have been banned permanently, yet there is a new avatar said to be operated by the same person. If this is true, does permabanning and even taking legal action against global attackers give those who lose money as a result of grid shutdowns any hope of change for the better?

From: Jeska Linden To clarify, the Police Blotter reports a 14-day suspension as part of our disciplinary process, it does not currently report bannings, that is something we plan to add in the future, along with the results of the Resident Review panel that is automatically triggered when someone recieves a 14 days suspension. Further, while some Residents who recieve a 14-day suspension do survive the automatic review for ban that accompanies it, those who commit grid-wide (global) attacks do not. Again, to be absoulately clear, those who commit global attacks do NOT get this same process, there is no Review panel, and they are normally automatically banned, per our Community Standards/TOS. Also, as posted here, our legal team is also investigating other methods of enforcement. What exactly is a resident review panel? Is that something Linden Lab has where they review residents, or does it mean there is actually a committee of residents who review infractions and mete out a recommendation? Thank you for taking the time to post this. I really do think it would do you much good to have something like this under 'announcements' for instances where people have been really very put upon as a result of such attacks. My $0.02 worth.

SL Guild for Class Action Capability
12-14-2005 15:16
One poster said that an individual had to prove he or she lost $5,000 in order to take action in a class action lawsuit, but I wonder if that equates one legal entity. If there were a guild (say Jennyfur and Flipper together might be JenFlip Inc.?) or a corporate entity, wouldn't that count? I am thinking this might be of use in future, should these grid attacks continue. How many people would you have to group with before you had lost $5000 in, say, 3-5 hours of downtime? From: FlipperPA Peregrine It better be. If this is all, this is extremely pathetic.
Every time one of these bullshit attacks happen, it costs me HOURS of time to recover, not to mention the business is costs me. I'm just one of many - it costs US a hell of a lot more time and effort than LL. It pisses me off when we seem to care more about the stability of their product than they do. I'm one of LL's biggest supporters, but am really peeved that they still haven't done anything even as these grid-wide attacks continue to grow more and more frequent.
I'm going to continue to be peeved until we hear something about them actually doing something to dissuade these useless pieces of flesh from wasting a lot of my - and other citizen's - time. Time that is now increasing valuable as P2P without privacy controls makes getting any meaningful work done nearly impossible.
Regards,
-Flip

If you measure my time at the rate my RL company bills me out at, we would have long since surpassed $5000.00. Another night, another grid crash. I saw Robin's post in the other thread about gathering info on the perps, but how about a little more detail and a public announcement. Something tells me the kids doing these now-weekly crash events don't read through the forums in detail on a regular basis. Regards, -Flip

From: Jeska Linden --- Also, as posted here, our legal team is also investigating other methods of enforcement. And while the LL "legal team" investigates, and no enforcement action is taken to protect inWorld residents, investments and stake holders - LL continues to show an unwillingness to effectively deal with security..Thus risking a crisis in confidence.

A resident review panel appears to be what's going on when you receive an eMail from LL telling you the bare anonymous details of some transgressor and asking you to vote yay or nay to banning them. The issue I have with it is that in my opinion you aren't given sufficient information to make an informed decision due to LL's mania for preserving anonymity. I every case where I have been requested to vote I have voted YES, because: 1) Bearing in mind LL's 'relaxed' attitude to real troublemakers they must have REALLY done something naughty to stir LL to action! 2) Who cares anyway? If they really want back in they will be able to. Well, I could, within an hour, no problem...

I lurk pretty heavily on these forums and see the kinds of things people do to one another and the last thing I would want is any of these people making the call if I ever got in trouble. Edit to add -- Apparently, it isn't 'really bad people' who get reviewed. Apparently, every time someone is suspended, they get reviewed for a ban, or so says the Linden that posted earlier in this thread: From: someone Further, while some Residents who recieve a 14-day suspension do survive the automatic review for ban that accompanies it, those who commit grid-wide (global) attacks do not.

Bear in mind you don't get to know who the person you are judging is. You only get the sketchiest outline of what they have done, no 'pros and cons', no background. So how are you meant to make an informed choice when you have no information other than 'they did "x"? ANSWER: You can't. The entire exercise is futile, it's just a pantomime carried out to spare Phil's liberal tendencies from contact with reality. Now if *I* were in charge it'd all be settled in a highly public show trial that would shame Joe Stalin and his boys... Bear in mind also just how naughty you have to be to get LL wound up enough to put you on the block!

I would be very sad to find out they got permanently banned for losing temper here, while this hosehead who attacked the grid gets due process and the whole ball of wax. Just doesn't seem right. And yes, the more I read, the more it looks like Linden Lab does a lot of things that are futile. I think I am going to just forget I ever heard about this game. There's just too much drama for me, and I don't like that the company isn't responsible enough. Thanks for the reply.

Just don't raise Jeska's ire in the forums, and be half sensible inworld, you'll have no problems. I mean, I haven't got banned, or even cautioned, yet, and I've been here a while. If I haven't managed to get into trouble yet, I doubt you will either!

Well, Philip Linden did come to the Winter Expo bonfire event yesterday (Wednesday, 12/14) and say that all global grid attacks would be handed over to the FBI. Of course that was right before he was hit with a C4 bomb that blew everyone out of the sim... But it does annoy me, reading the Announcements, that the latest grid attack was from a repeat offender. So I'm still confused as well, did this repeat offender finally convince LL to take a firm stance, or is the fact that the latest attack was from a repeat offender just proof that LL is still just playing lip service to "dire consequences"?

From: Chosen Few Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Cienna, if you only knew Flip personally, you'd realize what a total idiot you sound like. I realize you're probably not an idiot and that you don't know him, but still, as someone who does, I can't help but laugh hysterically at the lunacy of that comment.
I'll leave it up to Flip what he does and does not want to share about his personal life, so without going into detail, I'll just say this. He's one of the hardest working, most intelligent, most driven, and most balanced people I know. He's accomplished more and built a better life for himself at his age than almost anyone I've ever met. If you only knew. Guess you don't know alot of people do you?

Just curious, but this "very good friend" would happen to be you would it? I'm curious how you've just recently started posting (all of 6 posts), just joined within the past few weeks, and already have a very good friend? Its suspicious is all I'm sayin'! Quite suspicious. I guess I'm just bothered by the idea that getting suspended from the forums for something is considered as bad as blowing up the game. I have like, four friends that I really enjoy in SL and you're basically telling me one of them is looking at a ban for something that didn't even happen in the game. Just seems kind of over the top.

I'm sorry if that was still confusing, the Community Standards cover all community spaces of Second Life - from inworld to email IMs, in-world movement, and forum/website behavior. It's all connected. Typically, no one event can trigger an automatic review for ban; but grid-wide attacks are one of the very few that can. I think we can all agree that this is not over the top.

Er, that isn't what I said. I said someone getting a 14 day suspension from the forums is not the same as blowing up the grid and that treating them the same (ban) is the thing that is 'over the top'.
