Age verification never seemed to be a priority for LL anyway. I know someone who signed up to SL with an expired American Express gift card. She made up a name, a fake phone number and got in. Fortunately she's an adult who only wanted to make a free alt account without using her real credit card so they wouldn't charge her the 10 bucks. But any 12 year old who gets a gift card for his birthday could do the same thing and likely has.

Actually, I don't see doom necessarily. I'm saying I have friends who would love to be in SL but can't because their systems and/or network can't handle it. It needs to be accessible and scalable in order for SL to become the Google of Virtual Worlds. Not everyone can afford a high end system, and in very rural areas the cost of DSL can be prohibitive ($100 a month where I'm from), which leaves out a major portion of the population worldwide. A free account does nothing for those who don't have the system and access to run it.

High-End System? Pffft... you can get by on a cheap Dell in SL. Just meet system requirements. Folks gotta realize- Technology moves forward. Move with it or be left behind or out. I have an old Commodore 64 that I wish they'd still make stuff for, but it's considered Outdated technology.

My fiance ran SL, 1.10 included, on an AMD Duron with 512 MB RAM and a GeForce 4. Sure, she had to turn down the settings, but it worked. I have other friends who can't use SL due to having an old video card (Geforce 2 era) or Intel Graphics chipset. All they can do is wait till they can upgrade.

In probably another year I'll ditch the AGP motherboard & video card & go with PCI-Express.

But I do agree with the Broadband part. It's gonna take a few years for some areas to catch up.

would have been nice if they'd waited till they actually had some effective mainland land tools, ooh well, there goes the neighborhood :P

Shoot, I run mine with an NVidia GeForce 3, and 512 mb ram. I don't run SL WELL on this, but I do run it.

I assume the TOS will be changed soon to allow griefing... i know the lindens dont wish to get a billion more Abuse Reports in their inboxes each day then they already have...

I guess it's i should assume SL will now become another Furcadia? (nothing to do with us furries, just the general population of Furc is a mix of mostly minors with adults). So yea... :/

As if we didnt have enough problems with lack of Grief Security, and Personal Privacy, now it will get worse then we ever imagined. From now on i shoot back! :( After all i can always make a new account! >.>

Should make for some interesting growth, in any case.

Yeah... growth... like a fungus.

I've tried looking at this from every point of view (including taking glasses off and staring blankly at the screen.) I can't find a single good reason why they think this will help the game. Sure it will get the numbers up... the numbers of inactive/banned/unused accounts, that is. They took away the stipends for newer accounts and they took away the 250L bonus (which was the only SMART thing about this, if they are going to give us unlimited alts), which means... Did they just shoot themselves completely in the foot or is this just a grazing blow?

If they want to get their numbers up, they really should squash bugs and give us more control in our little worlds. I'd love to have my parcel set so that it doesn't rezz my neighbor's trees, which come over onto my property and interfer with my being able to use my vendors if placed on that wall, for example. Now, they give me even more reason to wish I could block it out! This is dooooooommmm!!!

(I was trying to fill all the requirements for a post ;) I think I missed one, but can't recall which.)

As far as I can tell:

- There is no time expiration on the new free accounts. They are NOT a '7 day free trial'.
- There is no payment requirement.
- There is no valid age verification.
- There is no limit to the number of accounts you can create.

The only limit, as far as I can see, is the Player's creativity in coming up with new names and valid e-mail addresses. And weather or not the person is willing to lie about who they are.

- There is no stipend or starting allowance. So what can they do, without a credit card to buy Lindens? We all know what sort of 'unskilled labor' is most prevalant in SL. :(

Ban the person from both grids for life, for lying about their name or age? Based on what ID? The 20 false ones they gave you in the last week? They will just create a new name and e-mail combination, and be back within the hour.

Why oh why do people want a pile of alts? Even managing a few for legitimate purposes is more than a pawful for me. And yes, I do feel it's a bad idea for LL to have ever dropped the US$9.95 entry ticket. If nothing else the entry ticket made people value their membership. I know premium accounts are unfashionable, but I was prepared to pay a full years' subscription when I joined and continue to renew it on an annual basis. Why? Because I value what I've found in SL. The wonderful people I've met and the jaw-dropping works of creativity that I find have made it one of the best investments I have ever made.

Total unrestricted access may dilute some of the positive aspects of SL and I can only hope that some of the new arrivals will be 'turned on' and become great contributors to this amazing virtual world.

Give me a break, the only people who will be banned will be the paying residents who have the gall to actually shoot back at the griefers after having AR upon AR ignored by Linden.

Oh look, LL has made another minor change to the game.

Anyone else think we're about to be ass-deep in histrionics?

;)

Hey newbies, welcome to SL! The game is doomed. It's been so since before I started playing, and becomes more blatantly obviously so every day. Come enjoy the ongoing end of the world!

Oh, and buy my stuff, your Lindens are about to become worthless anyhow so don't fret about spending them... make sure you buy one of everything for each of your many alts, too. :D

Yeah except before we could at least pretend that the main grid was (mostly) 18+. Now there's literally no impediment for, I dunno, your fifth grade neice from rolling into the BDSM club. Hooray for lawsuits!

It's hard(er) for an 11 year old in the US to get a credit card. Now it's trivial.

Birthdate? 1/1/1980, of course. Why yes, I'm over 18, how'd you know. Why yes, I'll just use this new Gmail account to sign up. Why yes, I DID refer myself to Gmail with my old account, how did you know? I can apparently do that 100 times a day! Who knew.

Bah. This is going to be a fuckall festivus of griefing.

I remember, waaaay back in 2003, when LL tried this last time, removing the credit card requirement. Result? The world was pretty much on fire and in anarchy for about a week, until they turned it back off.

At least now we can pay $200 for a private island, eh?

Hmmm... Grab a dictionary file of baby names, download and install some software to record a web browser macro, then proceed to use up the top 100-200 first names for each available last name. Not a far fetched account DoS attack.

Should have stopped pretending when free accounts were made. I'm aware of any $10 charge made with my card. No charge at all? I've no idea. Same timeframe that cell phone #'s were deemed acceptable so I'm guessing that's when LL stopped pretending that they were making any attempt to screen, too.

Consequently, I'm not surprised that on multiple occasions I've witnessed a quick exit made by individuals who announce that they have to go because dinner is ready.

The NAMES people!
06-09-2006 03:18
I tried the new form out and when I saw the names that are available at the moment, I just HAD to follow through. I really really really wanted Scum Lumpen, but my browser went haywire and had to restart -> "name is taken", NUTS. But equally cool, I ended up with Snow Cone!!!!!oneoneone11
I wanted an alt anyhow to separate out some inventory stuff and do a bit of reshuffling.
I did however find out that it was a 7 day trial for me. Dunno if it used my IP to check if I had another account. I used my other email address to separate out the offline IMs, so it shouldn't have been that. I'm not bothered though, I just payed my $9.95 straight off. I mean Snow Cone?!?!?!

Too cool.

Great Gorean Auction!

Wow, I'm....speechless. I would've put this in the show I recorded yesterday, but the thread was submerged, and I didn't see it.

Linden Lab - you doing this for a reason? Somebody wants to see a 'n' subscriber base? (non-paying, I guess...)

Time to setup platforms at 760m and wait it out, as the world roils in chaos below.....keep your object return down to 1 minute, and deactivate outside scripts, I guess.

I'll be hiding in my skyscraper.
