Alts don't worry me - griefers do - and underage griefers even more so...

So, now the name of the game is 'absolutely ANYTHING to get those numbers up'?

I think we need to settle on a yardstick here; who's ass were you referring to?

The answer is a simple one. Make $Lindens no-trans! :)

Oh . . . my . . . God.

Yes, I think we are about to be overrun by alts, teenagers, grade schoolers, porcupines, you name it.

Hmm, maybe yes to alts, but the big problems are still there:

1) SL is not accessible to a lot of people whose systems can't handle it
2) scalability

makes me wonder then, WHY?

This is an interesting although not unexpected move on LL's part. It probably stems from feedback they've gotten from people who complain about a free service that requires a credit card or phone number.

In LL's defense, of the four people I've tried to get on SL, three of them all balked at the idea of giving out their credit card to sign up for what is supposed to be free. I've also read news articles and listened to podcasters who've made the same complaint. It's clearly an issue affecting SL's adoption.

One could even argue that this is a step in the right direction towards making SL more like the web in general; something that SL is increasingly compaired to. Then again, the web doesn't have a single entity controlling access and/or setting age limits.

posting guidelines (any topic):

1) predict doom. Whatever the topic, doom is always in fashion. Doom is the new black.

2) question Linden Lab's motivations. It makes you look all jaded and cynical. The seen-it-all wiseman pose is a massive turn-on for chicks. It's the next best thing to a leather jacket and a sweet ride.

3) if possible, tie the topic into one of your pet peeves. Oftentimes this can be linked to 1) doom and 2) cynicism for added effectiveness.

4) mention something about how this was never going to work anyway, because it neglects the REAL PROBLEMS. An easy segue back into doom.

LOL Frighteningly accurate!

I don't really worry about being loaded with alts, since how many can anyone have online simultaneously? Very few folks can do the multiple log in dealie anyhow, so pfft, in my mind.

Multiple alts ='s multiple customers, speaking as a merchant. They might consider purchasing Lindens to dress their alts up in a snazzy suit, or renting a home, etc. Those are good for the economy, make for more fun all around.

If a secondary avie allows someone to express another aspect of their personality, then have at it! Or maybe escape a stalker/ex/ton of IM's every second? I don't see a serious downside to this.

Althought the number of registered avies has gone upwards of 250,000, which is more than 10 times the total when I started hanging out here seriously over 2 years ago, the number of folks in-world simultaneously has only tripled. So yes, there are a lot of alts, there are also probably a lotta folks that sign up, come in and don't get hooked (I didn't my first few times, was nearly 4 months later that I came to stay).

Second Life is a self-selecting process in action, to my mind. Folks that find the open-ended, DIY world fun and entertaining stay, those that don't leave and now that it's free to try out, the possibility of finding more like-minded folks has just increased. More creative, clever, innovative residents, how cool is that?

I say, have at it!

haha! What a succinct and perfect summation! I think I've managed at least three out of four.

Do porcupines qualify as "furries"? Or do we need a new category, "prickly"?

LL is probably thinking there will be a big influx of residents coming in without the $250L start-up funds who will have to purchase Lindens to get themselves started.

That may occur, of course, but I think it's a bit naive to think that will be the majority. New accounts will now be completely disposable, with nothing stopping those inclined from bringing in throw-away accounts to do things they wouldn't want to waste one of their real accounts on. Like selling freebies, griefing, scamming... the usual.

And Luciftias, you forgot one...

Harris Hare has it right I think. I have had the same issues getting people to try SL. If it is free, why do I have to put in my credit card? People are hesitant to give that information out just on a whim of trying a game out. I think it is the right step in increasing the population base.

Is it significant that this is happening on 6/6/06? Has Armageddon finally come?

zOMG, imagine all the new furries running around. Heck, people can use separate alts for separate fur AVs now. AND there's a HUGE fur convention coming up where SL will no doubt will be heavilly promoted. zOMG OMG OMG :p

I agree ... many old friends IRL are using ”to old” comps to have a chance to have a serious look into SL..

Make a version - that dont give al but show a lot. ...a low performance software or... what so ever..

That's what I thought at first, too - that all these people might just buy Lindens and buy our things - but, if they aren't required to put in their credit card to sign up (has anyone determined that yet?), then how likely are they going to be to buy Lindens, which requires going to the web site, at least, and put in a credit card?

So that might not be much of an advantage. Maybe the only advantage is getting those numbers on the front page up.
