Torley, that's just silly. I'll give you money, for god's sake. Are you still on a basic account?
How much do you need?

Ooh I need 5k, if you give me 5k, I promise I won't go chair camping, LOL!

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?
Yes, it's true, I have a blog now!

Camping chairs entice people to gather and form little communities around making money. They also grant vendors a captive audience for advertising products. They perform the same functions as telehubs but are placeable anywhere the owner wants to put them.

You can't support telehubs and hate camping chairs.

I chose "I could care less"

It's kind of a sleezy dwell tactic, but it gets broke people money and if they want to sit in a place for hours just to make a few measly L$'s than all the power to you.

Yeah, what she said x 2

land barrons get dev incentives. must be the pretty signs they put up.

I remember a conversation about this a while back. You're talking about Anshe Chung?

From what I remember, Anshe also owns other types of commerce sites in SL, and much of her dwell comes from that. If I recall, she has a rather large shopping mall empire, much like Westfield. :-)

You don't get a dwell payment unless an av stays on your land for 5 minutes, so it can't just be from all the land she has for sale.

Since there wasn't an option for "I couldn't care less" I chose "I could care less." I suppose I could care a little less than I actually do, but I would be hard pressed to figure out how.

You would have done that by not posting at all. ;)
Or better yet, by not participating in the poll. :p

Be sure, if you are flying around to money trees, to check off "mature" in your find window.

You will get a lot more trees that way. Also a lot more disturbing places, but that's how it goes.

Been a long time since I harvested money trees, but morning U.S.A time seems when the pickin's best. Unfortunately, I mainly got on at night.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring this up.

I remember about a year here in the forums it was thought to be an unsavory practice to have people sitting at your place driving up the dwell. Many AVs sat on a wall and got paid by the money ball. Then the debate would ensue over the motivation of the club owners allowing this to happen and getting on the top 10 list.

Many months after that came the free money trees-- of course they were coded for all the new players, but it was an acceptable practice and if it helped you to get dwell, well that was OK too. Eventually some had coded the trees so anyone could get money and only a slight discussion was brought up about that.

Now a year later, here we actually have money chairs that are ten steps ahead of the old money ball and sit on wall trick. Apparentlys it is becoming quite acceptable and popular. I have explored just about all the places on the top 20 list investigating for vendor spaces and I would guess that half of them made it to the list-soley on the money chair.

And your pole tells it all-most dont care. Funny how if yout stick around long enough--opinions change.

It's kind of funny actually...
I have 2 types of chairs at my establishment (SLitch Nilsson's Rock N' Roll Arcade Heaven). One type of Chair, The Lazy Linden Chair, will pay you 3L$ every ten minutes and the other pays 2L$ every five minutes. Both are clearly marked, and yet so many people still choose the 3L$ every ten minutes!

But anyways, (please pardon me for the shameless plug) we Have a Money Tree and a Money Orb that gives out 10L$ every 10 minutes, and Free Play Slot machines that can award as much as 2500L$ in one play....All for Free ! ! !

In addition, like the previous posts suggest, an atmosphere is created where a "pow-wow around the campfire feeling" is created. Thoughts and ideas are shared, friendships and and signifigant relationships are formed. People will camp out, study their Wiki, dance(yes you can dance while seated), organize their inventory, shop on SLexchange, or just catch their breath for a few minutes....a profitable few minutes!

Sleezy?, perhaps....Effective?, absolutely!

SLitch Nilsson's Rock N' Roll Arcade Heaven has gone from zero traffic to The Most Popular Places list in just 3 weeks!

The Chairs and their creators: Aaron Levy and Alex Edo deserve alot of the credit...but I can't leave out my Amazingly Awesome staff:

I stumbled upon this "phenomenon" while randomly jumping private islands.

I found this on the top-rated property in the game. In 3 other corners of the sim, there were Slingo games playing, but this...

this just makes me mad.

Such a waste of bandwidth, time, and energy for a few cents an hour.

Sometimes I hate SL.

edit: perhaps to clarify. I wouldn't have cared if there were socializing going on, but the only words heard were requests for the people standing to "move so i can see the movie". Hi hello, welcome to camera controls. ARGH

That picture gave me an idea:

Next time I come across a camping chair, I'll don saffron robes and a begging bowl. ;)

I have a friend who gets mad at online games themselves. She says they are a "waste of bandwidth." She says that about some other things, too. Thing is, though, I don't think bandwidth is a scarce commodity really; I could be wrong.

Just as you can never be too rich, you can never have too much bandwidth. It is why internet connections keep getting faster and faster.I suppose there will theoretically reach a point where they will be maxed out, but as more and more stuff is being delivered over broadband connections (television, video on demand, phone service), bandwidth is very precious indeed, and very much a commodity. Broadband is a luxury one at that.. The phrase "a waste of bandwidth" doesn't really point to a scarcity of bandwidth, any more so than the phrase "a waste of skin" refers to the scarceness of skin.

Aye. It's tantamount to saying "That book's a waste of paper."

It speaks more to the individual's dislike of the book than the scarcity of paper :)

I don't think there's anything wrong in the least with camping chairs, but other than the challenge of clawing your way up from nothing... for the love of all that's holy, skip eating out one day and spend five bucks on LindeX or something, y'know?

That said, if there's a chair, and I'm there doing something else anyway, sure. Hey, I can work on scripts as easy in a camping chair as I can anywhere else. :D

Well, there's some folks out there, like me, I am sure, who can participate in SL only as long as it is free. I'm a 24/7 Mom and I am homeschooling. Finances are tight. My husband would flip out if I wanted to spend RL money to have some "play money." Nope, nah-uh, that wouldn't fly here.

So. Finding various and alternate means of making enough to pay some rent and buy some new shoes.... yes, I am interested. Thank you. :)

There are worse things than camping chairs.

It does cycle money back into the hands of new users - which really, is not a bad thing, is it?

As Torely said, it does bring people together. Perhaps the camping chairs could be arranged more for conversation?

Hopefully LL has found a way for it not to cut down on their bandwidth / resource consumption, though. If you're not moving everyone should theoretically cache, right? right?

And I didn't say a thing against that, you'll note. Merely, even as a "24/7 homeschooling mom" I'd think there are ways to make currency than getting a fraction of a cent every few minutes on a camping chair.... outside-of-SL currency.

That said, all of SL is a luxury and I can certainly understand money being tight. I'm just not seeing a real point in making these chairs a primary source of income... although, I suppose, you could set your avvy AFK on one overnight, using one of several means to keep from triggering an automatic logout...

I'm all for anything that allows people to earn a few linden. My only concern with money chairs is that they pretty much render the "most popular" list and the purpose of dwell pretty much useless.

I mean, is the top place on the "most popular list" really the "most popular" if what made it the "most popular" was a group of "afk" avatars sitting on money chairs?

And, wasn't the purpose of dwell incentives to reward those people who were creative and sociable enough to actually draw people to their locations by virtue of their ability to organize and host fun events?

It's just sad to go to these most popular places and see all of these "afk" avatars.

and I wonder what impression newbies get when they visit these "most popular" places in search of fun, and instead what they find is a crowd of lifeless avatars.

Doesn't make for a great first impression, does it? :(

100L for a night is nothing! would that even cover the electricity used in your home?
