So... you're saying for all the time spent creating, texturing, modeling your own or spending hundreds of dollars in purchasing those creations of others that there is no guarantee of a quality backup or plans in the works to be able to restore anything in the inventory?
Let me guess... The copyrighted answer of the Linden's was... "Well, we're still new at this, and we're really sorry. We'll try to do better next time."
The only thing they left off their words was the catch-phrase of "Suckah."
If you can't store things in your inventory -- where the hell are you to put them?
If there are no guarantees for this "game" - then why invest all that money and sweat in trying to create content?
Lindens -- at least have the decency to admit that there was a bug and compensate him for half of the lost items.
Then again, lemme guess, this hasn't happened before and "you're still new at this."

From: Schwanson Schlegel If you value any objects in your inventory - GIVE COPIES TO A FRIEND.
I lost ~75% of my objects in inventory. I estimate I paid well over $350,000L for everything that was lost. LL can not and will not compensate you for lost inventory.
BACK UP YOUR VALUED POSSESSIONS. This idea would be viable if it were possible to give no transfer items to another avatar just to "hold" for you - but they would not work for the other person. Unfortunately, without a bug-exploit, this is currently not possible and therefore not a viable option.

From: Anakin Skye Maybe we should just start our own SL. i know programmers here that are way over the lindens. Have you ever asked a scripting question to a Linden and they are like: Awww sorry im just a pretty face and donnu cr#p As I was reading this thread, I was thinking the same thing I've only been on SL a few days but love it's potential. It's too bad to hear how the company is screwing that up.

The company isn't screwing it up, Nayla. This thread is a result of putting a group of tekkies all in one same little spot. I'd call it Apocalypse from within.

I haven't been here long enough to see it myself, but if it's really as bad with the billing, thn it is the company. Plus, the fact is, this is obviously a beta system. I agree that the costs are way to high considering the fact that it is. Maybe I just see it differently, being a techie and all (tekkie looks too much like trekkie). The system shows INCREDIBLE potential, but not only does the company need to fix bugs but need to add a lot of features to make it fully live up to the potential of the metaverse (which it seems to want to be). Maybe they don't have enough programmers on staff.

If I think it needs some features added NOW, why would I have wanted to be around in beta? What kind of logic is that to say that just 'cause something isn't as craptastic as it once was that it's blasphemy to say it still has room for improvement? And from the way I see it, it's still in beta, just a better version.

From: Mac Beach Maybe in the long run there will be three grids: the new grid for children, where parents can with relative safety park their kids while they go off and do other things, (2) the Adult grid where anything goes, and (3) the grid in-between where people of all ages can come and interact, conduct business, chat, educate, and essentially, behave by doing things we do during our normal lives (as we would, let's say in a mall rather than in a strip-club).
The problem with this idea is people themselves. People as a whole only act properly when under threat. The reason people act civilized in the mall is because if they do't they will either get beaten up, arrested, or arrested then beaten. There's none of that in a virtual world. There are almost 0 consequences for anything in a virtual world if you don't care about it. That's where griefers come from. They don't care about the world or their characters so if the get banned, no big deal. And in such anonymity as the net has, a ban doesn't necessarily keep the user out. They just get another account with another name and email address. Of course I don't mean all people, but even if 1% of people (and I'd say it's probably closer to 5%) are those types of neanderthals, it screws it up for everyone else.

Mild Mannered Man... sorta...
01-25-2005 09:39
Schwan,
Until now you've been so mild mannered about this, especially considering the situation. Okay, losing "sheep" "penis" and all the other stuff really got to you, but still, I know you kept faith that LL would do what was right: fix their problems and return your missing inventory. Even when I lost everything I had at the Punany Club when the sim was cleared, You were the voice of reason that kept me from being so pissed off that the megs of "nasty grams" to LL never got sent. You were the one who told me to be patient, be nice, and keep a positive outlook. You managed to do all this for me even after what they've put you through. {{GREAT BIG HUG}}
See, I mistakenly thought if I were a little fish in the big pond and kept hiding in the shallows, they'd never mess with me. I keep an amazingly organized inventory cause I HATE losing stuff and can normally find anything in a couple of clicks.
LL - I'm really tired of being told the missing items don't exist in my inventory. Excuse me, but that's why I sent the bug reports. *THAT* is the issue! I've been asked several times exactly what is missing -I answered as best I could since everything was rezzed in the suite- and been told no such items exist in my inventory several times.
I'm glad I don't have property, and until the grid and server stability issues are corrected, I won't be a land owner.

I wonder if items missing from person A's inventory ever show up in Person B's inventory?

Isn't it nice to know that none of items are true anymore. Or is it that all of them are?

I see a lot of talk in the forums about how we need a bunch of "free speech rights" different that what we have now to keep the Linden government from shutting us down if we say something bad about them. How come a thread like this gets to last so long if the Linden government is so oppressive?

I don't recall ever seeing any evidence of posts being deleted or altered because they said bad things about the Linden staff or the program's flaws. Of course, if a good enough job was done, I don't guess I would necessarily get to see it unless I happened on it before the posts were removed or doctored.
I think the real call for more "freedom of speech" is from people who want to engage in personal attacks, use foul language and talk dirty. Mostly the personal attacks.

The primary reason I haven't bothered to do more than shop in SL is because I'm not willing to play russian roulette SL style with whatever I invest time and effort and money to create.
Suffice to say that until LL gets on the ball with data security and availability (number 1 and 2 of a longer list), I'm basic.
Sorry to hear about your trouble, Schwan. But I can't say it surprises.

11. The Lindens have gone batshit insane and are trying to destroy Second Life before the residents can do it for them?

From: Hiro Pendragon necroposting 2 months later for no good reason. - this is the fourth instance so far by the same person ... Well excuse me for reading older threads than you! I like to contrast some of the previous discussions with newer ones. Was there a rule that you can misinterpret and then harp on at me about breaking? No? So you're just whining that I don't read the forums the same way as you? Ok.
