First, the wide open spaces that you're free to explore...there are plenty of those. What LL *doesn't* tell you, is that almost all land in SL belongs to individuals, who by virtue of owning and paying tier on the land, have the right to control acces to that land to whoever they want.

As for griefers, biggots, etc., what do you think *causes* paranoid land owners? They are not the problem, they are a symptom of other problems. You don't like dealing with griefers and biggots, etc.? Well, either do I. Which is why I own land, and when I see one, I ban them so that I don't have to see them again.

As to how if we don't open up, we're going to go under because we won't make any money...dude, I'm not making any money now. In fact, I'm *spending* over $100 a month for my land, and to participate in SL.

I should also mention that my land is *not* banned. People are free to visit my 1/3 sim, and free to explore the landscaped grounds, with the only restrictions being, that the beach is off limits when the owners are using it, and the houses, enclosed in featurless cherrywood cubes at 350m, are just plain off limits unless I'm there and invite you in.

I have a ban list, but the only people on it are people who've griefed me or my neighbors. In the house I also have a security orb, which has the same list. about 80% of the people I've out there are there because I walked up to them, said "Hello", and got shot.

The rest are there because they did the same to a neighbor, or because they wandered over to the beach when I was with my friends and refused to leave the group of half a doze topless girls out swimming sunbathing when told that it was a private beach, or because they broke into my house and started griefing, or were being peeping toms from outside of my house.

LL didn't tell me a lot!!! I've stumbled onto a multi-front war that I am not interested in becoming part of.

I ask questions, I get bull....

I didn't come here to see virtual girls frolicking on a virtual private beach, nor am I interested in some virtual nookie....

WTF?!

Did you totally miss the point of my post or what?! This place is worse than san francisco!!! Which is about the most gentrified pit I have ever experienced!
No wonder: most of the avies I have scanned for profiles seem to hail for the Bay Area, that is, if they even bother to fill out their profiles....

If you are typical of the clowns I'm going to meet in SL then I'm in the wrong virtual world.

I'm obviously not welcome on your land, since you have made it very clear that there's no reason for me to go there... wherever THERE is.

I'm sorry that you pay over $100USD/ mo. for this...

There must be some deeper layer of this shell game that totally escapes me because I cannot fathom what kind of thought goes into paying so much for so little....

Cheers,
=B-)

I "only" own 8000 sq m of land in SL but my contribution (financial, time, commitment and interest) is to me considerable.

If you're looking for level grinding, quests, goals and suchlike, SL has none. I feel that it's is biggest selling point - and also its biggest downfall.

I have got to grips with the building tools, and quite enjoy creating 'stuff' (although, of course, you still have the problem of prim limits - but that's another argument). I enjoy the build, I enjoy the visitors, I don't care if I sell L$10 or L$10,000 worth of goodies from my store in a week.

Maybe you should have a read of an article I have written here entitled What is Second Life? - but the important part I think from what I hear from you is

Second Life is, essentially, a blank sheet of paper. Give a sheet of paper to 50 different people, and each person will make something different out of it. Some might use it to draw or paint a picture; some may write down a poem or the words to a song on it. Others still may cut or fold it into a complex shape, and some will simply just screw it into a ball and throw it at you. All very different - but perfectly legitimate - uses of that same blank piece of paper.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to create your Second Life - you have to find what you enjoy doing, and then seek out others that like it too. However obscure your interests, there will almost certainly be someone else out there who shares it - events are a good way to try and hook up with people.

There's a lot of sex, gambling, and other things that many of us would choose to avoid - but thankfully it's reasonably simple to be able to do that. Just because a lot of people log on to spend all their time doing nothing but cybering doesn't by any means require you to - there are much better things to do here, and I believe that if you seek, you will find. Getting you to Second Life is easy - keeping you here is the challenge.

As a new player, The Shelter and New Citizens Inc are two good places to meet up with other 'dazed, lost and confused' new players who may be able to help you settle in and find out what's out there. Even "Live Help" should be able to find you a Greeter if you haven't already hooked up with one, who may be able to spend some time taking you around to visit places.

Because sex and gambling are popular, naturally they appear more in any listings - but there's plenty more to be found if you take a while to look for it.

okay i am going to stir the pot a bit, i am beta testing my new web based shared banlist system
http://kdc.ethernia.net/sys/ban_list.php?page=1

if someone is interested in the experiment i would be happy to get a few more name or keys that have been proven as griefer (i need the proofs) in order to fuel the list, my current script act like a classic security orb , not yet an interface for fine tuning it (though it really need nothing like this) it use a buffer of 50 requests to keep itself low profile in term of http requests. basically what happend is that it scan regulary the surrounding and build it's own access list by querying the server, if someone in the global ban list is present, the person is instantly, silently teleported home.

Simple effective way to deal with griefers, if the system prove to work properly it mean adding a griefer to it will deny him access to a lot of places of SL, turning his playtime in a mine sweeper game ^_^

the peoples elegible for the banlist are: griefers, land swoopers, scammers

i am open to suggestions.
