I use security systems to extend my estate ban list since they never upgraded past 62 maximum entries. Having twice that much does help. It removes the idiots from the sims i manage and isn't iritating in any way aside lag. Security systems are not a bad idea unless you set them to eject EVERYONE. If you set them to target list of names then your fine.

The only thing I have to hide in my personal home are the twisted prims & scripts I might be working on at the moment which I don't want people seeing - if they're my ideas and my textures I'm just protecting my personal intellectual property.

Visiting other friends around the grid, it's not unusual for our conversation to be interrupted by wandering newbies. They mean no harm (usually) and we treat them nicely, even offering them copies of free gear and landmarks or advice. But they still interrupt conversation that was never intended to include anyone else. They are intruding on other people's privacy.

That's why my house is up in the air a long way. It's why I don't welcome unannounced visitors. It's why, if someone parasails into my living room (as has happened), they get an automated 10 second warning and are then ejected from my land. I don't want them there or I wouldn't have a security orb. Friends who are welcome in my house can be added to my orb list in about 2 seconds. Others need not apply.

LOL Cindy...remind me to give you a heads up before I just pop in to see you! :D Because I don't believe we've actually exchanged friendships yet lol.

One thing most people who get security systems forget is why have they become a target.

If it's because of something like you happen to be a furry in a furry sim, then that's one type of griefer that you can't do much about. Security may sadly be the only way to get rid of them - although security systems are undeniably a griefing tool anyway and you are probably attracting more negative attention than you would just by ignoring people.

But if it's because you're a general all-round asshat, maybe some of the griefing is your own silly fault?

My bigger problem is usually timing.

When I'm bored out of my mind, there's nobody around to visit. When I want to concentrate, everyone I know - and a few I haven't ever spoken to - decide to IM me or send me teleport requests.

People forget that SL is online for a reason - it's a social environment primarily over and above anything else; anything else is just gravy. The building tools are a real big draw and the main reason for most people being here, and money making should be a secondary issue (sadly people do get priorities wrong).

I use Psyke's system as well, and it has proven to be very useful. I originally bought it because I got harrassed by someone wanting me to become his slave, and living on rental land, I couldn't ban him. Now-a-days, when I'm at home, I want to be in peace, whatever it is that I'm doing. If I want company, I go find it in casinos, clubs, malls...

I used to have a friendly 30 sec warning before pushing, but by that time, the more determined ones had made their way into my house. I also had a gentle push, that Psyke's intructions suggested... 0.00001% or something, just to make them realize they're not wanted... but it didn't have much effect if they got inside the house already, it just kept bouncing them off walls

So, I decreased the warning time to 20 secs, increased push to 1%. Still some dude got in to my rooftop, seated himself in a shield or something to avoid the push, and after repeatedly telling him that I'd rather be alone, I had to eject him. The good thing about Psyke's system also, is that you can set it to apply only to your own parcel, so neighbours and their visitors can be in peace.

If the ban and security lines make some people so agitated they need to keep on bouncing on them, so be it, it's their headache, not mine (literally). :p

Just make sure you set it to eject Mia. :) Even that small push can be reported.

Its really sad that people get offended, because security systems are undeniably not greifing on their own, only setting it to push or placing it to harass a neighbour, etc, makes it into a greifing tool. Like any useful tool it can be abused.

Very similiar to push: trampolines and elevators versus push guns.

Thisis not true for all hun.........But You do have a point.
I never did anything to earn to have a protection device. Its the losers that have caused problem for me in my past. Its the griefters and otehr low life sucking loser that caused some of us to have them.........

Its existance is abuse as far as I'm concerned. If it stops me doing what I wish to do in-world, then it's grief.

When someone plonks an ugly build right in front of you, you're told you don't own the view unless you buy it.

So why can't you buy the land around you and set the ban lines on the outside of the parcel, protecting yourself and whatever it is you feel the need to protect. It stops people wandering in, and camera panning, and griefers dropping stuff on you.

All your problems, solved by using in game tools for their intended purpose, and affecting nobody.

Oh... but it'll cost you? Unlucky. You want privacy, pay for it.

Want to have land that you're free to cross at any time with no restrictions? Then buy some.

No, dumb nut. I'm not sinking any more money in shitty software than I already have. Many thanks for sharing your opinion though.

That's why I love these forms! Everyone has an opinion. :D Taking all of them into consideration, I think I'll wait on a security system, until the need arises. I don't create anything that I wouldn't want anyone seeing trust me if I did, it wouldn't be worth looking at!!) and I'm just playin the field having a good time so no sex happening in my place lol, therefore..... I don't think I need one right now. :)

Gee, I guess Lewis must have a super-secret beta release of the SL client. Because ban lines in MY client certainly don't work anywhere near as well as he claims.

Ban lines will stop them from just walking up to you and getting in your face. One point for you. Have a cookie.

Ban lines stop camera panning? Hardly. I can pan a camera into any place in SL that is in range of the camera tools, and ban lines don't affect that at all.

Stops griefers dropping stuff on you? Not yet. They can still stand outside your ban lines and rez stuff to throw at you, or can cause havock with partile spam. In development, perhaps, but not out yet.

So you're only stating one true fact out of three there, Lewis. Not up to your usual standards.

Ban lines are also limited to a small number of individuals that you can ban by name. The only alternative is to set them to ban all, and to only allow in a small group of friends. A 'white-list ban' like that makes your parcel completely inhospitable and ugly to everyone else, and to me is far worse as griefing than a security script that only bans access to a limited sphere of effect.

I've fortunately never needed to use one, but I can see why they could be valuable for some people.

Watch out that it can make you a target for griefers as well as protecting you. If they get a security warning while flying over land, the primal instincts kick in and they suddenly want to steal or at least smush your banana even if there are much nicer ones lying freely on the ground next door. They may not be able to stay for longer than 10 seconds, but they can drop bombs on the parcel in that time (or even grey goo if they're really tired of SL), shoot from adjacent parcels, etc. There are also some other methods that might be used against the orb which I won't describe here for obvious reasons.

Also, to the "you pay the hosting fee for your land so you can do what you like" - I don't think it's quite as simple as that; if it was, Linden Labs could never have been losing money, because tier would have covered all their costs from v1.2 onward. Although you do have the right to do what you want on your own land, it would be nice to bear in mind that SL needs to be a positive experience for innocent non-landowners too, and there isn't a shortage of them.

What's the difference between that and a security system?

I have never needed any security, and don't ever envisage doing so.

Pay for land monthly: check

Paid for security orb: check

Already did, you want unrestrained movement? Go buy yourself a sim.

I can use a security system to protect a skybox 700 Meters up in the air, while allowing anyone who wants to enjoy the lagoon below that skybox to have free access and unimpeded travel. It only affects a spherical area around the orb, and I can set the radius of effect. I can also stop that effect at my parcel limits, so someone on the next parcel over is unaffected by it, even if their skybox is right beside mine.

I can use a security orb to ban all except invited guests from said skybox, without creating an ugly 768 Meter tall tower of ban lines that everyone else nearby must see and has to avoid.

I have two DT security systems on my island. One for a small visually defined area, a secondary island where I have a home, set to only allow friends - not even everyone on my friends list, just those I know are polite enough to IM before arriving to see if it's OK to drop by.
It's there because I got sick of thoughtless people, not always noobs either, just walking in with no warning - they wouldn't do it in a strangers house in RL, why do they think it's OK in SL?
The island auto notegiver also mentions the system and explains it's because I require a little privacy on that 5% of the island and thanks them for respecting that privacy, pointing out that the other 95% of the island is theirs to explore and enjoy.
Anyone breaching it gets 3 30 second warnings with a polite message followed by ejection from the private parcel, on the 4th attempt they get sent home.
Despite this, at least 2 AVs a day get sent home...

The second system got put in when I overran the ridiculous 62 AV island ban list due to the influx of griefers of late. That uses the instant TP home function and the deny access list and is tripped about as often as the 'home' system.

I've found the DT systems very effective, highly configurable and versatile for both large and small areas, and very effective though I believe they are more suited to larger areas because of the number of remote sensors they include.

Nor should I be affected by your obsession with access to every parcel.

Last time I checked, the landowners wishes trumped, so go put it somewhere dark without the sun.

I completely agree. The viewpoint of "it's my land, to hell with everyone else" is selfish and, quite frankly, offensive. (Jack)

It's not about being ejected. I don't hover on other people's property being obnoxious. But when I'm flying somewhere at an altitude under 200 metres and I'm either ejected outright or attacked by a ban line or whatever and I end up someplace else because asshats like Jack feel they have a right to be annoying -- that pisses me off. So if you want to safeguard your space from the world, YOU buy a sim. The rest of SL is public land as far as I'm concerned, whether you "rent" it from LL or not.
