These objects are reporting to a source.

I had two Lindens over late last night trying to capture one of these things - w/o success. We also tried looking for the source - still no success. Has anyone looked underground?

Would it be possible that they don't need a source? Say, the owner rezzed the source initially, then once the self-replicating child was launched, they could just remove the source. Would that work? I was thinking that might be one reason we don't see (or are unable to find) the source.

Last night we watched the Stillman sim fps for a while and it was hovering between 700 and 800. Just before we'd see one of these scanners buzz by, the sim fps would dip to about 425.

juro: i would say its mosty likely (and this is my conjecture from here on out)

that they are self-rezzing, and able to cross sim borders.. so after releasing several, they will generally spit one out before they themselves die, at the same time that one, if sensing a 'friend' already nearby may shoot over to the next sim, basically behaving abit like a loose net... they don't over-populate completely because if they find a sim already populated they will just zoom over to the next, if they don't find an unpopulated sim within x time they probably will just dissapear, that will leave a fairly even, and ever spreading concentration of them throughout the mainland sims.

Its possible they have active listens and communicate with eachother over an unspecified channel to help this, or just have some extra code bogging down their sensor sweeps to keep them from colliding too much.

This would explain a few things:

a) why there is no source object anyone has been able to find, actually emitting them
b) why there do not seem to be several hundred ever colliding in one place at one time
c) why they appear pretty much ubiquituous on the mainland despite no obvious sources.

and yes... if this conjecture would prove to be true, these should be considered an official SL virus.

I wonder if you put up fake objects with the same name in the same location that these appear at, if it will fool the script into thinking its already there and it will just move on?

No.

I have seen them stack, a couple times, while watching them in Seacliff of all places.

I don't know that they are self replicating per say... neither prim seems to contain an object to rez...

I suggest you get your facts straight before slandering me in my own classified thread. It's moronic accusations like yours that make threads like these laughable. Next time before slandering someone I suggest you IM them. I would have been more than happy to speak to you regarding this had you not been such a douchebag and slandered my classified thread.

I think the word you are looking for is libel. :)

Moonshine,

I am a good friend of Pete Fats. I have NOTHING to do with any flying objects of his. I am in a group he created. The group does NOT buy and sell land. I do NOT employ his services for the aquisition of public land. I have been accused wrongly in the past for being a member of a group that had no malicious intent, here we go again.

I have a hard time believing you, simply because you are able to pick up public land in a matter of minutes after it gets released. I've seen it happen, more than once. Nobody is that lucky. IMO you must have automated tools to help you.

The facts as I see them:
A) You pick up public land extremely quickly in sims where Pete Fats has his scanners. What is your secret if you dont use an automated tool? The map hasn't even updated before you're there. I tried again yesterday in Sami, and you were there in just minutes.
B) You are in a group with only you and Pete Fats as members. Clearly you have a close relationship with him.
C) In my land in Kojin, where Pete Fats has his scanners, you have a tiny plot that is not in use, and not for sale. I suspect this plot is somehow connected to the scanners. Why else would a land baron keep a tiny plot that is not profitable?
D) Using another persons object to do the scanning would be the perfect alibi.

Call it moronic if you like. I don't have a problem with that. I may be a moron.

If I am wrong, i am very sorry. I just call it the way i see it. But i may very well be wrong, and i do really hope so, because i did not expect this from you.

I agree with eltee that the real solution is just having more tools to manage your land. I can't speculate about what Pete's stuff is doing, since I really have no idea.

v1.6 tools would be helpful in this case, but I'd like to see them extended so you can (not sure if they do now or not) do autoreturns based on user or whatever. It would help I think.

My feeling is, once the Lindens refuse to punish for scripts like these, it's a green light to use them as retribution.

you're wrong. we are not allowed to grief in kind. you will be suspended, if not banned, for using a replicating tool to intentionally flood a perpetrator's land.

no.. YOU'RE WRONG.

If I perform the exact same action as this individual, with an identical script. Either we are both going down or neither of us are going down. (FIC notwithstanding)

Then maybe, to make this thread less "laughable" and to dispel those, you say, "moronic accusations", you can begin by explaining the reasons behind the facts Moonshine brought to attention.

Found in Batak today. I understand from talking to a laison that they just re-appear when deleted. The key changed everytime we found it.

<192.00000, 64.00000, 400.00000> seems to be a recurring location. I wonder if that's where most of us should be peeking to find this thing.

No, because he felt entitled to litter other people's properties with his viral thingies, without even asking for permission. Why should i waste my time with him when the lindens can ban him with a single click?

Reading this thread I could have sworn this isnt the first time he's done this and was asked to stop it before. Maybe he'll clean them up and just put them back out later when we chill?

Also the modified date on these scripts are from April and May of 2004.

The objects are group owned by BASF.

He's been at this awhile.

My systems have been designed from the beginning to use the method I deemed liest threatening, my avatar, and the worst incident I ever had was where I had created a version that breadcrumbed height scanners because the 15 to 30 minutes I had to spend in a sim to get a good scan. (I don't over-do parallel scripts, I don't believe it's nessessary to grab a sim in 5 seconds, that itself is pointless when the sim's not going anywhere anytime soon) I have since retired that method, for safer methods.

While others have become overly agressive with their scripts, and in several historic cases, people have taken a small chance to violate TOS with their equipment, I have been limiting myself to sim by sim position and server mapping only, my height/owner maps are currently disabled in my system entirely, as I work on systems to ensure I'm not re-grabbing the same sim 5 times, and thus wasting LL's resources and my own.

I honestly get upset to my stomach every time I hear someone else abusing a server to get the data like this, it's really unneeded, and pointless.

My data's limited to a world sim map, with names, at this time, when I am ready for owner maps, I shall gain permission from the owners of the sim I am about to map, and explain every function of my mappers, they will also be designed for minimum impact.

I really wish people wouldn't be abusive in the persuit of data like this, it makes me afraid to do what I do.
