Some of it depends on how much you're willing to pay, the rest how much realism you want.

I've tried on tons of demos, and some skins that are gorgeous just don't look right on me.... they don't look like me, if that makes sense. Others are beautifully done, but the shading on the body isn't quite what I prefer.
I have an older skin from Munchflower which is my all-time favorite, the one I wear almost all the time. I have a couple from Starley (Celestial Studios) that I switch to now and then; I love her work, especially how she does eyes. I also have a couple of Canimal's that I've just recently started wearing. There are lots of high-quality skins out there, it's really just a matter of what look you like. I get demos all the time, and I have different skins for different moods or different looks. _____________________

I own so many skins and there are so many beautiful ones out there but to me.. Skins by Lost Thereian and Chip Midnight are absolutely a whole different category of awesomeness.

Toast Bard, Lost Thereian, and Starley Thereian get my vote for best skins. Sezmra Svarog also makes some very cool skins - honestly there are so many varieties of skins out there now you really should just go wild and demo a bunch of them until you find your own personal style.

I also have a couple of Canimal's that I've just recently started wearing. Amen on Munch and Starley. I wore a Munch skin for the longest time - it's still one of my all-time favorites, and gives my av a whole different look from the ND skins. (I also had a Nora for ages - that may be the other one with tan lines, I'm not sure). I've had a Starley goth skin for months but only recently started wearing it with any regularity (when I'm in the mood), and I agree on her treatment of eyes. For some reason my face looks ten times cuter in her skin than any of my others (that's my forum avatar *points*) ![]() There are lots of high-quality skins out there, it's really just a matter of what look you like. I get demos all the time, and I have different skins for different moods or different looks. I have an entire folder under my "Skins" folder that holds all my demos, and I bet there must be close to 100 demos or more in my inventory. I find myself throwing on demos when friends start asking me for advice on skins, to give them an idea of where to look. I love changing my av appearance to suit my mood. I go from elegant/classical to goth/punk to "normal" at a whim - it's more than the skin though. I have more hair than anything else, and I have favorite combinations of hair/skin/outfits to get the looks I want. What can I say? (hums Boy George "Chameleon" ![]() _____________________

I like Munchflower's skins.. have one called Dragonslayer I got on my first or second day coming into Sl when a friend took me over to Nomine.. I also bought up a couple of her fae skins. All very nice. I also do own some skins from Storma Amarula (sp?), which was the exotica series, as I believe it was called.. my only time I bought photorealistic skins, and they are just too creepy for me, though the work is nice. Those types of skins just aren't for me. I also have some by Cherrybomb.. one of the few I have with blonde brows, and nice for that. However, I'd also really recommend the Hybrid 2 skins by Santana Lumiere.. awesome skins. I own one that I wear at times.

One thing to account for is that some skins go better with certain shapes so that pixy look you want might not go well with that skin that looks hot on a Pam Anderson lookalike shape, etc.
There are tons of nice skins out there as the others in this thread have noted and I really think with time most people will wind up owning a few. Now.......IMO chick skins are easy ![]() Guy skins are where the dilemma lies... |

Now.......IMO chick skins are easy ![]() Guy skins are where the dilemma lies... I dunno - girls are pickier, usually. We want a certain look and won't compromise ![]() But yes, skins for men are trickier. The photo-real skins on men look great but the ones that creep me out are the ones that are bronzed, over-muscled and look like the avie is oiled down for a hot body competition. Maybe that turns some people on, but not me! _____________________

Among the many options on the SS Labs skins are tan lines for top and bottom, which can be chosen seperately. So your girl can look like she normally keeps her top on, or like she often sunbathes topless, with just the bikini bottom on. Just one bikini style to choose from, though. It wouls be awesome if you could get the tan lines to mathed the alpha map of your favorite swimsuit.

I'm with Cindy. I have a bunch of skins and I rotate through them pretty regularly.
One thing that is an absolute must is that they must work with my face shape and not all do! For instace, I have friends that have the SecondSkin line and it looks fabu on them but it just didn't work on me. Right now I'm in love with Starley's Charmed series and Munch's weirdo series (the elementals and other tatooed ladies -- i don't think she actually calls it the weirdo series lol). I wore Max's skin for the longest time but the placement of the belly button bothers me. Need to get him to make me a custom with the BB in the right place. I love having lots of different skins and being able to change my total look on a dime. I'm a very protean person in SL. |

I dont know if she still has them out but starley had some awesome underpants layer tanlines at Celestial Studios and her make up and her skins is just awesomeness too.

I was trying on some Charmed demos when I ran into you yesterday -- you were AFK or I would have said hiya! _____________________

can anyone recommend any good _modifyable_ male skins? I am using a goth skin by Max atm, but none of his are mod, and id like to alter some parts and drop in a tattoo....

Yeah, the only skins I've seen that are modable at all (Munch's and Nora come to mind right offhand) are just modifyable in terms of tint. If you want a tattoo, you generally have to either wear it on a clothing layer or have the skin maker add it to the skin. Same for altering parts... you pretty much have to get a custom skin made for that.

I'm using Dragonfly designs. Good blend of realistic and painted. Maybe not everyone's bag, but its mine. I don't want an uber realistic skin.
For tattoos I go to two freinds if I don't find something in shops. Both are great custom designers. |

I am expecting to release the male Neko skins this next weekend. Regular male skins will follow in a few weeks after that. There will definately be gothic skins among them. =) _____________________

Well, I am still attached to my old school Munchflower "classic" male skin, but I really like the skins that Mina Firefly makes (Mina's Tattoos in game). All these new photorealistic skins are mostly using the same pictures from the same site that has a free model available. Looks like Mina spends a lot of time making the skins as perfect as possible... now we just need some more male skins so every guy in SL doesn't end up looking "Lost..."
