Thumbs up! They should put Yard Sale signs on lots of 16m plots and telephone poles instead of in the events listing! ;)

'Advertisements for commercial products or services will be deleted from the events calendar. Repeated misuse of the event posting system for this purpose may lead to disciplinary action.'

I have an event area at Mr. P's that I occasionaly hold events such as Product Demos for new things I am excited about. Ive only done this like twice but I have always given the creation out for free to those who attended. Would this proposition make this against the TOS now?

Also, I sometimes hold show and tell type events there with prizes and the main purpose is to drive traffic to my shop (at least I'm honest). Would this be a no-no now as well?

I volunteer to be event list resmod.

Not the way I read it, Beau. Neither are you saying, "Hey, come buy stuff from me and we'll call it an event!"

You know, a lot of those people don't even read the forums. I hope you are planning to make it somehow very clear to someone about to post their yard sale (I have never posted an event) that if they do so they will be disciplined.

Otherwise you are going to have a cornfield full of irate residents.

Speaking of which, Discovery Magazine will be doing an article on it in their April issue.

Thumbs up right in the face.

Of course, how will this be enforced, compared to the myriad other rules that are broken on a daily basis? The Lindens are stretched as it is. Maybe we need event resmods.

Weren't announcements about store sales already verboten?

Hmm interesting... now I'm seeing yard sale purposefully mispelled in the events list to get around this. Wonders who is going to police this 24-7?

For someone who loves going to yard sales, this kind of sucks. But yes i did get tired of seeing the same person or group of people listing an "event" every hour on the hour for the same crap & freebie stuff they are calling a yard sale.

I don't think the problem is getting people to pay to use the classifieds, it's to get people to search the classfieds rather than search the events. It's a habit that's hard to break.

posted this is the events forum, double posting here:

proposing to eliminate yard sales from the events calendar and redirecting folks to the classifieds where they belong in most cases.

also added the following text to the ever-increasing events posting rules :

'Advertisements for commercial products or services will be deleted from the events calendar. Repeated misuse of the event posting system for this purpose may lead to disciplinary action.'

thumbs up or thumbs down....?

Both thumbs way up! Woo Hoo!

Very true. There should be global announcements. There used to be, so it's not like it can't be done. They still have them for when the grid is being taken off line.

On the lighter side ya think they can take their yard sale items to the corn field :D perhaps sell to each other :D yeah im kidding

You know, I have to say that i'm for banning Yardsales off of the events.

And it's a shame because for every 9 fake yard sales selling freebies every day there's 1 legitimate one that actually sells stuff for a good deal.

I didn't bother to take a look at yardsales until recently and I found that there was some cool stuff to be found at good prices, but pretty rarely. But that was maybe one sale a week, the other 20 were nothing but freebies with descriptions like "24/7 yard sale with new items constantly!" Which makes you think...isn't that just a store with a funny name?

Bah...well it's just another thing that's abused and ruined.

Take 'em out, real yardsales will have to be advertised via word of mouth now I guess.

No, they can still put them in Classifieds, though they have to pay for that.

Good point. But I think any real yard sale would pay for it, though it'll get buried in the Classifieds section.

The was horribly evocative of the Children of the Corn. Thanks, now I can't sleep!

My personal experiences...

I've been to a lot of yard sales, and have enjoyed my fair share.

But yes, a lot of them broke the Events rules (even back then), considering that one big factor was NO HOST IS PRESENT so I couldn't ask questions. Or, they may have been away, partying elsewhere, and IM just doesn't have that "Come up and show me that porcelain rug!" touch.

It was just a sad, logical progression to stretch "yard" into something even more deviant from there, as has been well-pointed out in this thread.

And that's why I stopped attending yard sales--too hard to find the soup in the bowl!

To be honest, I haven't looked at the events calender in several months. As soon as it got cluttered with Yard Sales. When I first started, there were all kinds of events like Trivia, Classes, Skydiving Contest, Building Contest ect.. Of course that is when event host were paid by LL.

I'm curious. Will this move to get rid of yard sales from the events calendar be the time to reinvestigate the calendar? See if there are other things that might have a chance to grow with some of the weeds cut back?

And, for the record, thumbs up for me too ...
