So the winners are announced... the builds begin... just wondering, as I missed last year's, do people follow the theme of the 'real' event, or is it a case of 'do whatever you like on that plot they gave you'?

It looks an interesting event real life, although I don't see myself ever attending. However, I'll probably drop by the in-game build.

I thought there might have been more discussion about it here though - or have I missed it?

Hey Lewis... you can read the initial announcement and details here:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/08/15/burning-life-2006/

But to answer your questions, as I understand this whole thing, it's pretty much do whatever, as long as it's non-commercial. I have only talked to a few others who won parcels (I cant believe I got one!), so I don't know if any are going to follow the RL Burning Man theme for this year. I did bounce by the site and saw that it's "Hope and Fear: The Future" this year. The Burning Life festival, on the other hand, just has a few very broad categories: realistic, surrealistic, futuristic, and retrospective. Pretty much anything goes, huh?

Hope to see you there Lewis!

I thought the four choices would be 'subsections' within one main theme, so that similar themed builds would end up together (as, it seems by a bit of reading) happens at the real event, but there's still an overall theme.

The blog post doesn't really give a lot of information, and I already asked the same question there :)

If it's just going to be an incoherent random mishmash of different people's builds, then it might as well be hosted on the mainland :D but my impression was that it was a little more organised than that.

Is anyone 'overseeing' the project in any way? I'm really just curious, that's all, and might try for a plot next year.

as I understand it pretty much anything goes and, much like burning man used to be but is no more, there is no oversight. I am the winner of a plot and put myself in the lottery with a tribute to Starax in mind because I loved his products (I didn't know the guy personally).

I visited BL last year pretty extensively. As a matter of fact, my atlantian antannea and necklace are still two of my favorite items in my inventory. The builds varied widely and were all over the place and didn't seem to follow a theme.

Hmm if there's no oversight who enforces zoning regulations? After all, people were asked to pick what they wanted to do.

The meatspace event theme is "Hope and Fear: The Future" ... anyone planning on following that theme?

Im confused, isnt burning man supposed to be an experiment, to see the effects of a makeshift community, isn's that what Second Life is ?

Bah, this is two years in a row I tried and didn't get a plot. :(

I don't think I'll be around for 2007 Burning Life. :(

Sorry about that, Psyra... two years, that sucks. If it makes you feel any better, long after Burning Life is over and some of the builds are forgotten, people will still be exclaiming over the beauty and cleverness of your avatars. :)

Awrk *hugs* heheh, thankies, but it's okie. Ilianexsi's right. Besides, you don't need no birdbrain cramping your style. :p :D

And I'm only a few weeks from having a permanent display at a forever location. I suppose two weeks is neat, but forever is better. ^_^

Exactly so on the forever thing but nonetheless the offer is there and open if you want. Or if you just want to come put a birdy on the plot or something.. let me know. Actually a birdy would work well for what I have in mind.

Excellent! I did the space elevator the first year and missed the second. This year I have to do something surreal. :)

Half you plot? That is very decent of you considering that you have two plots (at least).

Hmm, true, that. 240 or so entries, 168 winners, guess the chances are still there. And 100% if I can assassinate 35 or so current entrants before the 31st! *Alfred Hitchcock theme plays above sounds of bird wings en masse*

lol Psyra :D

I somehow missed the entry thread this year, until after the lottery was closed, not that I've been building much lately anyway...

But I did have an installation idea that would even fit the RL BM theme...

I just hope Seifert is doing something this year.

In my case, only a single plot will be claimed, simply due to time constraints. However, since avatars are treated as individuals by LL, those RL humans who have multiple lots under different names will be allowed to build upon them if they have the time. Also, be careful about naming alts on that list, as individuals have been suspended for outting alts in the forum.
