Try working in a nursing home as a nurses aide Mickey. yes, I was paid a dollar more an hour. But theres the situation. Constantly asked to help out with heavier residents, I get cold stares if I don't. I helped 98% of the time.. I ask someone for help changing the sheet son a bed..and all of a sudden Im a helpless worker who can't do his job on his own, or the female na's had to 'keep to their job' which currently consited of gossiping about last nights dates.
Where I work now, a woman has gotten away with refusing to pull frieght or deal with dead pallets or garbage for months. A male refused ONE time. He was fired. Same wages, btw. And no, I'm not kidding. I find the lack of sexism and racism, an environment where you get by on your own merits positive. Why be offended? |

Look.
Racism and sexism is never good or right against everyone, and saying that "your finally paying your dues" is equally retarded, it would be like picking on the germans because of hitler. Did you forget that there were many white people who were part of the underground rail road for example? do their kids deserved to be tracked down and be exempted for being part of that, since they don't have dues to pay? What about the white English? Scottish? Irish? people are pretty ignorant when it comes to this, they see white and they don't stop to think "were they southern american plantation owners?" No they dont. Even positive racism is BAD, an 4.0 perfect student should get to go to college, they tried their ass off... they shouldn't be worth any less, mentally, just because they are born with a certain color of skin or because they are not male. Racism and sexism is very much alive because people vendicitive. My ansestors were dutch, english, irish, scottish and german... we came to america well after this bullcrap with slavery and we never approved of it. So tell me why I should be called cracker, or the man, or because I have a penis, shovinestic? I shouldn't, you should have to know me personally before assuming or claiming ANYTHING, and thats why I can't stand affirmative action, it is a faceless system that is still racism, and as long as it stands there will be racism because people WILL be jealous, there will be generations of students, white or otherwise (as mexicans are becoming one of the minorities large enough to no longer benefit from the system) who were SCREWED out of college and a degree that'd help them plan their lived based on SKIN COLOR. Isn't that what we were fighting against, judgements made on skin color? Thanks for putting up with my rant.... its just that "your turn" crap really eats me up, I did NOTHING wrong, my family did NOTHING wrong. |

Oh, I wanted to add...
I've been on the net at least 7 or 8 years, since I was little... I've never seen such a large amount of females in an online setting as I have secondlife, while there are plenty of male posers, by and large that isn't as much the case as I've seen elsewhere. Secondlife really has done something right... I think its one of those games that don't have a bias soley on its realm and setting (Dungeons and dragons) but truely friendly to everyone, and its got the freedom to create... People liked the sims because they could import works of their own and also put them up for download, you felt smarter after making something popular... the sims online came and that aspect surged with male and female gamers... but that creative aspect was lacking...No way to import, you could only show your creative side by decorating with preset objects. This is where I think LL has triumphed, as personal as you want to be, you can be. |

The last thing that comes to mind is that the little girl inside can be a beautiful as she likes. All the wishes, “if only I…” can come true. We can be as glamorous, sexy, trampish or, whatever as we wish. We are not judged by men on looks we can’t do anything about. Do others, men and women agree with me? Disagree? What about men, why do you come here? Jen As a new male member this is the first thing I noticed. Women who in the RL don't get the attention they deserve for whatever reason aren't judged that way here because nobody knows any better. In SL women are judged by who they are not what they are. It seems to have given many women the chance to achieve the happiness they crave in RL. I think it is great that everybody gets to feel good about themselves. I came in here because I was bored with all my other computer games and as someone who is new to online gaming has found a wealth of new friends who are bright, witty and fun to be around. What do they look in RL, who cares this isn't RL and I'm here to enjoy myself. I haven't had so much fun in years and at times am laughing so hard I can't communicate. I love this place and every woman is beautiful if she so chooses. |

Who said anything about "your turn"?
It's more about "THEIR turn"! Do a search on White Privilege. It changed my whole worldview. There ARE certain things that we, as white people, experience and receive simply because we are white, or christian, or male or whatever. I had never even thought about these things until recently. I constantly hear stuff like "What if we had WET, White Entertainment Television... hmm? THAT would be racist". To this I respond: What are the most popular networks over the past 20 years? What are the most popular shows? Now... how many of them were diverse in ANY way? We DO have WET. They just named them NBC, CBS and ABC. If you think that women, people of colour or non-christians have it better in the Western world than White Christian Males, you're SORELY mistaken. |

We don't have white entertainment television, so quit with the drivel. Get past the victim card.
We have popular network shaped by years of being on air, sponsors etc. And its changing. Women in america have it THE SAME as men. Minorities have it THE SAME in america. The only difference is those in our minds. And laws won't change those. I for one celebrate equality, and not 'x' hsitory month. No PLEASE lets get back on topic. |

"Their turn" is "Our turn"
Use your head... the college class sizes have limits and that is just the tip of the ice burge. There shouldn't be %(@*ing turn taking, the days for that should have never started and they should NOT be continued. Go into a room of children, they're innocent. Pick out a characteristic and start giving cake to those children that have it, say blue eyes maybe? tell the other children the blue eyed children require the cake for their wellbeing, and don't explain it any further... See who gets picked on... exactly. Giving privilage to one group is almost the same damn thing as taking one away from another. |

We'd need an analysis of how many male avis buy clothes for themselves and how much they pay for them. |

I don't really see that as sexism. I see that as the majority of styles were directed towards women as a user base. Mens fashions are coming up to the forefront and prices are bit higher based on demand.

Women Men?
04-30-2006 15:35
A thread in another area got me to thinking about why so many women enjoy SL. Speaking for myself, several reasons come quickly to mind. SL is a world where women truly have equality to a much greater extent than in RL. The primary advantage men have over woman in RL which, influences many things is physical strength. Here I am just as strong as any man. I don’t need him to move or lift something. I can truly do anything men can do. So I have an equal opportunity to do anything I want to try. Also, the good old boy networks do not exist. Men aren’t given advantages just because they are men. I don’t have to split my time between a man, children and doing what I want to do. I don’t have to feel guilty if I chose work over children. If a woman wants to devote full time to making money, she can easily do so and not feel guilty. The second is harder to explain. It has to do with a sense of security. Here, I can get all the attention and positive affirmation without the down side. I don’t have to worry about unwanted attention. I do not have to fear the male’s greater physical strength The last thing that comes to mind is that the little girl inside can be a beautiful as she likes. All the wishes, “if only I…” can come true. We can be as glamorous, sexy, trampish or, whatever as we wish. We are not judged by men on looks we can’t do anything about. Jen Getting back on the original post ( Hi Jen )...woman might like SL, as your creativity is wat make you a winner...you don't HAVE to kill anyone else to come first. ( except when it's THAT time, and you want to kill everyone, and LL have places to do it ) _____________________

There was a topic in the middle of all this somewhere. Speaking from the male point of view. I DO think there is an equallity element in SL that doesnt exist in the real world. In SL, it doesnt matter who you are,.or what sex you are,.your colour is irelivent also considering theres probably more pale 'undead' or red impish ppl wandering about the metaverse

I realise someone will shoot this down in flames, but it is important to me, and I wish to share it with those of you who will hear something they relate to.
When I first came to SL I was very shy, unconfident, had a low-self opinion and was not at all happy with my life. Within days I had met people from all over the world. People who did not judge me on my rl looks, nor my age, not my sex, religion, skin color or weight. They spoke to ME, the me inside. The real me. A year and a half later and I am a much happier person - in real life! I am so much more confident, SL has let me prove to myself that I can hold my own amongst other people. I have a thriving business in SL - I did that, me, not-so-useless-after-all me! I have dear friends who care about me and miss me when I am not around. SL has enabled me to discover so much about myself, lessons I needed to learn but was unsure how to go about in real life. Yeah, laugh if you like, Second Life has changed me - I am a new person, and I like the new me a lot better! And so do my friends and family. OK, shutting up now, hehe |

the comment was meant to be ironic hehe
anyway back to the topic ... I mostly play SL because I like th infinite possibilities the world gives us, I can look how I like, wear what I want, and chat with people from all around the world. Here the look isn't the most important, you can meet people with the same interests and chat without the constant judgment overyour shape, look or whatever. I have a quite demanding RL work that keeps me from having a busy social life ... and as I need some sort of connection with people SL (and the timezone difference) let me have these interactions I can't often have in RL. _____________________

I'm sorry, but what the hell?? This starts out being a thread about positive things, about why we like SL, why we came here, why we think it's great-- a valid question, I thought-- and instantly somebody has to inject a personal agenda argument into it? There was nothing sexist about the original post. Women do have disadvantages in the real world, because of our (usually, but not always) lesser size and strength, because we've been conditioned over the generations to choose family over a career.... the whole idea of the post was celebrating the fact that those differences don't exist here, that this is a great world for everybody, regardless. Even if you ignore that aspect, it's still a valid question... the traditional 'videogame audience' is largely male, so it's kinda cool to have a virtual world which is equally popular with women, and it's valid to ask why that is. Why does somebody always have to turn these threads into a personal argument? How about, if you think it's a sexist question, go elsewhere and don't post? I'm sorry to rant, but I'm so sick of seeing every other thread in these forums turn into a flamefest. Personally, I enjoy SL for a lot of the same reasons as the OP... this world has opportunities for everybody, where you go and how well you do is based on your imagination and your talent, not your connections or your gender or any other thing that influences RL opportunities. I enjoy it because I love being able to do so many things that aren't possible in the real world... and because I love having the tools to turn anything from my imagination into reality. I love being able to meet so many people who I'd never have a chance to meet in RL. And yes, I enjoy SL because I love being able to look as good as I want, being able to change my look in an instant, being able to look completely different from my RL self. And I totally understand the 'security' thing... it's great to have control here, to not have to worry about my personal safety. That's equally true for anyone here, male or female, but it's particularly significant for women, I think. Very well said |

Why women like SL
04-30-2006 16:09
Well for one, I can make my butt smaller with a lever.
nah, more than that. I like the fact I can fart about and do whatever the heck I want. If I want to sit about and look all Barbie fine. If I want to look like a Louis XVI dresser and carry an M16 and go shoot couch cushions cos they arent dressers like me, yippie! there is a place to do it. In Rl let me be some rifle tottin mama and see how the ol boys get. You infridge on the code. At least in the area where I was born and raised. I think the biggest thing that makes SL popular with women is the fact that it is free form. It appeals to the get creative in male or female. And I love the diversity. Goth or Furry, viva la differance! Kit |
