The opt out service in no way is satisfactory. From what you indicate, a search for a given name will still produce the name, and a key of all 0's.

No presence in the database at all, of any kind, is what I demand of spam list builders such as yourself. This is no better than the principle of Gator or any other adware that forces you to "opt out". It forces itself on you against your wishes, and getting out of it is a nightmare.

"Opt out" services are well documented as often simply being validation or "list switch" warnings to the creator of these disgusting and invasive tools. Such FORCED visits also feed your hits. Even if it's one hit, you are forcing people to benefit you. Your "word" that this isn't the case holds no weight at all.

I am exploring every possible avenue to protest this, both within and outside of SL. I await LL's decision. If they permit it, I intend to recommend to several people that I have referred to SL that they cancel their accounts (and they will if I ask them to), and I myself will scale back to my "free forever" status. This will allow me to continue my objections in game without having to invest in a company that supports such dishonorable practices.

I will also make it as widely known by publishing on my website, and sending off to as many gaming sites and review magazines as I can find, that LL enables this by permitting users to collect information from their software binaries and files and publishing it to the world. After all, if they permit it, it's true.

A spammer can get a bullshit credit card (Capitol One will give you one pretty much just for signing a piece of paper), set up a 9.99 account, and spam every user in that list. With some care it will be very difficult to actually tie it to a user. The BS account will be banned, along with the credit card and IP of undoubtedly some Internet cafe somewhere.

You're not doing anybody any favors. You are entirely serving your own interests. All this "new vendor" garbage is just a weak and obvious attempt to build support. I also find it difficult to believe that new vendors only have this as an option. Vendors never had it before, they will continue to succeed without it.

The info was obtained within SL, it is the only place it can be obtained, that is where it was created, that is where it exists, that is where it should remain. Anything else compromises my sense of security within the environment.

If I, or anybody I know, reports one unsolicited marketing-based tell or message of any kind, we will do everything we can to bring this to as much light as possible.

In case I haven't made it clear, I completely oppose this practice. I do not pay LL to even allow the possibility of this. If they do, you will still have to hear it even though I own land and don't pay LL a dime.

The thing I really dont get is why is spam such a big deal? Its free to get rid of unlike the "spam" you get in your mailbox which you have to pay trash removal to take care of. It takes no more effort than clicking a button. What one person sees as spam another might see as a great deal. Its not illegal for Pizza Hut to send me all their coupons every week, and no one lashes out at them....so why the big fuss over a piece of electronic trash that takes little effort and no money to dispose of?

However as soon as they start charging me to delete stuff off of my computer, I'll be the first one jumping on the "anti-spam" bandwagon.

Until then i'll spam if the need arises....and this guy ^ will be the first to get it.

Ulrika, get in touch - I'll have to give you an updated dump from SLBoutique.

So, has anyone on the SL grid received an unwanted IM spam from an automated scripted system? No? Didn't think so. I'm not saying it won't happen some day, but that person will be banned. That's the key difference; its easy to ban someone from SL. Banning someone from email? Good luck.

Now, raise your hand if you've received conference IMs, unwanted teleports or seen commands issued in open chat (ao on... ao off... ao on... ao off) that should be on a silent command channel? Yes? You have? Me too. And its annoying.

Regards,

-Flip

A very viable way is to send a notecard via Esmay's courier system. I have yet to see anyone be banned for sending those out, and it uses the same information thats contained in this database. Yes it can be annoying at times, but I can think of a hundred things more annoying than deleting a couple notecards a day.

I would love that! As always I'll make the final database available for download to SL's up-and-coming entrepreneurs.

Send me a copy, I'll merge it, and then I'll send you a version. :)

As always a URL can be sent by email to Ulrika.Zugzwang@gmail.com and the current database can be downloaded here.

you may want to run some kind of duplicate remover, look for madison gardner and you'll find she appears twice ( due to the recent capitalisation of avatars upon request thingy)

I'll have to fix that. The trick is, how does one know which name is correct without verifying it using in-world tools. Hmm.

I take it you don't have a field for when an entry was added to the DB?

While we're on the subject of Ulrika's nifty tools, the log colorizer seemed to have an issue with the 1.9.x timestamp feature.

Just for what it's worth. :)

I'm well over 100,000 now. :-) Its hard to keep up any more.

The REALLY fun game to play is to see which avatar keys have more than one name. Then you get to see the dirty names people came up with before Linden intervention. Like "Torley Torgeson" becoming "Torley Linden" - the nerve of some people! ;)

I think my favorite was this change:

IveGotABigDick Pole ---> IveGotABigOne Pole

Brilliant! :)

I don't know if you should remove duplicates like these, could be helpful to have a list of changed names. Would be helpfull if it is also listed which name is the current one.

yep would be helpful if it indicated which name was the correct one, but adding a field (as well as determining) the cirrect one would add a fair amount of overheasd I should imagine, maybe just using the most recent 'name' for each key would be sufficient? thus making a key unique (as Linden intended)

Anybody's welcome to use my name2key database which currently has about 113,000 keys in. There are full downloads available that are updated daily and there's an email and llHTTPRequest interface that you can use to do lookups. It's all free.

http://www.moopf.com/name2key.php

I combine my own data with data from slboutique's database and the w-hat database and if anybody else has a database that they'd like me to merge in just let me know.

You could have the database send an email to an object in-world whenever a duplicate was found, which used llRequestAgentData to get the correct name for each key, then checked them against the names on file and reported back.

I just got flamed to hell and back by her via IM in world. Clearly, she doesn't understand how it works other than "this is bullshit!", which seems to be the only proof she cared to offer showing she understands what avatar keys are and can be used for. I tried to explain it calmly, several times, but somehow she thinks if I have her key, I can tell her RL gender, name, address and phone number. She would not accept my explanations. I also find it interesting she admits she DIDN'T READ THIS THREAD before flipping out.

She also threatened to write a script that would do the absolute worst thing she could with an avatar key (I provided her mine) using LSL, and then said she's leaving SL because of this. She also deleted all her items from SLBoutique in a rage and has withdrawn from helping Relay For Life this year.

Yet her profile claims that she avoids drama at all costs? Isn't it funny that the ones who say "No drama!" in their profile are always the ones seeking it out at all costs?

Regards,

-Flip

Take some midol have a drink or two and chill its not like they have your real name credit card information date of virginity loss and drivers license number. Its an avatar key. Avatar keys are essential to things like vendors and web sales sites. I guess if you don't want to ever sell or buy anything that is kewl.

BTW Making threats is a TOS violation sweetie and this post has been abuse reported.

What I find absolutely hilarious is that her email to me came from a domain name which it looks like she owns and has her RL address, telephone number and name details listed on the lookup :)

Obviously this person really cares about her privacy.

Ironic isn't it how all the no drama people are the biggest drama mongerers out there.
