May I advise that everyone register on a few of the forums they like, then? Or at least a few they can stand...

Because after this, you may have problems finding one...

No, just all the forums where we decide what to discuss and what is important.

Without general, I see no reason to be on the boards at all. I don't use most of them, except maybe once in a while Technical or Preview. The rest? Bah. Who cares? I don't cruise the classifieds here and I have come to the conclusion that SL Answers sucks for actually getting real answers. Stupid blog.

So, bye-bye General. Bye-bye Second Life Forums. I have no reason to visit you with that rift.

On second thought, maybe I won't miss the drama too much.

Well, at least they told us when.

Other than that, I don't think I agreed with a single word Torley said.

Riiiiggghhhttt... Wait, I've already got an account there. So, how can I miss the drama of the Official (or is that Offal now?) Forums, if I am there?!

*shrug* I'll probably be on SLUniverse too. Why not spread the love around?

Pity.

The "Free accounts will make more furries =/" thread will never see its one-year anniversary.

I feel sad. :(

Because after this, you may have problems finding one...

Linden staff have said the forums will still be available in read only form, so people will still be able to read the posting in the Resident Web Site forum, and other places where alternate forums have been advertised in the forums here.

There is also a list of resident sites, specifically forums, on the secondlife.com community page, which is at http://secondlife.com/community/fansites.php .

Also, one can simply put "Second Life" and "forums", or similar phrases, in as search terms at Google and pretty quickly come up with links to alternate forums dedicated to Second Life.

Speaking of the Official Linden Blog, I don't seem to be able to access the blog page. Anyone else having that problem?

I just dont like that they are using "money" as a BS excuse. If that was the case, the forums as a whole would close. What this is, is LL removing what they see as negative feedback to their program. "If they cant see people complaining, then all is rosy."
It's as simple as that - they dont want people looking into SL to see the various complaints and rants, so they are removing our voice to do so.
That way, people that are researching SL are led to believe that it is a fine, bug-free program, and they sign up yet another unverified account.
I think its BS that a program, "run by the residents", isnt even allowing the residents the right to speak freely.

I had finally gotten around to adding the proper copyright information to my forums so I could submit them for the list. That page isn't coming up either. Despite many "few people use the forums" posts, it appears perhaps more than expected are actually showing up. This is the page (along with other secondlife.com pages) that isn't coming up, but is where the list of sites appears:

http://secondlife.com/community/fansites.php

For anyone who hasn't had a chance to check out my Second Life Home Page forums yet, they are a clone of this forum's structue using the latest version of vBulletin (3.6). The site has been pre-paid for two years and has 1TB of monthly bandwidth which hopefully will be enough to cover the regular traffic.

http://forums.slhomepage.com

The "Resident Run Websites" forum is not closing so hopefully people will use that resource to check out some of the options. You can also find a recent review of a number of the resident-run sites by Aimee Weber here:

Not a single word?!

So, They're closing more than the 5 drama infested forums?
And, They're NOT going to leave them in read-only mode?
and as well, They really haven't changed their mind about closing the classifieds forum?
etc... etc...

We're Doooomed the 4ear is upon us!

(ignore this post, it has no point other than to raise more unnecessary drama and to bring my post count closer to 1000 before the official forums all vanish forever. According to rumor.)

Goodbye to the (admittedly dysfunctional) community that was the SL forums, and hello to the fracturing of SL.

Personally, I'm not going to miss General at all. And as I said in my comment on the blog, good riddance. It's worth losing the .5% of useful discussions to also lose all the drama and whining and childish crap.

Yes, it is a shame that it became necessary to close the official discussion forum, but I don't know why we're all so surprised; just look at the last year or so. A good portion of General was hostility, personal attacks, childishness and whining, so much so that the Lindens were having trouble keeping things under control by themselves. They got resident volunteers to try to help handle the job, and the resmods were met with more hostility and an almost total lack of respect. As the date of closure approached, the level of useful information in General dropped to almost nothing.

As I commented in the blog, if more people had responded to the announcement of the upcoming closing by demonstrating that they were capable of having discussions without resorting to drama, tantrums, or any of that other BS, maybe things would have gone differently. As it is, the current status of General just proves that it's outlived its usefulness.
