From: Ilianexsi Sojourner Personally, I'm not going to miss General at all. And as I said in my comment on the blog, good riddance. It's worth losing the .5% of useful discussions to also lose all the drama and whining and childish crap.
Yes, it is a shame that it became necessary to close the official discussion forum, but I don't know why we're all so surprised; just look at the last year or so. A good portion of General was hostility, personal attacks, childishness and whining, so much so that the Lindens were having trouble keeping things under control by themselves. They got resident volunteers to try to help handle the job, and the resmods were met with more hostility and an almost total lack of respect. As the date of closure approached, the level of useful information in General dropped to almost nothing.
As I commented in the blog, if more people had responded to the announcement of the upcoming closing by demonstrating that they were capable of having discussions without resorting to drama, tantrums, or any of that other BS, maybe things would have gone differently. As it is, the current status of General just proves that it's outlived its usefulness. QFT. The general forum is like heroin for me - I keep coming back, even though it destroys a little bit more of me every time I do. Yes, I won't argue that there are sometimes important things that are brought up - but you know what they say about 1000 monkeys.

From: Ilianexsi Sojourner Same to you, I'm sure. When they were still here, you could just choose to not read the ones you didn't like. With them gone, no one has a choice. So have a little decency and stop rubbing our noses in it.

So what all of you are saying is that people should only be allowed to say things that you approve of?
Did we all move to China while I was asleep last night?

You're welcome to say whatever you want, as long as the owners of the privately owned forum allow it. What's being stated is that how you say it is just as important. Telling someone to shut the hell up is an excellent example of the quality of what passes for discourse around General and perfectly, albeit ironically, illustrated her point.

Did we all move to China while I was asleep last night? FREE SPEECH! Do you act like you do on the forums in the grocery store? Do you think the movie theater should allow you to be verbally abusive to other customers? Many of you have gotten away with crappy behavior here for so long you just expect to be able to. Go try it at some other business you patronize and see how long you last. This isn't a free speech issue, there is no free speech here, this is a business. Get some perspective.

From: Barnesworth Anubis SHUT THE HELL UP CORY EDO See, the use of my name as a way to personalize and thus soften the blow of being told to "shut the hell up" is a wonderful way to get your point across and still maintain an air of civility. To me, this says "I care enough about you to read your name at the top of your post, and ensure that you know my statement is directed to you and you alone: shut the hell up." And I appreciate it.

If things get on your nerves this badly that you start wanting to sniping at people, why not use the handy Ignore Posts by User feature? That's what it's there for.
Oh, wait, nevermind. There won't be a reason TO ignore posts by the user anymore. *sigh* Gah, gotta get out of the pity party mode. Okay.. I'm going to find a griefer and... if I finish this thought, this thread would get locked - which would be pointless, anyways.

I don't think its so much the fact that people got on other people's nerves, with or without the Ignore Posts feature. Its the fact that LL can't use the Ignore Posts feature, nor can they with any amount of begging or pleading somehow persuade people at large to at least play nice with each other. Overall I can easily see why closing the forums is a logical step for LL. They seem to be very committed to going open source and thus removing the "official" general forum so that user-based forums take over the job of maintaining community...which has long been fractured in SL and becomes more so every day as more users join. There hasn't been a unified community in SL in years. In fact, the only SL community the official forums represents is the forumites that post here. The removal of Classified, while a personal bummer for me, also makes sense. Couldn't expect them to provide a free forum for advertising forever for people.

I wouldn't be terribly suprised if they eventually get the axe down the road, but I'll enjoy them as long as they're around.

There's something ironic about saying stupid shit, someone saying that you are saying stupid shit, that person replying to that person by saying "Shut the hell up, I'm using free speech", but I can't quiet put my finger on it.

I am so heartbroken about no longer being able to read any of your sweet infromative posts that I plan to sit down and write a long endearing farewell post to all of you.
Look for my heart wrenching, tear inducing post on the general forums on Saturday morning ok? It'll be right there.

In some ways I considered making an analogy to death for the closure of the forums, but I guess it would be more accurate (and less dramatic) to call it change.
I hope it doesn't sound too sappy to say the forums really meant something to me. Like my college years, I can recall a lot of laughs, some brutal battles, occasional moments of learning, and an almost perpetual sense of intoxication.
At the same time, we are starting something new. Resident-run forums...nobody in particular flaunting "official" status. If we don't like one forum, we move to a competing forum ... or if you are so inclined, stick around that forum and complain, it will be your choice.
Things will be different. We won't like some aspects of it. We will love other aspects of it. I guess eventually it will grow on us. But overall the forums closing is a melancholy affair for me.
Desite the rampant fucktarderie...
...ahh who am I kiddin...
BECAUSE of the rampant fucktarderie, I'm gonna miss what we had here. <3 to you guys.

Good time, I guess, to remind people about the replacement forums at http://sl.stratics.com - Stratics aims to provide a comprehensive replacement. There are many behind the scenes changes going on - but an official announcement will be made shortly. Lewis
