There is support for building and scripting in SL and on the forums, which has been previously stated. The school is less about building and more about architecture. Whereas building WILL be covered, the fact of the matter is why would you choose brick for your building? Because it is a strong material, fire-resistant? If you like the way it looks then more power to you.. but think about what you are designing and why you are choosing certain elements. This is a small portion of what the school will cover..

Thanks for your messages. I will have a look in the places suggested. As to why I've chosen brick for my house, well, only because of the few textures I found under the Textures tab whilst trying to build, and this seemed to be the best for a building - it's not necessarily what I really want, but I don't have the money to go to Textures R Us or anywhere else to buy other textures!
Thanks again for your comments and please let me know when the school is up and running. I am always eager to learn and as I wend my way through the SL world over time, perhaps in a few months time I will be ready to use what I learn from this school instead of being such a newbie that I don 't know what's what! All the best, Winchendon |

I am a RL qualified architect and now working as one in SL as well. I find the whole subject of style in SL extremely fascinating and how people tend to ignore the environment and treat each plot as a discrete entity. One of the things I am doing with my work is to try to apply RL ideas of public/private space, organisation of spaces, genus loci and so on to SL builds. Also the whole subject of how in a physics neutral world people still want stairs, elevators and recognisable forms is very interesting.
Anyway. I would be very interested in discussing the idea for a school with you and potentially contributing. If that would be useful to you, please IM me ![]() |

YES! I'd definately be interested in attending, as I have extensive R/L building experience, and would love to be able to transfer it to SL.

This is a great idea, but given the current difficulty of building in SL, it might be best to use SL as a discussion forum with work done in blender or something.
Of course, blender has a much steeper learning curve, but you also don't have prims sliding around at whim. You'd also need a web place to host elevations or models, but given the current state of SL, you'd probably save much frustration. Finally, some concepts are very hard to execute in SL's rather limited building primitives which could unduly constrain concepts. For a real challenge, make all the building prims physical to grade them on structural cohesion. ![]() |

"For a real challenge, make all the building prims physical to grade them on structural cohesion. "
Hahahaha, why? RL Architects barely do this irl. I think the idea of an arch school could be really cool, but for those uninitiated into the rigors of design studios, it might seem a bit harsh if critiques/juries are given seriously (or at least as seriously as they are irl). |

Please add me to your list, I'm curious as to what you're actually proposing here.
You've mentioned that it's curious that in a physics-neutral environment, people still insist on using textures and virtual movement mechanisms which mimic the physical reality. Perhaps it's the frame of reference and what people are comfortable with. Certainly it's possible to build something which maximizes the efficiency possible in a physics-neutral environment, but would most people be comfortable with it? Another side to SL architecture which is sorely lacking is a quick-and-dirty general understanding of the principles behind a given architectural style. For instance, if someone is going to create an ancient Greek temple, beyond textures, how does that vary from a Roman temple? Proportions, architectural devices, and textures, are all very important to understand in order to recreate a specific style. Yes, Virginia, there's a huge difference between Art Deco and Art Nouveau . Armed with some basic guidelines, people could create a consistant architectural theme for a building, clothing, jewelry, or even an entire sim, rather than many of the well-intentioned but mis-matched hodgepodge designs that are commonplace in SL.I wish you well. -Aurelius Draken |

Would love to attend if I ever got the chance.
What fascinates me is purpose. I'm going to say something - and I suspect a few people will think it's a negative comment. It's anything but that. Second life architecture - isn't really architecture at all. Think about it. That's what makes it so wonderful. _____________________

I am a Thesis Student at Norwich University and I will be constructing a virtual architecture school teaching crash courses in design/build. Would anyone be interested in this as a potential student? Hi, I'm an architect too, using ACAD, 3D MAX, Sketchup, etc., - if I can help, I'm here! Best regards, Peter |

Add me and Aexis Sun to the list for attending classes... thanks!
![]() I know how to build a bit already in SL, but I don't ever LIKE what I build. I guess I lack a 3D design sense (since I only do 2D design out of SL!) _____________________
