I am a Thesis Student at Norwich University and I will be constructing a virtual architecture school teaching crash courses in design/build. Would anyone be interested in this as a potential student?

...please.

Also, there is a professor of Architecture at Virginia Tech who is active in SL (based on a rumor, don't know more). maybe he and others would be interested in your project.

Great thanks,

The project will begin shortly (from now until may 2007) and will be bringing ideas of virtual architecture creation into SecondLife. There will be everything from successful designing to programming your desired building. Also building effectiveness, materiality... there will be numerous classes.

The proposed building will also be a real-world thesis for my masters degree in architecture that furthers the exploration of digital architecture as exploration of digital self-representation...

Oh I would love to see something like that. As a Draftsman in my RL career I have tried to design within SL but had very little results that please me and actually look like a livable home/building. Please by all means keep the SL world notified about this project. I would love to be involved.

There is an architechture school in SL already. Not in world, so I can't give a name or landmark, but do a search, and it should appear.

I'm so happy to hear that someone is pursuing this idea further :D

The architecture school that has run a studio in SL is the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm's 'LOL Architects' based out of a sim called 'The Office'. Not sure if they've got plans to do it again this year.

BTW, if there are opportunities to help out let me know - I am a sessional instructor in the University of Calgary's M.Arch program, teaching 3D modeling, CAD, and the occasional design studio.

Might be an interesting toy... but...

I'm standing here in the prim college and it sucks for learning...
Building Tutorial Site Natoma (166, 137, 31)

* Lag is bad when the world if full of stuff and other people.
* Note cards don't load - most of the note cards gave me only loading... For freaking forever.
* For a multimedia world, why aren't the tutorials in audio so I can listen rather than read?
* Why don't the objects move??
* If the lag can be dealt with, and you can get ME out of the picture so I can see just the presentation, it might work. And TP between the stations so I don't waste time. Clicking on a link in the WWW is like TP in SL, but TP in SL doesn't work over small distances... So put your stations very far apart and TP between them?? Anyway... Don't waste time walking around...
* Gee Why can't we edit in mouse look mode so we don't have to look through our heads as we edit.. Pain in the butttt....

Better idea would be to WRITE A FREAKING BOOK ON THE SUBJECT!!!

I know, I know... there's one coming... Some day...
But the KB is disorganized... Search for building or linking or anything relevant and look at what you get... After 20 minutes of searching and waiting for the lagged down website I gave up and the prim college was all that they could offer - from Linden Help mind you...

If you can do better, that would be great. But fancy and InWorld is not necessarily better.
I want to learn on my property solving my problems with a web page or book open in one hand and my problem IN WORLD as I work.

Not what you have in mind, but it's the most efficient thing for me to use to get the job and the learning done??

More feedback than you wanted probably...
<flame status="off">

Best of luck.

Hi all,

The whole idea of this architecture school is to change the ideologies of architecture in Second Life. Has anyone ever wondered why some buildings has steep pitched roofs...? foundations? structure? even doors for that matter?

Architecture and building in Second Life has an opportunity to become something never seen before or realized by designers. The fact that most buildings in SecondLife look like real-world buildings (as modern as they may be) tells me that this school of design should be created.

The site is located in the grid Nitida (bottom left) and it is currently under development. It is also my thesis architecture project at Norwich University. Therefore the school wont be fully functional until May 2007 and subsequently when I present my thesis I will be presenting in Second Life... (and it will hopefully be something that has never been seen in SL) but I want those who are interested to be involved in the project.

I would love to hear some feedback on the idea in SL so feel free to IM me or post on here....

There is definitely the need for a quick way to learn to buiilding SL and also develop architectural concepts that are unique to SL.
I am very interested in developing this further.

Yes, I'm interested but .....

Hallo,

I've just discovered this thread, being a very new resident! I like the idea and so would be interested to join as I really don 't know anything about building and so on. But, I have noticed that some of those people answering this thread have been members for two or three years so far and if they need to attend this crash course when it is set up, does that mean that it takes two or three years or so without this course, before I will be able to make my home here?

Yesterday I rented a plot and tried to start building a small home and so far have two square brick boxes but have no idea how to add windows and doors (apart from making those objects in the first place).

That being said, that means that if the course does not start until May 2007 I am going to be left with my two brick boxes and little else, as I really don 't know what to do and need a course such as the intended one right now!

So, great idea and yes I am interested but what do I do in the meantime?

All the best,
Winchendon
