Amazingly, there is practically no lag - 84 people on the sim.

Too bad it's not mainland and AR'able...

Though, the police blotter does frequently have 'misuse of alts' as a reason. Is something like this AR'able?

~Down with Bots and Campers!!!~
12-29-2007 17:47
It's things like this...bots, campers, etc that are actually really sad to me. Not in a sense that I want to cry but more in a disheartening sighing way. It really devalues what SL was and should still be.

I have been in SL for 3 yrs this month and I can still remember when I found SL and signed up and the awe I felt in just making my av. I spent over an hour just on that. Made myself a rather decent slider based outfit, worked on my default face and hair for damn ever and off I went to land in an unknown place with unknown people who looked very different than what I expected. For the first few days I Just stood off to myself trying to figure things out. I'm rather shy so I am more of an observer than wanting to be the center of the party so to speak. I remember seeing humans, vampires, animals, etc. I saw alot of people with wings which were all the rage back in the day. Hell I still have a folder with over 1k of em lol. I loved my free wings. I felt like I stood out like a sore thumb in my newbie gear but at least I tried. Several people would hand me things, folders, items, all sorts of things and were pretty helpful. I remember someone gave me a car and I thought if I put it on I would be sitting in it, yeah, I had a car on my head for like 15 minutes before I figured out what was going on. I think several people were maimed in that incident.

I think back then it was easier. I remember only like 2000 on at a time on a good day and alot of people knew each other or knew of each other. The main thing that sucked for me was flying everywhere because I'm rather impatient and if I wanna go somewhere I wanna get there fast. But I would put on some wings and soar and lag and crash and rez inside someones house and think oh crap, I'm stuck in a wall in someones bedroom... I remember learning to build and how excited I was to just link something together. It was such a different place than anything I'd seen. Lotsa of friends to be made and fun to be had. We can be whatever we want, look however we want, live our fantasies whatever they may be. Have a bit of an escape from our first lives that may not be so great.

I used to help people as I had been helped when I first came to SL, over the yrs though my patience has grown thin. Mainly after free accts came out and alot of things went to hell, I got tired of helping people who really weren't serious about what SL was, tired of being asked for sex or equally ignorant things out of the blue. I'll help only if a real interest in SL is shown and sadly that's very rare. I've learned alot about different people and have seen and felt Heartache and Happiness. I have made friends with people who I would never have met if not for SL. I've seen more creativity than I could have imagined. I've seen goodwill and I've seen griefing. "I've seen fire and I've seen rain"

It's things like that, that do make me sad when I see bots and griefers and campers who waste resources for a couple dollars a day or some whooptyfriggindo traffic points. People who care more about $ or popularity on a damn list rather than the magic of creativity that is SL. I'm glad I got to experience SL as a newbie way back when, cuz I honestly don't think I could come here new and want to stay as it is now.

LL really needs to do something about it before that's all they are left with. Then they can rename SL "Camping Bot Land"...

I ahve only been on Sl a year, but I too feel your pain.

I spend 99% of my time "camping" because that is "safe" from the bullies and "haters" who will give me a hard time for not being who they think I should be. "to big", too small", "looks like a child", "looks too old" etc. etc.

Sadly I see that Sl has totally stopped growing since about March 2007 and given the prevalence of "bots" probably has actually lot most active users. I know my actual "on line" time has gone from 8-10 hours/day to maybe 1-2 hrs/day (I am retired in RL), but my AV is on 24/7!

I KNOW I am not the only one doing that. Sadly I think it is far past the "point of no return".

Individual real people campers are fine but trouble is 99% of campers now are just money farming bots. Welcome to Camping/Traffic Bot Life, the aim is to run as many bots as you can and only log in to check your balances, screw real residents. 30% of online are now just bots, great isn't it? Iwonder how much easier it wiould be to login and move if we could get rid of them hammering the grid resources 24/7
But if people are 99% camping many might as well be zombie bots too especially if they don't contribute creatively, financially or even socially............
People camping 99% miss the real SL, much like those who refuse to leave their own sims.

The lindens will not doing anything about bots, i not happy about it but I sick of bitc*ing about it. The old days are gone and they are not coing back.

This is eaxactly my point!

Just what makes a 'real person" camping?

AM I less of a "real person" because I go serve dinner to my kids and leave my Av on line as I do?

Second Life has become a vast fiefdom of petty land barons each with some sort of money making agenda. My time on SL has gone down because second life has become nothing but and endless parade of third rate shopping malls all selling the exact same things!

I suspect that if "camping bots" were ever successfully banned, then second life would simply collapse from lack of activity.

No one will pay "tier" for an empty sim that no one visits. If you truly want a "private" world then tools like Poser are much much better!

The second life catechism: "Where two or more are gathered together, there also will you find a camping site". There are very few exceptions.

Karen, have you seen the dancing geishas or the Promised Land Egyptian Museum or the International Space Flight Museum?

Or the Dragons on the Isle of Wyrms? Or the Basicilla? The Botantical Gardens? Greenies? Svarga? I just got up and I'm not inworld so I'm missing thousands of beautiful places.

If you are camping, you are only in malls run by people who hire campers and you are seeing exactly the low level SL people are complaining about.

People have build things in SL that continue to take my breath away and even if they are sometimes part of stores, the generosity and skill is overwhelming.

SL is like a huge evolving museum and art gallery to me.

Oh and then there all the classes and really interesting lectures. SLCN has a show on Authors and I recently heard a great reading from a book called "The Rescue of Socrates". Fun to have on while I'm trying to learn how to make a decent table.

A real person camping is where when you say hello you got a pretty good chance of getting an answer and a conversation, rather than blank silence that you get even when you offer $200L to the first person to jump off his camppad. I never had a taker yet. Tour the islands and you can see that 1/3 the population being bots isn't helping the economy, newbies shouting "Hello!" and think they are all NPC's, which in reality they are and less useful. No one will comeback to a sim full of deadwood AV's either. How is a bunch of people in asia running thousands of bots, sucking RL cash out of the game they will never even login to l(et alone buy a persons creations) helping the economy? Campbots are no good for legitimate campers, many seem to be run by the makers of the camppads, how else do you get campbots turn up within minutes of rezzing a camppad?
And where there are 2 or more avatars together, good chance there's really no person there.

Yes I have indeed seen most of those things.

Trouble is I have seen enough in RL that my reaction is "ho hum", it would seem that this is the reaction of 99% of SL players after a few weeks.

All of that is done and far better in many of the Poser and 3d websites.

www.renderosity.com is a pretty good place for a start. Last time I even tried to count there were several thousand 3D related artists sites around.

Second Life is essentially a glorified chat room, with a bunch of self righteous bullies trying to force everyone to go along with THEIR idea of what it should be!

No tool like Second Life will ever be able to compete in making 3d artwork with software that is specifically designed to do that!

Fussing baout "bots" and trying to bully people into sitting at a keyboard while their RL kids go to hell is simply stupid!

Well for me it is a way to "park" my avatar while I attend to things like my family.

Clearly many people find that idea offensive and are busy trying to bully everyone into conforming to their pattern.

I wonder why the really creative ones have gone elsewhere?

Karen does pick up chats from freinds, usually after a few hours. Then I typically go to IRC or email - they both do that communication job much more efficiently than buggy Second Life!

I only meet someone in SL if we want to compare some outfit or silly idea. We tend to do that about twice a week.

At one time there was an active exploration community in Sl, but this has died away. As near as I can tell because of all the arbitrary banning rules and forbidden areas.

The really interesting sims offended some pressure group and got taken down by LL.

Yeah - it looks very creepy - I think it's the way they are all facing the same direction.

@Karen, the way this sounds makes me wonder why you even stay in SL at all? Why not just use IRC? It seems like wasting a lot of energy on running the computer the whole day for nothing.

Ahh, thanks for that. That makes a bit more sense.
When I come into SL, it is usually at night, when my family are all doing other things. I can give it my full attention and have a good look about. There is some fantastic things to look at.
If something comes up, I just go somewhere quiet, quit and come back if I can.

I still think that picture is well creepy :D

Do the Lindens actually know about this stuff? I mean, has anyone ever forwarded a photo of it to any of them?
