Does anybody else think it's fascinating to see how people compare to their avs? Thanks for posting, guys, keep 'em coming!

@ Shakeno- I think you look a lot like your av. (or maybe it's the other way 'round) Very cool.

Of course, and it's interesting too these avatars from fantasy (like dragons, furries, nekos...).
With an avatar which looks like you, you can think these are real in some way and you are around them :P

Glad to read this aim was worth some effort.
But... it is me looking like my avatar or my avatar looking like me? Hahaha ;P

(Sorry about my bad English xD)

thank you all, interesting to see!
i look like an idealized me, but i act in sl like i am in rl. Like to be authentic and also love to meet such ppl in sl:))) for sure love to allow myself bit more than in rl, because that's fun:)))

This is the closest one I've seen, though it looks like he used that exact photograph as a texture. Very impressive, methinks.

From secondskinlabs:
That's my handiwork. The image is not me :). If people are interested in the process of photo projection I explain it briefly on my web site under the <services/avatar portraits> section.

He is me, and I am him... don't tell him this, but I am much cuter than he is.

Dearly Darlings,

Can someone explain to me how to add pictures here? We don't often do pictures but I can show you our 25th wedding picture...it's pretty old but we still look the same.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. showdog Tiger

I think that I got pretty close. And my hair is long in this photo...just pulled back. I don't care about anonimity because I am trying to sell my art using SL as part of my marketing tool...so I decided to just be myself on there rather than confuse people. i do use my chicken head lady as my mascot costume though.

Sonia, do you have any close ups? The hair on your avatar looks very realistic. It's hard to make out details at such a small size, but the similarity from a distance looks pretty good.

k, I'll be brave and jump in here... the av is a bit younger, but I think I got the facial shape about right. My av can have several looks because often I change my hair style/color and make up to compliment my outfits, but this is my most regular hairstyle. Generally, the av will have brown eyes like me. She's got nicer hair and a better body though and I've got no plans to change her. ;)

OK, I admit it. I sign in to this brave new world where I can be anything I imagine, and what do I do? Try to recreate myself in my own image ... albeit with improvements. (Last time I could actually SEE my abs, they were more of a 5-pack than a 6-pack!)

What was it, paucity of imagination? Egotism? Or maybe I'm just comfortable with who I am? -- well, all 3 I think, and probably some other baggage I'm unaware of.

Here's a bad pic of my av, with a flattering RL pic. Too bad you can't get a very good smile in SL. My thanks to Naughty Designs for Gabriel hair & skin.

I look like me...but I look like me if I was driving a mech suit or broadcasting remotely to a monitor on a robot that runs around with my name!

The only thing is I've grown my hair out a little but in SL you either have the choice of long ass fabio hair, scrappy "the Hives" pseudo-hipster hair or bald. Forget about the n00b hair!

Maybe I'll have to start making my own hair, too!

I've also noticed it's hard to find a full AO pack with anims that don't make you look fruity to some extent...it's like all the man AOs were made by chicks that like metrosexuals! Sorry but I don't pose like a freaking model when I stand or sit.

My AO is made from anims I've found and ones I've made. The guy at 5ifth makes some cool ones based on comicbook poses and "urban" mannerisms...much more masculine than a pouty man-boy with his belly button showing!

You don't want to see MY belly!!

Again, not me, just my artwork. The person modeling gave me permission to post this. The avatar was composited from seven source images and shape matched to the photographs. The full front shot is seen here.

Thanks Paulo :)

As I do more of these custom avatar portraits I'm finding that the tolerance (comfort level) with the "uncanny valley" varies greatly from person to person. Some heads are harder to approximate (be that with shape, hair, complexion, skin tone, lighting) and that determines the amount of retouching done after the skin is composited. Also, if a person is not fully comfortable with thier RL appearance, the job becomes more difficult because I'm then dealing with intangibles. I'll post more examples when I can.

Best part of second life is having a morphing avatar! Most of the time I don't even look human, much less like myself. However, when I do look human I look just a tiny bit like myself...
