I love windlight - everything except my skins looks great. LOL

One weird thing - and maybe it is a setting I never noticed before....but right clicking on my floaty av name no longer brings up options - (profile, groups etc) Instead it just selects whatever is behind me that I built. Anyone else notice this?

Well, I found the local lighting setting. You have to go into Edit > Preferences > Graphics > Custom (checkbox), and then you will have access to all of the detailed settings like Local Lighting and draw distance. Unfortunately, Local Lighting isn't the same as the regular viewer (for me anyways) If I go into World > Environment Settings > Environment Editor, I get a ton of options for editing how the Linden sky and water looks on my end. I can change the color and texture of the water...interesting...

Stephen - when i had it ticked.....it was a mass of bold colour blocks, no definition at all on any of the prims ....except for the grassy Terrain texture..........it was truely awful!

Ah, ok - doesn't sound like the same thing I was seeing then.

I do believe it to be a driver issue. All last night and most of this morning, I could either have pretty skies or pretty water. Not both. Having Atmospheric Shading on disabled the pretty water. Turning it off caused the water to spring to life. However, after I went and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my video card, both water and sky came together to create a landscape that I'd been dreaming of for months.

So yes....I think it's a driver issue. :D

Thanks for that tip. I'd been having the same problem - I could have the atmospheric effects OR the water effects, but not both. Since my computer is pretty new (A Dell XPS m1710 with an nVidia GeForceGo 7900GS video chip - I bought it a few months ago) it didn't occur to me to update the graphics drivers - but following your suggestion here, I did so and now I have both atmospherics AND water effects at the same time! Yay!

I'm *really* liking Windlight, glitches and hiccups notwithstanding.

Try making something, then set it 100% transparent (via script) with glow set to .05. It's really spooky.

So, what would cause much of my stuff just never to rezz? Everything I've built looks like a tornado hit it. Even the Linden Ocean doesn't show up. This is really upsetting. I couldn't give a rat's ass what the water looks like (if it's there at all) if nothing else works.

I dunno, but I've been having rezzing problems recently too. FWIW, I don't think it's necessarily Windlight doing it, since I get the same difficulties in the current Release Candidate viewer, but not in the regular basic viewer.

In my case, the rezzing problems manifest mostly in one particular fashion. I'm currently making a gadget that periodically rezzes a small critter that dashes about for a minute or so then vanishes in a poof of sparkles. It works *perfectly* in the standard viewer. But when using the RC or Windlight, what I get is the main body and tail prims appearing. If I'm lucky the head will show up a little later (it's a sculptie), and now and then I'll get a single limb prim show up (a forearm, say; or a fingertip). the limbs are animated via duplication of the prims and scripted switching between fully-tranparent and visible. I don't know if that's got anything to do with the issue. But it's pretty disconcerting having headless, legless critter torsos dashing about the room. Very wierd. I'm also getting other stuff rezzing more slowly (just the usual things, buildings, attachments etc) but they usually show up eventually. The critters die after 45secs, so that might be part of the problem...?

Has anyone else had problems like that, both in the RC and Windlight? Any idea how to fix it?

Why does the sailboat not reflect in the water? I thought 'reflect everything' meant everything.

BTW--that shot looks freakin beautiful.

Hey Michael --

It was just the shot angle and the amount of light from behind...there is an option to adjust levels of reflectivity. The boat definitely reflects in the water as does everything else if it's enabled.

The sky no longer ceases to exist at 700m, but now, above 1024m, you have sky but black ground below the horizon.

The sky isn't doing that for me...looks fine...even 1000's of meters up. No dark ground effect either.

Not sure why it looks that way for you.

When you enabled atmospheric shaders, did you see a crazy dark mess over the sky whenever you moved or turned?

partner had that, its your shadow. somethign to do with lowering your refract scale. drop that to about .15(under advanced water)

My post seems to have been lost somewhere in this, but does anyone know why windlight would crash every single time I try to start it up (crashes before I even get the log in screen, and I've downloaded and installed it four times just to be sure it wasn't a corrupted file)?

AV's are NOT appearing in crowded sims. Very few av's actually appear, and many of those that do, look like the "ghost" av's of 2 years ago, all you can see is attachments. I went back to the Nicholaz viewer immediately.

All from the same spot, just with the time of day/night changed.

Out door shadows--to be convincing in the least--have to follow a moving light source (the sun or moon). Real time light casting is a huge technology...and requires millions of lines of code, and some pretty heft hardware to pull of accurately.

With Windlight, the lighting changes by 10 minute settings. With shadow, hourly settings would probably be ample. The shapes of objects and how transparent they are is already known by the system. Shadows could be fairly vague, they wouldn't need to follow every detail of an object.

I've given it a very quick try - everything looked way too bright on my screen. I kept wanting to turn the contrast down, but there didn't seem an easy way to do it and everything I changed made things look worse than the default settings. My water didn't look anywhere near so good as the pictures here look. My set up is:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1829 MHz)
Memory: 2046 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce Go 7600/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.0.1
LLMozLib Version: 1.1.0 (Mozilla GRE:1.8.0.12_0000000000)
Packets Lost: 5/11626 (0.0%)

Can anyone advise how I should set the Environment parameters?

I'm getting about the same performance as pre-windlight, but with the new windlight skies and reflective water which is nice. I'm going to try tweaking it to look the same as pre-windlight to see what kind of performance I can get, as I can do without the eye-candy if I can run faster instead.

Default day-cycle in Windlight seems too bright at night, I really want one that goes to how the pre-windlight viewer looks with "Nighttime Brightness" set to 0.00, as local lights look so much better that way.

It is however a very nice graphical update, I'm hoping I can take more advantage when I get a new machine.

hmm See everything to me is too dark, all suns, I was resisting turning up! brightness,
trying to see through the settings in the windlight version itself, haven't hit on it yet,
but I've been busy, will have a better go at it this weekend, testing what's what and reading other ppls input.
And my avie still looks like hells! HELLS! All meh and washed out!
I'm going to go here,
I notice my skin and other fems skins all look like they need face lights, even when they might have one and oddly guys' skins look better? *grrr?*
Windlight is weird, sure is great as a view, a capture,
but overall it's like,
these strong defined contrasts coming at you & our avies don't mingle in it.

LOL! True! I thought about it, but I'm one of those "I hate scrolling all over the screen to see a pic" people :)
