I thought I would start a thread spacifically to discuss we are seeing, or not seeing in the release of WindLight. I'm uber excited about it, but there have been frustations so I want to know what kinds of glitches you guys are finding, just to get an idea if the bugs I'm seing are across the board.
Fisrtly...I'm not noticing any problem with the windlight feature itself.... I run on Windows xp...NVidia7600 with a Dell xps 410..... rockin cable internet. So....my system seems to handle it great on the 'high' setting.
But...problems I AM noticing are avitar textures not rezzing.....taking forever for clothing to appear.....or not at all. Rebake does nothing.....edit appearance doesn't prompt it.....Also attachments don't seem to want to show up. So while my skies are beautiful...I am unable to leave my SL house cause I can't get dressed. Incidentally...this isn't consistant...yesterday I wasn't seeing this. Today, just now....had to log off cause textures wont rez.
Also...odd little graphic UFO at the horizen line that moves in skips & jerks with my camera view. Looks for all the world like a boat skimming across the water in the distance... but it's a line of 'light'. It's not that big a deal....but I thought it note worthy since I think it's probably related to Windlight.

Noticed that about the textures too, it vaguely feels like things are being rendered in about the same time overall, just maybe in a different order so that some "less interesting" features pop in earlier than the things I really want to look at Not a bug at all, but particles seem to be a little brighter or more prominent (maybe they are one of the things that render faster now?), I'm noticing them in lots of places where they used to not get my attention.

Oh my bug gives me Xray vision! (where is that OMG smiley when I need it.) It's like my screen is one big invisibility prim, except I can see "in" instead of the other way around. I have my settings at Ultra btw. Lowering them to Mid, and some things go back to normal, but not all. Sheesh, this is a pretty revealing bug!! No need to worry about people camming in, they can just float from 128 meters away and get an eye full . If this is a feature, I know about 7 home builders that will be reworking their texture use pronto!

Things do seem to take longer to rez, even when I reduced my draw distance. For example, a banister on my land never popped up at all last night, and I sat there for about 45 minutes. Yet pretty much the rest of the sim rezzed, as did part of the sim next door. It's almost as if a few random prims won't rez unless I log off then on again (which I did, and the offending prims rezzed the next time) Now that I think about it, the banister, as well as a few wheels on carriages were all alpha textured. Not sure if that is significant (keep in mind the PRIM never appeared--it didn't appear with grey textures) As someone noted in another thread, the edges of things look a little "crinkly", particularly at noon. Overall, though, it marvelous. I find myself touring about places again, just like when I was new, entranced by the wonder of it all. Hmmm....must take a peek at Svarga in Windlight

I went to the Lost Garden of Apollo to take in the scenery. My hair would not appear and I couldn't detach or reattach it. Also some of the water was missing form around the dock which looked very odd indeed. I used to have a way to fix missing water by opening the Estate menu but either it doesn't work or I didn't remember it right. Had to relog to get the water back.
Oddly enough this viewer seems to have eased my 90% crash rate after tp which I have been living with for months (a Mac issue, I believe). I'm getting crashes which may be due to having all parameters cranked to the max. I am experiementing with settings to balance quality and stability.

Can't seem to right-click on peoples names to get profiles any more. Didn't they do that on the last WindLight too? Annoying..
Or is there a preferences setting for that?
edit: and if you right click on somebody's prim attachment, you get the Profile option but it pops up an empty profile for "??? ???". Right clicking on the person but not on an attachment works correctly.

I have one major bug; it crashes every time I try to open it (I don't even get to the log in screen).

I only played with it a few minutes, but the first thing I noticed that irritated me (and I'm sure I'll be told it's my hardware or something) is that turning on the sky effects and setting it to default gives me a bright yellow sky with light bluish-grey clouds. I even tinkered around with the advanced settings and the list of presets to no avail. Morning, noon, evening didn't make a difference either, other than to change the shade of yellow.
However, speaking of presets, there was one that was something like "Western Sunset", I believe, that looked totally awesome.

Particles seem to go crazy. A simple cigarette burning gives off a giant plume of smoke. Half my building never rezes and the video play back jerky. People walk and it looks like they are having a seizure.
Nice try LL go back to the drawing board

I find this very upsetting. 1/3 of my stuff doesn't rezz at all. If this became reality, I'd be ruined. I fly around my properties, and it just looks like a garbage dump because significant patches of it are just missing, including the Linden Ocean.

I discovered I cannot set the sun on Estate land using the windlight viewer. Had to log in using the old version to quickly set it for an event.

Big sections of my build just vanish... they are there, but at some point when I turn around they are gone. Also noticed the ocean in our sim was missing at one point also. Had to relog to get them to reappear, but it happens quite frequently.

I have culling issues. Objects are culled that are out of view, but many don't come back again. If I stay on long enough half the stuff around me is gone. Even teleporting from spot to spot in the area doesn't fix it. I have to relog. I've also noticed longer than normal texture load times. Other than that, it's working okay, but the missing objects thing is a deal breaker. Edit: Guess I'm not the only one with this problem

This is my bug...it's brutally annoying considering my system renders everything including ripple water beautifully in the main clients. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-925

But then, just as you say, Chip, after I was on for a while, nearly everything started to disappear.

I have not played around to discover any real bugs, but a couple of things I am perturbed by. The first is how everything beyond the draw distance is just water, as if you are suddenly on an island. In the regular viewer it just starts to blend into that dull blue color into a horizon of sorts.... The second is actually a feature, and quite nice for most applications, that being the shading. It works great for realism with the side of a building facing the sun is lit well, but the backside is dark as if in a shadow. What it does not work great for is on wall panels that simulate a different environment. The shading then becomes very unrealistic. The only option is to make them full bright, so then you loose the effect of the "scenery" becoming dark at night with the sky.

Culling (prims and especially the land mesh) seems to be far too agressive.
Staying in one place for a while with no camera movements also seems to make the viewer "forget" everything that's not actively being rendered, including whole parts of linksets.
I'm in a room with three exits right now. The back wall is entirely gone, and what's left of the hallways is what I could see from my original camera position (half of a wall), but nothing more than that.

Do remember to head on over to http://jira.secondlife.com and report these issues =) Log-in at the top right with your second-life account details (check the address in your address bar is secondlife.com!) and you can vote for existing issues or create your own. Remember to search first in case the problem you're having has already come up!

I posted this in feedback, but as the discussion appears to be more active here, I'll copy paste: Well I spent most of yesterday building with Windlight, and so thought I would share how I got on. I mentioned earlier in the thread that I crash in double figures using the regular viewer and suspect it's a Vista compatibility issue. Well using Windlight yesterday, I only crashed once! A vast improvement, and even that crash may not have been down to the viewer: I found that I was unable to modify my own prims, and upon checking the perms, they had changed to no modify. Relog fixed it. So either (a) I've been very unlucky with crashes on the regular viewer (b) I've been very luck with lack of crashes with Windlight (c) The Lab have fixed the problem for both viewers re:Vista compatibility (d) What ever is at the root of the vista compatibility issues in the regular viewer is not present in Windlight. Something else that escapes me. I'm going back to the regular viewer today, and then Windlight again tomorrow - and that may eliminate (a), (b) and (c), though I appreciate this is not an ideal statistical sample size lol. My general thoughts on Windlight: I do like the way light falls on the outside of the builds; the high contrast makes for a more realistic look. However, it's that high contrast that makes the inside of buildings look terrible, and I think that negative outweighs the more realistic 'outside' look quite substantially. Until we are able to set how specific prims render light, I think it is much better to turn the contrast way down - it is much easier to create high contrast effects outside with textures than it is to eliminate unwanted contrast inside. I also found that building with such high contrast started to get very heavy on the eyes after a while, and it isn't as easy to see fine details as it is with the regular viewer. As for the sky & water, well they speak for themselves, they're gorgeous. But for building, even with the crashes, I will probably use the regular viewer more than Windlight while the contrast is so high.
