I have freakin 19708 items in my inventory.

I probably only need like 3k of it.

Oops.

*boggles at that one*

I thought my 13,784 was a lot!

Ok so given the fact that some people fear there will be a total destruction of the universe by tidying up..... how bout we all just pull together and clean up inventories. Do it now, do it the 17th, do it a day after that. whatever...
Although I cannot understand any logic behind thinking that deleting junk can have an adverse affect.... but if that's your fear, do it another day.

It's fairly easy to see that this will help in one way or another. Deleting 40million + kibbles and bits from servers will definitely help our world out

People talk as if they are actually carrying all of those items around. Those things only reside on the asset server. Your inventory is nothing but a listing of those items. That is like comparing the card catalog to the actual rows of books in a library. While it may take your client less time to search through it (talking seconds here?), all those things you delete will still reside on the asset server even though you have removed the listing from your inventory. I fail to see how anyone's inventory size will impact my SL performance.

great idea, however, i have nothing in my inventory besides items intended for buisness, i have done the purging of the junk. and to say that ava inventory is one of the reasons sl is so laggy is well redundant.
heavily scripted items play a major role in lag (casinos clubs etc)as well as accounts not being logged into for over a year, lookyloo accounts and griefer accounts. maybe instead of askin one to limit inventory, lets limit the number of alts/accounts one can have.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Maggie and I think your Idea is a good one, but we don't think your manner of execution is. Deleting that many objects at once is, as was stated, liable to have an adverse effect on the assest servers as a whole, as that much data change all at once may in fact cause some sort of massive error to occur and screw us all over royally.

Actions taken needed to truely help the asset servers need to be taken by Linden Labs itself in the form of purging inactive accounts who's owners have no way, reason, or desire to ressurct them. Cleaning out our inventories could help, yes. But LL's removal of accounts and inventories that are no longer being accessed, and will not again be accessed would be a more prudent and effective way to help with asset stability.

The inventory list is dynamically updated, using SQL queries tossed up to the asset service.. One person opening their inventory folder, sure, a few seconds until it's populated. Problem is, it doesn't end there. It refreshes on a frequent, regular basis. 40,000 people online, 8,000 or more items of inventory each, and this can (and probably does) represent a pretty substantial query load. The goal of this exersize is to reduce that load.

*looks at everyone's numbers* Wow.. so low.. I keep my inventory rather clean, and box up any old un-used items, but I tend to keep a lot in active inventory just because trying to search for it after it's boxed up is near impossible.

I've clean up inventory about every other month, and currently at 26k items, with about 24k items in storage boxes.

if this is indeed as important as this, ll should make it easier to maintain the inventory.
perhaps a preview function for clothes (similair to the rendering in texure uploading.
maybe a dual paned inventory browser to ease drag and drop tedium.
or not rezzing copies of copiable items and instead rezzing the original.
or NOT saving a notecard unless i actually click on 'save', instead of saving every notecard i close.

You people make me feel so much better. I'm only about 1.5 months old and really thought I was a clutter bug because my inventory had gotten to about 2500 and I was having a hard time keeping it under 2000. I was spending at least 1 hour, every time I was online, doing some inventory cleanup.

Being a newbie, I don't really need the house/furniture/building freebies that I got, but don't really want to delete them because I probably will want them in the next few months when I start looking for a place to call Home. Instead of deleting them, I did box like items together, so that instead of having hundreds of furniture/house/building/texture type items, I now only have a few boxes.

But I've discovered that I love clothes (much more so in SL than in RL) and I just can't box all of those up cuz I want them available to change outfits many times a day -- and it is amazing how fast inventory goes up when you are buying/collecting outfits.

In any case, I definitely don't feel so horrid about my inventory anymore and won't waste so much time worrying about having a few thousand items. Now I can spend more time actually checking out and enjoying SL.

Nina, I may be misunderstanding ... but when you ask about dual-paned inventory to ease drag and drop: do you know that if you open your inventory and under "file" click "open new window," a second inventory list will appear on your screen?

Yay! I'm glad this is helpful. I'm sure I learned about it on Linden Lifestyles - before then I'd just given up on organizing my inventory because when I tried to move something it always ended dropping in the wrong place. Now I just open both windows, move to a folder (eg shoes) in one window then go down the list in the other window dragging and dropping all the shoes in the list into the folder in the other window. It is *so* much faster!

I have spent the last two days lying on an SL beach and creating new folders, moving stuff around, deleting and trashing. Still a way to go but have nothing like the number some of you guys have.

I've started building and am sick of all the 'objects' in the inventory. Most of them are rubbish and need to go.
