We all need to massively come together and delete the crap rotting away in our inventory. If we all pull together and do this, we could literally be getting rid of 20-30-40 MILLION things! Imagine how pleasant SL would be with 40 million lag causing objects out of the system.
Please come together and delete the stuff you don't want or need in your inventory by or on April 17. Please spread the word! Say to everyone you see "You know inventory cleanup day is on the 17th, have you deleted the junk you don't need yet?"
Thank you.
... to make this fit in the resident answers guidelines:
Who thinks this is a good idea? Who's with me?

I did this already about a month ago. I know where everything is and what everything is. It was at 14,000, then I reduced it to around 10,000. Now, it is down to 5,000 items. This is a good idea for everyone. The asset server is already held together with bandaids and duct tape as it is. LL should really limit the amount of items an avatar can have.

You know, I do think this is a good idea. Spring Cleaning for inventories!
Heck, I am certain I have thousands of things in my main account's inventory that I really will never, ever use.

I think instead of always blaming LL, we can help them help us.
To LL: Is there anything else we could do to leesen the load? LL, if you all call the days for us to collectively do something, we'll do it.

5000?
2000?
OK... Listening to some of these folks goals makes me feel like Imelda Marcos looking at her shoe collection, and wondering how any person can possibly live with fewer than 600 pairs of shoes... LoL
I think I have close to 13,000 things in my main account's inventory. And that doesn't count possibly thousands more that I packed into 1-prim 'storage boxes'... Mind you, a lot of that is things like copies of every texture that I have for sale at TRU, plus the vendor prims for each of those bundles. That's close to 1000 items right there... But still... I know I have a lot of duplicates and things that I will never again use.
I shall see if I can weed down to 8000 or 9000 items. Maybe I can get that small again...

Ok seriously does our inventory really drag down the servers that much?

From: Sexy Partridge Ok seriously does our inventory really drag down the servers that much? Yes, from what I understand. Especially on our side.

Most of the delay in terms of inventory is client side. But when you log on, the client hits the asset server for a full, up to date list of EVERY item in your inventory. Multiply that by all the accounts we have now, and it does add up.

I bet if people just emptied their trash it would help quite a bit.

OK I have already done my part and reduced my inventory from a high of 16k to under 6k.
As for it making things easier on my side, I always figured it did. But last night a search through inventory was taking FOREVER. Don't know why.

I've actually been working on my inventory off and on for the last week...deleting and boxing. I'm maybe halfway through and down to about 8,700 items from 10,500ish. I have made some purchases during that time as well (damn Hair Fair!), so I'd guess I've reduced it by at least 2,000 older items so far. I'd like to get it down to around 7,000-7,500, but we'll see.

It is going to take me forever to determine what is good and what is garbage among all the items named 'object' in my inventory. Should prob just delete them all in one fell swoop, and not look back. Is that like feng shui?

From: Dnate Mars I bet if people just emptied their trash it would help quite a bit. You're quite right - perhaps that'll be my first contribution, since I'm an utter wuss and haven't ever cleared it (I know, I know, shameful - but some of that might be important!). That'll probably be 50% of my inventory, right there. Another 20% for my lost and found

Ohh carefull doing that, you might create a times space vortex hole in the assett server sucking everyone elses inventories in too

I think we should be limited on our carry around clothing & rezzable stuff, have a reason to go home and change or pick up that starcruiser we carry around, when we actually need it.
I suspect having 10,000 items stationary at our home is better than moving them all with us from sim to sim? Or if not perhaps there could be home & carry asset servers
Non-transfer items are partially to blame for this, as people tend to keep them rather than giving them away or deleting them when no longer used. We also then buy another set again for our alts to use, rather than swapping them between chars. We also end up with a seet of shoes, gloves, ear rings, etc for every outfit. I prefer to just split everything in to folders called armor, pants, boots, gloves, etc with about 10 complete outfits, but no accessories stored in them.
Also vendors who include extra notes, landmarks etc in the boxes for items, us for keeping the empty boxes, and having 35 copies of the same note or landmark in each outfits folder.
Non modifyable clothing, got to buy 6 color accessories because we can't just buy one and change it's color. Or we buy the discounted 6 pack of colors although we only really wan or will use 3 of those colours and can't give the others away so keep them anyway.
Have those people with 20k of items noticed any problems prompting them to store stuff in prims?
