I haven't found information about this in any forum yet. It's increasingly difficult to find a private place where I can try on clothes, make little adjustments to my appearance, match accessories - you know, important stuff! I hit on the idea of going to a sandbox and rezzing a room around myself. It needs to be about 6 meters square to give enough room so the camera isn't embedded in a wall when I'm inspecting myself. I am not so worried about peeping toms -- we're all just cartoons after all. It is for the sake of propriety. Would this be considered rude for any reason? If I am unclothed inside a little room no one can see into (without a lot of effort) am I violating PG rules? I know the room is a little large, but I don't do this in a crowded sandbox, and will take the thing with me when I leave. Any advice? Thanks --KC This is even a problem for people who own land unless you put banlines up which i hate. What most do is use a skybox or something. Here is my skybox its a 10x10 cube with a lid. For you if you rez it and sit on top of it and then raise the Z coordinate manually to whatever you like (might want a jetpack on in case you mess up first few times getting into the box ) and then i just kinda plop myself into the box by making the lid phantom for a second. Sounds complicated but once you get it figured out it takes about 1 minute or less. Originally my box didn't have a lid but since I dont move my box as I have land one day I found I got this flood of visitors when I was standing nekid on my stand with a half drawn skin I had never banned so many people in such a short time frame and never figured out why. Obviously someone gave out the landmark but what thrill there was in seeing a guy on a pose stand in a skin that had only part detail cause I was making it was beyond me. It was annoying as I often leave myself up theer and tab out and work on the skin and I would tab in to find some guy standing on my head lol. So I put the lid on and that problem stopped they probably use the camera button to look in but that's not my concern my concern was they were standing on top of me and i couldnt see what I was doing.. Anyhow in SL there really is not much privacy if someone really wants to peak they will useing camera controls to swing way out and look beyond walls. |

When I was first getting started in SL, I found a small, virtually unused "public bathroom" in my home sim, and went there to change. It was part of a build that had a swimming pool and a snack bar, for use of the sim residents.
Then I made a small 'parasol tent' - it looked sort of like one of those beach umbrellas with cloth sides that folks use to change their swimsuit at the beach. It was just a cone for the roof, a 3/4 cut hollowed cylander for the walls, and a 1/4 cut phantom hollowed cylander for the door. The tent idea didn't work that well though, because it was too small for decent camera angles, and aiming a camera at the inside of a hollowed prim throws the camera outside of the prim. ![]() After that, I either rented an apartment, or shared a home with someone who already had one, or had my own home. I would tend to agree that using a flight assist or riding up on a prim platform to zip up to 700 M or so in an unoccupied sim is the best choice for a homless avatar that just wants to do a quick appearance change. Just remember not to leave the prims behind when you go. The idea of ducking under water has merits too, but makes it hard to see clothing colors. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I made myself a body barrel which I can wear as an attachment (on stomach, I think) As long as your costume folder doesn't include another attachment for the same point, making a wearable body barrel is a good idea, and quite comical to bystanders. However, I haven't used it recently and I tend to change at my home before going to places.

Homeless shelter?
06-22-2007 13:54
I've often wondered what to do with the ground level of the parcel I own. Right now I have a small "Buddhist" shrine with a very nature-loving theme on the ground and my skybox above, but I know nothing about real Buddhism so I've thought about changing the ground level so as not to offend true followers of that faith.
If I open a "homeless shelter" with changing rooms for non-property owners, a few learning resources for new players, a place to rez items temporarily, and a landmark-giver, would any of you be interested in it? I'm afraid I don't have the resources to put camping chairs or other money-making devices, but I can at least offer a nice place to change and play around. However there are many great suggestions already in this thread, and I don't want to make something would go unused. |

Wow - ask and ye shall receive. Thank you for all the great suggestions.
Again, I'm not so worried about privacy as in adhering to the rules and in being considerate of others while I'm tweaking my shape, etc. I have a couple of middle-of-the-ocean sims landmarked as suggested above - however these do not allow me to open a package -- only a minor problem. I could open the packages somewhere else. I have also used the NCI dressing rooms, but if I'm tweaking the shape I feel that I'm hogging the space. It does sound like rental is the ultimate way to go, though. I had no idea it was that inexpensive. I can afford a few hundred L$ a week, and as I am approaching 90 days old, it's time to grow up. Then I wouldn't be homeless! Problem solved. -- KC |

Use Search to find a club that advertises that it plays music that interests you. It will be deserted. Teleport there and enjoy the tunes while you change clothes.
If it looks like a cool place, landmark it and check back around 7pm SL time, when for whatever reason the clubs that ever have visitors, have visitors. But most of the time, even popular clubs are empty. |

Frankly, when you can enter any sandbox and find a 50 fool lemming with a proportionate set of privates staring you in the face, I'm not sure how anyone could object or care about any naked avatars....

Get a shelter braclet for L$100 from my shop, it rezzes a shelter sphere around you anyplace where scrips and building is allowed, check the land settings to see if it will allow you to rez objects and if the auto return is set to 0 (off) or a long enough time in minutes to meet your needs.
Wear the braclet, fly up high in the sky, type the chat command and rezz the sphere around you as a 10 meter diameter shelter that you can use as a small private skybox or dressing room. You can teleport a friend to you for company in the sphere, or fly up in the sky together, hoover close and rez the sphere around you both. _____________________

Find an open piece of shoreline and walk out from the beach under the sea - less chance of being seen there.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Hey KC, you summed it up in the above few words! I can't really see where 'propriety' comes into it in SL. Besides, even in RL the human body is - well, only a body - and last time I looked, we all had one. A vehicle of flesh and bone for conveying our fragile egos, nothing more, nothing less. Save your money and continue to experiment in the sandbox! Love and peace.
