What is the deal with the ad parcels?

Is nothing happening about the ad parcels? This, IMHO is the worst problem facing SL right now.
Any one who has tried to buy land recently must have reallized there are two types of mainland-land which has already been ruined and land which is going to be ruined. Seriously, did I miss something, what is the logic in allowing this? For the sake of an unworkable advertising model tens of thousands of land parcels are being ruined.

Where is this going to end. If I buy millions of 16sq m plots and stick huge images of dog turds on them, is any one actually going to stop me? I could make a lot of money with that type of extortion.

then do it as some some 1 else would do it if u aren`t

mainland is hell no matter how u twist it...
left 1.5month ago from drakulm had 1/4th region, friend had a 5000sqm, old neighbours had also 1/5th or so of the region, we all left and within days it was turned into a junkyard

stupidity can`t be helped, proven across the grid on each continent, u might build something nice but ur neighbour would prolly build a 100m high wall as a nice view is an eyesore and thinks his wall is soooo beautifull with double overlapping texture flicker u should stare at it all day long

had an add parcel there aswell, first thing i did befor breating with overhang it with a crapload of pines so it`s out of my view and place a 10x10x10 alpha box over the damn stargate and return the favor for every moron that came near 10 time fold, 40x40x40m cube in plain view got returned a 170m long wall across 2 borders and 85m high

thank god me and my friend escaped, move or buy an island if u don`t want that shit, unavoidable

There are far worse problems in SL than ad farms. People can build whatever they want on the land they own. Just because you don't like the ads that are built doesn't mean measures should be taken to remove them. Unless the ads are displaying adult content in PG areas or extreme adult content openly in mature area or violating the TOS in some other way then they have as much right to be there as all the other monsterous builds in SL.

They say the book 'snow crash' is what the idea of SL is based on, if that is true then ad farms are supposed to be here.....

its a good book, give it a read :)

I guess I am a lucky one, of the neighbors I see around my mainland plot, mine is great! She does wonderful public gardens, and often asks my oppinion on what she does on the land infront of mine. The area is a nice PG sim with few ad farms and a Mini-mall striken from my and her view by her gardens. :) The land was cheap to. :]

I buy up all the land round yours. I then fill it with crap. You are then forced to sell your land at a loss. I buy it up. You happy about that? I don't think you'd be going on about free speech then.

Ugly builds are rarely a result of malicous forethought, it is a random consequence of individual incompetence. It is a different issue.

By contrast, you have half a dozen guys behind the 16m ad strips. They can't possibly be so stupid that they cannot reallize the negative impact they are having on their surroundings.

On the plus side, ad farms give us a really easy way to collect names of businesses not to patronize, so you don't accidentally support them.

Someone must or there wouldn't be a market for them.

said the ad-plot cutter to the neighbour just after putting a bunch of 16m² up for sale at $5k each and dropping eyesores on it.

Actually, the sky has been falling on the mainland for a couple of years now. Funny how it keeps getting bigger, tho.

Ad Farms are the Viagra e-mails of SL, relying only on a very few 'clicks' to make them profitable enough to last and last and last and......

The ad-farmers play two markets: the first is selling ad space which is largely unauditable by the ad buyer, the second is selling the plots at extortionate rates to neighbors who want to de-crapify their surroundings. Heads the farmers win, tails they still win.

No one is forced to buy land from an ad farmer at extortion rates.

Yes, unregulated capitalism is the best system.

I still think not being allowed to sell land at such small sizes would solve the problem. Screw whatever script relays (irrelevant now) or whatever else people use them for. The cost outweighs the benefit.

You should be able to divide your land up as small as you want but not be able to sell it once it gets below a certain size. I think that would be reasonable.

If a system like that WAS to be put in place I'd love to be there to see the ad-tards scramble with this worthless land they can't get rid of!

It is the system that led someone to invent and release huge prims, which can be used to block off the ad farms and will take whatever pleasing (to you) texture you put on your side of it. And then you can let the ad farmer stew on his side.

There's land available in SL for people who insist on some controls on what people can do with their land--"islands."

Some people prefer unbridled freedom; for them, there's mainland. Other people want limitations on what landowners may do; for them, there are private sims. We should all be able to find what suits us without ruining it for someone else.

The personal responsibility is a given.

There is something you can do about ad farms....I recommend checking out the arbor project.

Their home location is Tipsico 194, 130, 159.

They have some items that may be of interest including a global add cutter ban orb, i use on all my properties.

Short of giving into extortion, I buy and rejoin ad plots whenever possible and place trees or do my best to block other ads.

As for those who say they replace ads and signs with OTHER ads and sign, I give you a hardy "PFFFFTTT!!!".

I suppose I would mind most ads less if they were not so darn In Your Face, spinning blinking monstrosities - if you must advertise do it with some common sense and courtesy for your neighbors.

Linden Labs don't give a fuck what we residents think about all the Mainland getting ruined by Ad Farmers and Land Cutters. They have made that perfectly clear with their silence! All you can do is Just get used to giving your money each month to a company that really just don't give a shit! Or just become a basic member and not own any land at all !!! Get used to it !!!!!!!!!

I thought they were really a form of extortion to get someone to buy the plot at an exorbitant price. It really never occurred to me they were for real ads.
