Will it ever happen? I don't think so.

If everybody says "good idea" but nobody votes for it, it certainly won't happen any time soon.

Gummi Richthofen: I love you, I hope you realise that. I don't want to quote your entire post, but I agree with every word of it.

And surely the bigger problem is the awful, awful (non-) functionality of the Search engine? Vive le Boolian searches; but don't hold your breath. I don't get offended when a keyword search (or an Events Search, for that matter) brings up a host of inappropriate listings, but I do get intensely annoyed. Does this keyword-jacking even work? If I search for 'tables', well, dammit that's what I'm looking for; not 'table dancing'. Hand on heart, I've never searched for (f'rinstance) koi ponds, found an entry for 'HAWWT SEXXAH ESCORTS', and thought "okay then, the heck with the fish, let's go parttay! with some bored Midwestern housewives". It just annoys real searchers, and drags an already-fairly-disreputable sector of the SL economy further into disrepute.

I'm not holding my breath. Many people will think "great idea but it will never happen" and not bother to take a minute to vote for it. They will, of course, then complain when it never gets implemented.

I appreciate your optimism, but I've been here about a year longer than you, and my cynicism is a bit overwhelming at times.

I will vote on your proposal, though.

Implementing boolean queries would fix a LOT of this.

Will it ever happen? I don't think so.

What is a booean queries?
Thanks

In simplistic terms, Boolean logic uses an algebraic approach to searching and other computing tasks using the parameters: And, Or and Not. To go any further into it would cause my head to explode

Not sure "boolean queries" is quite the right term but basically what I was suggesting is the ability to say "search for A, B and C but don't include results that have D or E".

Today, searching for just about anything will get you a list of casinos. If you were looking for, say, a fireplace but didn't want the list of casinos, you could search for "fireplace NOT casino" and just get search results that included the word "fireplace" but not the word casino.

Adding the ability to use AND, OR and NOT in searches would, I think, help some with the problems of sex & gambling turning up on every search. It would be cool if they could add a default filter to the preferences - I know I'd put "NOT camp NOT casino" as something I want applied to every single search I do..

Thanks for your support but I still only see two votes. :( One from Aislinn and one from a friend of mine. Torley responded (ty, Torley!) to my suggestion...

This relates to an internal, much bigger process to improve search -- SL-29268. Thanks for putting this here!

...so they do know that search needs work and are at least thinking about it already. Voting only takes a few seconds - let LL know what you're interested in. The link is conveniently in my sig.. :)

EDIT: Voted, seemed to be a Firefox issue. Had to lower myself to using IE :p

I was thinking about this today, the people that are in buisness in anything other than Casino/camping/nightclub are the ones really hurting here! I often get so fustrated and overwhelmed with the search having to wade through the endless 'misleading' adds, that I will just open up SL exchange! So If a business isn't in there.......they aren't getting my business. :(

Please VOTE!
