The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

from http://www.wtfsrsly.com/sl.php : "Two Belgian newspapers (De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws) reported today that the Brussels Court will work together with the Federal Computer Crime Unit to "patrol in Second Life" because of a virtual rape case with a Belgian Second Life user..." How is this even possible in SL and what do you guys think of this case? Lmao i had to check the date to make sure it wasnt April 1st again. What a total waste of police time imho ![]() _____________________

Never mind virtual crimes in SL, what about all the robberies and murders in San Andreas? And surely Counter Strike should be under investigation for possible war crimes. Not that my RL agency is involved in such games themselves, but they have seen them being played.
A word of warning to anyone who is thinking of using orbiting as a defence against attackers, especially if they are Belgian. Orbiting might be seen as a form of violent assault - beware! |

SL avatars are not people! Although I agree with you, Brenda, the problem is some people identify their av to themselves. Let me please report a short story. I was yesterday in Sandbox Weapons and touched an objet (Sea Life) wich changed my av into an monstrous shape. If I was indentifiying my av to myself, I could have called the police and complained for horrible mutilations with psychological sequels. Since it was just twisting pixels, I decided to IM the creator to congratulate her for clever scripting. |

Gotta love a country that has such a low crime rate that the police have time to expend on investigating virtual rape.

Crime in SL
04-22-2007 09:33
It is probably possible to commit various real life crimes in SL. Fraud, certainly. Various Public Nuisance misdemeanors.
We already know that Linden Lab invited the American FBI into SL to look around and see if they saw anything that is illegal. Suppose a non-MD was dispensing medical advice. Bzzt, against some local laws. So, if some locality has a law that prohibits unwanted sexual talk or propositions in a public place then, well, they have a law. And it is totally in their rights to investigate if that law was violated by someone using SL. That is, if it would be illegal to call someone on the telephone and talk dirty to them without their permission, it might also be illegal to use SL to send them the same kind of message. I know, if one of you were to repeatedly approach me for sex despite my telling you to go away an stop bothering me, I would abuse report you. If, after several such reports I could not get satisfaction, why shouldn't I go to the authorities. In short, your actions in SL are subject to the same laws that apply to you in RL. Simple as that. |

The Belgian police may have another motive for being so "zealous."
From a 2004 Christian Science Monitor article: PARIS – As the trial of alleged pedophile and murderer Marc Dutroux stretches into its second week, attention has focused on the Belgian's claim that he was merely one cog in a network of highly placed child molesters who have been protected by a police cover-up. and further down in the same article: The Dutroux case dragged on for eight years before coming to trial, and "the inefficiency of the police went beyond normal stupidity," says Anne-Marie Lizin, a Belgian senator. The investigators' blunders - including a search of the house where Dutroux had entombed two young girls in a cellar without finding them - have fed widespread suspicions in Belgium of a deliberate cover-up. Dutroux is charged with the abduction, rape, and murder of four girls and young women in the early 1990s, and with the abduction and rape of two others who were eventually found alive in the cell he had constructed in his basement. He has pleaded not guilty to murder, and claimed last week in court that he was part of "a big crime ring" which he supplied with girls. Widespread suspicions and persisting silence Forensic evidence pointing to the presence of people other than Dutroux and his wife in the dungeon was not investigated until two years ago, and will not be brought up at the current trial, the investigating judge has decided. "There are two hypotheses," says Marc Reisinger, president of For the Truth, a civic group that is angry at the way the Dutroux case has been handled. "Either Dutroux was an isolated criminal, or he was part of a more organized network. The investigation stopped at the doorstep to this question, and the case is based on the hypothesis that he acted on his own." It subsequently came out that there were murder contracts out on the judge. Seems like the Belgian police have a lot more to do than pursue virtual "rape" in SL. One wonders why they aren't doing it. Interested parties might look at: http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0309/p06s01-woeu.html and http://judicial-inc.biz/marc_dutroux_supplement.htm |

"Non Consensual" Nothing you do in Second life is non consensual. You choose to log on, you choose the area you go to, you choose to use a poseball or other scripted object to perform actions. If a situation goes beyond your comfort level You can choose to leave or log off. I don't have to log off because some jerk wants to try to terrorize me. I pay money to be on Second Life. That gives me a right to be there. If you want my consent to play out your rape fantasies, you must ask for it, and receive it. There is no "implied consent" that, just by my being there, someone else can have free access to my body, property, or personal space. If you want to play out your rape fantasy, go to one of the sims that is made just for that. There are plenty of them out there without having to bother me. |

So, if some locality has a law that prohibits unwanted sexual talk or propositions in a public place then, well, they have a law. And it is totally in their rights to investigate if that law was violated by someone using SL. There is a whole lot of internet harassment that the Virginia law against computer harassment does not cover. However, it would cover at least a lot of cases of virtual rape (it wouldn't cover a pretend rape where every computer user consents to acting out a rape scene- it could cover online sexual aggressiveness forced upon a non-consenting computer user). |
