Wow, they describe furries as "deviant personalities" and SL as a "very sexual culture". Hm, I wonder what SIM were they talking about? IMHO the person who felt victimized, didn't know the MUTE function. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I just can't see how anyone can get raped in SL. If I'm feeling uncomfortable with my surroundings, I just TP somewhere else. Now, if I was in need of attention, I'd probably scream rape. Jeez, it's a fantasy world!

I am aware of situations where an avatar has been pushed by one or a number of other avatars with the "intent" to "sexually assault". All such avatars subjected to the would be "rapists" TPd away. Sure, it's unsettling, I don't doubt that, and I've TPd out of areas I was uncomfortable before but...

I had a situation a short while ago where two blokes landed in my garden and kept asking for sex. After I said there are plenty of sex clubs if that is what they want, one of them did push against me into the wall of my house and trapped me there. I just opened the map and tp to a random spot, didn't cross my mind to go to the police!
It is unsettling, but unlike real life, you can escape and can't be forced into anything. A very big part of the Second Life community consists of deviant personalities who dress up as 'furries' (mostly human-like cats) and interact with each other through all sorts of bizarre virtual sex toys. The Brussels police will certainly have an interesting case there... Heck, am I a deviant as I wear cats ears and tail?? _____________________

First off: Is this story legitimate? Or is it another :"Onion" type parody.
2nd. Who made the accusation? The alleged victim? Some busy body? Some Orwellian Government Snoop in Belgium? 3rd. Who was raped. "Rape is a form of assault involving the non-consensual sexual violation of the sexual, anal, or oral organs of another person's body." 2 words come to my view. "Non Consensual" Nothing you do in Second life is non consensual. You choose to log on, you choose the area you go to, you choose to use a poseball or other scripted object to perform actions. If a situation goes beyond your comfort level You can choose to leave or log off. Secondly the word "Person". SL avatars are not people! I don't want to hear that crap about "Virtual " depictions of sex being illegal over there. The same people riding that horse are the same ones who get their panties in a bunch over virtual gambling being illegal here. You bristle at being bound by our laws, I bristle at being bound by yours. my solution: Go ahead and open up the servers. US based servers operate under US law, those that use them are bound by those laws. Servers based in Europe can host activity in line with their laws. This story is ridiculous. _____________________

Oh jeez, that "story" has got to be an attempt (albeit not a very funny one, IMO) at parody. I loved the paragraph describing us furs:

This is whacked. If whats being reported is factual data, then the Belgian police must be really friggin bored and have nothing better to do than patrol an internet game for signs of harassment. Thats what virtual rape would constitute, harassment. Foul language describing the activity while some griefer bounces up against you with his fake dick hanging out. Worthy of a complaint to LL, sure... but to send in the Belgian police???

I think this is a parody or a joke. When LL can't even track, & return a L$4000 vehicle that disappeared from your inventory due to a bug, then how could this "investigation" come to a real conclusion? If this "incident" (I just skimmed over the article, didn't pore over it...*pfft*) can be proven, then that Patriotic Nigras group couldnt even have a base in world without LL's permission (?) _____________________

I think that kind of behavior in SL is disgusting and makes us all look bad as a community. However, I think it is a waste of time/money for a police force to crack down on this activity in SL. How would they even enforce it? Are they going to demand that SL give up the verified information (if any) of the offenders? Is it in their jurisdiction to do so? Give me a break. Use the Federal Computer Crime Unit to catch online predators looking for children. |

And if theres a situation where ppl feel uncomfortable then they can tp away. I don`t want to click the site URL for several reasons, but I have a hard time believe this is true. No one would waste their time. You cant be raped online unless you want to be, and then, it isnt really rape. just role play. |

This is a hoax.....You can not get raped in SL. I've been in some very unpleasant situations where multiple ppl pushed and pinned me against a wall. I orbited them all....I also could've TP'd out...but imho ppl who perform these acts need to be kicked into outer space.

OK, as a Belgian I had to check it out. 'De Morgen' normally is a newspaper with quite a good rep. The article simply states that the police (computer crime unit) will investigate if any illegal activities have taken place. Further details are not given. This just sounds so unbelievable...
I have been in weird situations myself but you mute the person(s) and/or TP your way out. And that is usually the end of that. If it involves animations, you have to give your consent, but still then the above solutions will get you out of there if you feel uncomfortable. As a woman I can understand the feeling it leaves you with if someone is verbally 'abusing' you. It's not just some pixels talking to you, it's a real perv on the other end. And that just doesn't feel right... |
