I do know there are ways of unlocking your forum if you lock yourself out.

Yeah, if you know the database root password. Or have physical access to that database server.

oh rubbish. you can just use the "I forgot my password" button to get it fixed, and if that goes to an email address you can't get to then those that are not technically inept can edit the database and change the email address.

Corrected that for you :p

I keep an updated list of passwords, ip addresses, account info along with a copy of the server html & php codes in the company safe. Made it much easier for the others, who are definitely inept, a couple of times when I was off work extended times because of illness.

Are you suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure? maybe there is some truth in it, perhaps thats why they want to get rid of it.

It's kinda sad because it's so plausible.

Apparently, no one currently employed at LL knows the admin password for the forums.secondlife.com server, so they cannot disable logins or posts! The only person who knew the password had left employment over 2 years ago.

Pretty much what I figgured.

Wouldn't it be more then slightly cool if it were actually true thou and LL once again forgot about the forum as they have many times in the past.

You know, none of this would surprise me in the least if any of it turned out to be true. Communications within Linden Labs is clearly crippled if not non-existent.

I just spent the last half hour or so wading through the "new forums" (at least, I THINK that's what they were) only to find thread after thread after thread locked down by Lexxi Linden for "becoming a discussion", and instructing us to hold our discussions at http://forums.secondlife.com :confused:

There is not a facepalm nor headdesk animation in the WORLD that can adequately convey my feelings here!

Good G'al! If we're not careful we're going to wind up in some sort of Lost-esque Mobius Causality Loop!

Not needed. What they need is access to main server where VBull is hosted and they need to drop in a tools script. You can shut down the forums from the admin control panel. Access to the database won't shut the forum down (well, it would, but you'd never be able to get to the archives again.)

I have lost count how many times at different jobs I or a coworker tries to find where a server is physically at. Or who is responsible for a random undocumented server.

Really makes you appreciate the "Beacons" function, eh?

I'm sure never being able to get to the archives again would suit them just fine. Do you really think they want all the negative posts in these forums to get leaked to Google? At least when this was members-only they didn't have to worry about that bad press getting out in the wild where all these untold millions of customers who aren't here yet but want to be here, necessitating all those unwelcome changes, could not read anything negative and make decisions based on that. Now that they've stated their intent to have it all archived in a manner that Google can pick it all up, they're going to let the cat out of the bag? Sounds very much like something which is not part of the Linden Lab official roadmap. I'll believe it when I see it happen.

I wish I didn't agree with your reasoning on this one. :(

Well, that is the other problem - they're not sure where the server (PC) is located!

This happens all the time in RL IT...

I heard a bunch of Neko's have decared it a God and have it in a skybox temple above Jessie

I call shenanigans. Ha ha, very funny, but you can always go into the DB and recover or reset the password if you have physical access.

The REALLY fun one is when someone reads an old document that refers to a box that has not existed for years. :)

The new blog forums are not up yet so they are not leaving us in the lurch. I'm sure someone knows how to delete files at Linden Labs.

yea login as root.
type rm -rf / and press enter.
All done. Along with your job.

(Note: This is a joke.)

I hate having to ruin a good joke but gosh around SL these days it is necessary to stick a damn disclaimer and warning on every damned thing.

From: someone
Warning:
Never run rm -rf / as an administrator or normal UNIX / Linux user
[Warning examples may crash your computer]
WARNING! These examples will delete all files on your computer if executed.

$ rm -rf /
$ rm -rf *

rm -rf (variously, rm -rf /, rm -rf *, and others) is frequently used in jokes and anecdotes about Unix disasters. The rm -rf / variant of the command, if run by an administrator, would cause the contents of every writable mounted filesystem on the computer to be deleted. Do not try these commands.
