I keep it under 5000, but then I'm ruthless, except for all my hair... :p

Re: What impact does large inventory have? Every time you teleport or move to a different sim (which probably lives on a different server) you have to haul your inventory with you, which means that the new server has to download it. Ugh! Imagine forcing the server to access 20k items each time you switched sims! Some argue that it causes drain on server capabilities and therefore contributes to lag. Some have proposed that LL limit all unverified basic accounts to low inventory counts... I'm not a computer pro so I don't know the exact answers.

I have far better taste than Imelda.

I'm sure you do, but that isn't saying very much, you know. No offense. I will be willing to stipulate that you (probably) have the best taste in SL in shoes - provided you prove it by setting up the SL Shoe Museum.

Meanwhile:

Having better taste than Imelda Marcos - a no-brainer. "She Stoops To Conquer."

Museums are for relics. When my shoes have outlived their usefullness, I will put them on display. How's that.

I'm currently running at a bit over 28k, with about 30k in storage boxes. All my inventory is organized and sorted with multiple level folders.

Every couple of months I will take older stuff and put it into storage boxes and drop my count back down to around 19-21k.

*knock on wood* The only inventory loss I have had is when SL was losing items on purchase/log off - and they all showed up 2 weeks later after I had repurchased it all. :)

I have found that once I moved all textures/snapshots into Texture organizers, my inventory loads much faster, and sim crossings are fast again. When my snapshot folder starts to build up is when I have slowdown issues.

Landmarks is another slowing item, and I've put them into a landmark organizer that allows me to search in there as well.

I have a self-imposed rule, my inventory won't go above 2000. It's hovered around 1800 for a month or two, but lately it has started to creep up towards 1900, due to a number of unfinished projects and recent purchases.

Almost time for another purge.

I was wondering what the Average was for most people? What is the lowest, and the highest? Are there people out there with only 200-400 items in inventory?

At the current, mine is just a bit above 14000. I need to do some cleaning an prim stuffing, though.

OMG, is this true?!

If so, it seems like a massive design flaw. Why would a sim pull down the info on everything in your inventory instead of just pulling down individual items as you rez/wear them?

I'm at 31758 items, but keep in mind I've been here collecting stuff daily for 2 years. I've been putting items over the last few weeks into storage prims, but I hate not having everything I could possibly ever need at my fingertips the instant I want it. Is there a better solution I am unaware of?

no, thats not true at all LOL. The items are cached locally. once you download the list, only incremental changes are sent back and forth between the servers and the client. And teleporting has nothing to do with your inventory.

I don't think so. Most people just use their own folder naming systems.

I'll tell you what, though. Landmarks (included with most boxed items), Notecards, and Textures make up the majority of my inventory. If there was a way to batch-download notecards and textures to my hard drive, my inventory would easily be half what it is now. Open Source developers take note.

Haha, yeah. I was wishing this board supported different smilies for that one. Something along these lines:

The software for the board supports as many smilies as you can upload, it would seem that LL chooses to limit our ability express ourselves via emoticons - which is actually rather sad. A lot of forum angst could be avarted if more people would make it clear what the intent behind their post was and what sort of mood they were in when they wrote it.

Good to know. I thought it just had to be wrong, but then I thought "well, we are talking about the Lindens here!"

And Wildefire, I agree with you on the smilies. You know, the forums actually rejected one of my posts this morning because I used too many smilies -- and it was only seven!

Heh, I stand corrected. I was just parroting back something someone said a few months ago in Resident Answers. Like I said, I'm definitely not a computer person. Thanks for the correction!

Maximum i've ever had was 25K. That got a bit silly. Nowadays it's 6.5K and been like that for a year. 90% of that is textures. All copyable inventory items are backed up in boxes and stored on a variety of mainland locations. Never lost an item as far as i know.

I keep mine in the 12,000 to 14,000 range, mainly by routinely emptying both my L&F file, and my Trash Bin.

I've been around 5,500 for a while, which includes back-up duplicates for some things. SLExchange, a third-party product-selling service you should look into if you haven't already, had a thread like this about a month ago, and there were people who 'fessed up to having 30,000+ items! I don't think average is going to mean much in this case. Too much individual variation. I would suggest this: Give an amount of time each day you are comfortable with to just weeding stuff out of your inventory. That should keep it whittled down to whatever is right for you.

Also, follow the lead of the person above who got clever about organizing inventory into useful folders. Yes! I NEED TO DO THAT TOO!!!

[Wanders off looking for a wholesale source of folders.]

You know, that's a great idea. Your last sentence, I mean. LL should sell folders. L$10 per folder... that would force people to either keep their inventory lean, live with an unsorted chaos or pay for organized storage.

there are some items called store-its that has a backpack form you can put your items in it then when you need something wear the backpack and bring up the menu and get your item

i put each item into a box labled name and color then those go into folders matching the color

each project i work on goes into its own box

i keep the bare minimum on me and have no problem getting what i want quickly

Oh dear, I'm at 21000 and have tons of storage boxes..
Massive amount of textures, build tools and then there are the clothes, shoes, hair and eyes...on and on.

Maybe its cause I've stopped buying much that the SL economy is slowing down..it does seem I went a little wild at first..

But I have a job now so I'm much more sensible.

Time to sort the inventory! Maybe a yard sale too.

I keep mine around 5000, I just start giving stuff away to get back down or deleting, I have an organised folders system empty trash daily, I like to think a smaller inventory means smaller target for bugs etc. And so far in near 9 months in SL I can't recall any item being lost, I've deleted some accidentally for sure and even found some the other day in an alts inventory I thought were gone. I also rare suffer teleporting problems etc.

Ummm.... lol.. at one time I had over 400,000 items in my inventory.. :( 3 years of hoarding can get you into deep trouble.

Then oneday out of sheer frustration I wiped whole folders. Spend a few days creating nested folders My Folder - Clothes - Shoes - Boots - / Hair - Flexi Hair - Long Flexi Hair - short flexi Hair / Accessories - Jewelery - Glasses / Belts......... etc etc.. and then had each set of clothing, hair, hats etc all in the makers named folders nesting inside those.

My biggest set of folders is Fancy Dress.. I used to do a lot of eventing.. so had outfits etc for virtually every event.

Now I have Group Folders for each company I have, each with admin, stock, textures, building parts, clients, office furniture, scripts, contractors etc etc folders in each.... last count, I am now down to 15,000 items.

My Alts have very little in their inventories, the effect of that is they TP and rez very quickly, when they log out no crash report window, everything about using SL is much sweeter and quicker... lessoned learnt.

Capella hovers around 4k, but I was very frugal with my freebies and stuck to the real deals that I knew I'd use daily + a couple of outfits. I only have 2 pairs of shoes! (Can't live without TaP Mary Janes and the cutest sculpted boots from pixeldolls) My alt/ex-main has closer to 8k after a year and a half.

I'm not a big spender though =)
