I'm new-ish and after having made the rounds of the freebie-loot-tour, am currently organizing my Inventory, cleaning out duplicates and things I will never use, have about 6000 items in inventory right now and a goal first to cut that down to 3000. Then I might aim lower, maybe 1000. I wasn't sure if even that was way too high.
I was wondering what the Average was for most people? What is the lowest, and the highest? Are there people out there with only 200-400 items in inventory?
What impact does a large inventory have (besides impossible to find things) -- does your avatar load anything slower when travelling around the world or the only delay is loading it the first time?
In most games I have played there is a concerted effort by devs to keep individual inventories down, not only to force the player into making choices but also because tracking so many items adds to server loads and hurts everyone. But is the way SL handles inventory different so that it does not impact servers if people have a gazillion things tucked away in inventory?

I'm around 17,000. I've got friends with significantly larger inventories... and yes it's virtually unmanageable, but I do some tricks with folder naming to easily find and organize things. Plus I would die without cut/paste and the ability to open multiple inventory windows.

approx 3500

Mine has been around 3500, give or take a couple of hundred, for months now. I suspect this is near the minimum for an "avatar who has everything." I own land but don't do much building or trading. Haven't added much new in a couple of months, because SL hasn't had much in the way of new products. When sculpty items become more common, i will probably replace some of my old buildings and furniture to take advantage of the lower prim count. But i don't expect to need more than around 4,000 items.

Wait around a few months and SL may help you out with reducing your inventory Currently my count is about 12,000 and I have folders that look like my home closets.

What Darien said. Just over 16k right now but I am about to go on a cleaning binge. Of course, 10k are textures =)
I'm also in the process of packing a lot up into storage boxes neatly stacked in piles in a skybox. All the animations and furniture and junk I really don't need to carry around. Since I change clothes there anyway it kinda makes sense to stash all the extras in boxes. Then Im gonna stick a copy of all the boxes into another box and stash it on a differant sim! lol. Back up my backup.

6000-8000
Many island items but mostly clothes. I do however keep it organized especially the clothes. I have about 6 folders marked "pants" with inside folders marked, "black pants, faded jeans, gray, blue and so on. I break them down to be able to find them quickly.
Same for the tops, folders for shirts, shoes, jewelry with additional folders inside the jewelry for watches, bracelets, necklaces, rings and so forth. Folders for jackets, formal clothes and I also break these down into pants, ties, vests.
It doesn't matter how much you have, the thing is to keep it organize and have a system that works for you. And after a while you know more or less where your items are for the most part.

I'm on the low end with only about 4,000. Even so, I get the "loading inventory" slowness now and then.
Even if there weren't the occasional inventory weirdness, I'd try to keep mine down for the sake of personal organization... I want to know what I have and how to find it.
I also keep copies of copy-able stuff for a backup, but I usually put multiple items in a box to keep the total inventory count down.

I've been around 5,500 for a while, which includes back-up duplicates for some things. SLExchange, a third-party product-selling service you should look into if you haven't already, had a thread like this about a month ago, and there were people who 'fessed up to having 30,000+ items! I don't think average is going to mean much in this case. Too much individual variation. I would suggest this: Give an amount of time each day you are comfortable with to just weeding stuff out of your inventory. That should keep it whittled down to whatever is right for you.
Also, follow the lead of the person above who got clever about organizing inventory into useful folders. Yes! I NEED TO DO THAT TOO!!!
[Wanders off looking for a wholesale source of folders.]

From: Brenda Connolly How many plain white shirts can one guy have? Heh, yeah, and I'm STILL running around 5,500 items. Go figure. (Plus the simple black jeans and the same pair of boots since the days of the Vikings; I really do try to keep it simple.) But Brenda. Shoes?! Are you Imelda Marcos in RL? Or are you maybe planning a shoe museum here in SL? I bet it would draw a lot of traffic if you are.

10k I fight daily to keep it at that. Ideally i'd like to have half that. But I've been around for 3 years now and you tend to accumulate stuff. I sort through my lost and found and throw out my "trash" often. Large inventories have been linked to inventory loss so I think it's a good idea to try to keep it under control. Knock on wood, I haven't lost anything ever. The more stuff you carry around with you, the more load on the database. I personally think we should have inventory limits for the sake of the grid which seems to be buckling under the load of all of us and our stuff.

Definitely over 17,000. I have stuff I had as a newbie. It's mostly organized.. I just have to get over the feeling that if I give up that collection of freebie plants I'll *never see it again* snif
I also have bizarre collections in Lost and Found and Objects I really ought to organize. And every invitation card everyone ever sent me, also all the notecards I've gotten from landing points on Gorean sims. In fact I think I have one from the original Port Kar.
This inventory disaster is in total contrast to the skybox I do most of my thinking in, which is all stark and white and modern and empty. LOL.

I'm at close to 8000, at least half of which are textures, the rest is trees/plants and stuff that I've built. I deleted the one pair of shoes I owned a year ago.
Shoeless FTW!
