I've been wondering about this for a while. I sorted my inventory very early on in world so that my jeans are in one folder, dresses in another and so on. But some of my friends prefer to make up folders for whole outfits so that they can get dressed/changed quicker, by dragging the whole folder on. It's only a problem for them when a favourite item (hair style, pair of shoes etc ) is no copy. I think I'll stick with my method, because I like to change outfits around a lot, but I was interested to hear how other people do it.

I do it both ways. Items that clearly belong together I put in subfolders under a folder called Complete Outfits. Then I have folders for jeans, tops, accessories, etc that can be mixed and matched. Mostly I use the complete outfits though - the mix and match tend to be frumpier for some reason. -- KC

I keep everything organized by categories: Skirts,Tops, Shoes, (that's a huge folder), Pants, etc. I don't use the Make Outfit feature myself.

I have separate folders under clothing for lingerie, shirts, pants, shoes and outfits etc. That means I can pick and choose what goes with what.

Like yourself Pixieplumb I sorted out my clothings folder early on and have sub folders for jeans, shirts, t-shirts, coats, jewellery, shoes etc and clothing that I buy goes into those folders. Unless there complete sets that I've bought from somewhere like Barerose or DE, those sets stay as they are.

Ladies
As this is so important to you about where you store, change and co-ordinate your inventory for your lingerie, jeans, dresses etc I have an idea and I am not sure if it has been done in SL as I don't venture out so much. Now Ladies I mean this in the nicest possible way, most SL females most probably have not in their RL ever modeled or been along a catwalk. You all probably spend a fair few lindens on accessories to make yourself look beautiful (and most of you do) and so to my point, why don't you model yourselves for an evening. If this is of interest to any of you perhaps this can be discussed in another thread rather than hijacking this one. a few yes's here and I'll start another thread to discuss this further.. |

I I own 2 pairs of jeans 2 pairs of boots and 2 t-shirts. Not changed my clothes in over 2 years apart from puting on an England shirt during the last world cup which came off pretty quick when we were eliminated. I find managing my clothing very easy.

I do have certain set outifts that I have set up so I can easily change into them: one street clothes, one more evening wear, one formal, one intimate, etc. Everything else more or less is organized by type. |

I mostly use the "sort into folders" method, but keep meaning to make more complete outfits. I keep those (skin, eyes, hair, clothes, shoes, jewelry) in a separate folder called "Ready to Wear".
The problem with Outfits, as one poster already said, is No Copy items. Include one in your Outfit by mistake, and it's a bOtch to find it again. ("Where did I put that smile attachment?" ![]() So making an Outfit involves some experimenting. You have to make sure that everything is in there that ought to be (so you don't, for example, put on your Outfit and become bald) and nothing that shouldn't be (so your Inventory stays organized). Someone made the very excellent Feature Suggestion that Outfits should work like Windows Playlists...not move the items, but simply create pointers to them. I also find myself fiddling. I can take an hour getting dressed, even in SL. Change the hair...then notice that the style doesn't quite go with my skin, and change that...then change the eyes...fiddle with the Shape to make the skirt fit a bit better....it's no wonder that the guys get impatient with us while we're primping. |

If it came as an outfit and I like all the pieces, I keep it that way in inventory...although I won't necessarily WEAR it that way. Otherwise, my clothes get sorted by type, subtype, and color. For example, Bottoms>Pants>Black or Underclothes>Socks>Blue. If I have quite a few items from one shop, I'll sort that way too...Outfits>Dresses>Teal>Last Call. Jewelry is similar (Jewelry>Necklaces>Pendants>Silver) and, since I almost always wear black hair, I just sort it by style and maker: Hair>Updos>ETD.
I can pretty much always find what I'm looking for. ![]() _____________________

I also have a complete outfits folder, which breaks down into types: business, casual, clubbing, gowns & dresses (which also breaks down again), lingerie, swimwear, etc. I also have a random pieces folder for tops, bottoms, skirts, etc. More often than not, I will wear a complete outfit. I do not include hair or jewelry in any outfit, or shoes as a general matter, so I have some choice to switch the style up - chances are, I'd wear something different anyway.

I keep my clothes organized by type and then by designer.
I just remember what stuff might go with what. I was never a really huge fashion plate - I love how stuff looks on other people but when I wear the same I dont think its "me" --- I never use the outfit feature I just "wear" individual items |

I like changing the entirety of my avatar semi-often, so my "outfits" folders have a tendency to include skin, hair, body part attachments (i.e. wings, neko parts, etc.), as well as clothing- all under a separate "AV's" folder in my main inventory window. The "loose" clothes I keep in my clothing folder. No real system of organization aside from separating freebies into a subfolder to keep the clutter down.

For my favorite outfits, I'll make a "complete look" folder, with the avatar and all clothes, hair and accessories all in one folder. That way I can do a "Replace Outfit" and completely change my look, no matter what avatar I was previously wearing. This is particularly handy when I want to change appearance radically, like going from a low-lag Human female, with non-prim hair and virtually no attachments, to a full Furry avatar with prim hair and a fancy outfit.
For no-copy outfits, where all the parts are intended to be used as a set, I keep those in individual outfit folders. If the outfit has optional parts that are not always used, like short-sleeved variations of a top, I keep those in a subfolder. These may also contain a subfolder of specialized avatar parts, for example a set of Furry tails that have had the attachment points modified to work with a prim skirt. For seperates like jeans and shoes, I have two "closets" - one for no-copy items and one for copyable items, each divided into clothes, shoes and hairstyles, and further subdivided by what works for Humans, for furries (with prims on the legs and/or arms), and for either gender. Then for Avatars I usually also have a "swimsuit" version of each, with the typical hair and skin pre-set, and wearing a swimsuit so they aren't naked if I have to change in public, ready to add a clothing outfit to the avatar. _____________________
