From: Nina Stepford luc do you have an update server? if you did it would really streamline this project and would keep it up to date as needed. no matter how thorough you are i have no doubt something will occur to you later. ....

From: Lindal Kidd Lucrezia,
Last night I boxed up your Kit, wrote a separate notecard on how to open it up, and TP'd over to the Public Orientation Island with my little titler set to "Ask Me For A Free Newbie Orientation Kit!"
First off, let me say what a wonderful, thankless job the volunteers there are doing. The place is a madhouse...people TP'ing in on top of other people, people running into other people (some deliberately, most not), naked people (most by accident), and all manner of craziness. All hail the Newbie Helpers!
Second... I managed to give away several of the Kits. A few people were brave enough to ask me directly, while I had to offer it to others.
Third...there's got to be a better way. Boxing up multiple items is the only way I know of to give somebody something...I haven't managed to figure out how to transfer an unboxed Inventory folder. But, Orientation Island is a "No Build" area, so the newbies can't open their present! And most of them don't know of a place to go where they CAN open it.
Do you think maybe I should include a LM to a sandbox or other Buildable area in the cover note? *nods vigorously to all of that* That's great, thank you. I'm going to create two versions of the new resident kit: 1. a Folder version that can be dragged onto a person's profile, avatar etc., so that it appears directly in their inventory, unboxed and ready to use. and 2. a Boxed version that when left clicked on, will be copied into their inventory under a folder (although the hair vouchers etc. from Diversity and Gurl6 are boxed within that). Each item (not notecard) in the kit has its regular name with a brief description of what to do (wear or drag etc.). I'm trying to make it as easy as possible to use the items in the kit. I do mention in the readme (I think) to TP to a nice location (I list a few) to relax and read. I think I'll include a couple raw LMs that they can use to TP to. My tea house land is good because the tea house provides a private place to change and the surrounding garden has a meditation chair and other benches for sitting and relaxing. *ponders some more*

From: 3Ring Binder i think i read thru every card, some more indepth than others, but i don't remember seeing where it tells newbies how they can make money. did i miss that?
i hate to bring up the "c" word, but the reality is that if you have no skills, it's one of the only options, outside of working for someone else, and those jobs (quite frankly) are hard to find. especially for a newbie who wants to shop at enkythings. each item is only L$1, but you have to get that L$1 from somewhere, and the fact of the matter is there are people who intend to not invest RL$ but only reinvest L$. I have two notecards, one entitled "Making Money in SL" and the other "Starting a business in SL". Both are directly copied from the main tip thread here in the forums. I have one section of notecard tips written by myself and another section of guides directly from the forums here (with links back here). I have a little blurb on "c" in one notecard, but I've copied it into the section on Freebies as well. That should help people out too! Thanks.

From: 3Ring Binder OH! and i forgot. i also didn't see a notecard exlpaining how to rez an object after purchase.
these items might have been in there, i just missed them.
Great job Luc! it's a really worthy set of information that will be very handy to newbies. thanks for taking the time to put it together. Got it, thanks! Added that to the section on buying things.

I don't but I have a number of Hippotech items and they have an update server I think. Is that what you mean? And yes, I intend on constantly updating it. Really hoping it will be truly good to go this weekend some time.

yes, a hippotech update server. if the newbie kits were outfited with the update script this kit would rule supreme. in fact, i think an update script is a _must_. if you do not have an update server i will give you a hippo update server as my contribution to the cause. If you still need people to pass out the kits

I'd be willing to help. I could probably use the kit myself also as I am new to SL too. It really is hard to start out, especially since "first land" is no longer available. The collection of newbie "gear" I have accumulated is difficult to hand out separately. It is really nice that someone is putting together an "all-in-one" packaged kit. Thank you for your time on this!

I spend a lot of time at Orientation Island helping newbies. All i have at the moment is a folder of useful landmarks. This pack sounds the ideal thing for me to hand out.
Btw, if it doesn't include ideas on how to get money in SL, it needs to, as that is the second most asked question.
Put me on your list of people to keep updated about the folder? Thanks

Dearly Darling,
If and when I can ever get on I'd like a look at your kit.
Ever Yours,
Mrs. Showdog Tiger

Great, just wanted to make sure. Oh, thank you very much for the offer but I've got it covered. That's so sweet of you, really. Although, if my fluffy brain can't suss it out, may I call upon you for an explanation? I think I should be fine with it, but I can miss the obvious.

I took Lexxi's suggestion and did a Folder version. Sure enough, you CAN drop it on an avatar that way (that's what I get for being little more than a newb myself. Still learning here!)
A few more thoughts after another night of field testing... 1. Eliminate the nested notecards. The SL bug that prevents you from opening embedded notes directly is proving confusing to newbies (despite your clear explanation in the top level card, Lucrezia). Maybe the Kit could be organized into folders and subfolders instead? With references to cards lower in the hierarchy in the places where the embedded cards are now? 2. Put the How to Open A Box instructions higher up the list. One of the newbs I gave a Kit to immediately developed a case of Boxhead. 3. A notecard about...shudder...Voice? 4. You're not going to like this one...versions of the Kit in other languages. We get a lot of non-English speakers...

You're not going to like this one...versions of the Kit in other languages. We get a lot of non-English speakers... Thanks for the ongoing feedback. I tried eliminating the nested notecards but there is a maximum number of items that can be dragged onto a person (if using the folder method) at one time. Although I could create several folders instead (and see that as the best option). A box version would require either: (a) boxes within boxes to keep things organized (but ugly when unpacked if too many) or (b) all the notecards in the main folder plus a few boxes within boxes -- likely the best way to handle the box version. I could put the notecard about avoiding boxhead higher up in the list but it's a moot point if someone gives a newbie a kit in a box (instead of a folder). Although I can put it up higher in the list for the benefit of those handing out a folder. My folder version will not contain any boxes that require unpacking so hopefully they'll read how to de-box themselves BEFORE they run off to freebie stores A notecard about voice would make sense but at this point, I'm not sure what to say about it and how pertinent it would be. If anyone has any salient points they'd like to drop to me, let me know. LOL... no no, I love your idea of multiple languages. This is something I've already contemplated. Once the kit's been out there and more or less finalized, I'm going to try hitting up some volunteer translators to the cause, but other language kits will be dependent on the generosity and time of willing translators. So this could go nowhere fast, but on the other hand, I certainly wish to try! Thanks again! As always, great ideas and points.
